Hey all. Restoring a plastic Altia body kit ive got and spraying it white to match my car, and had a few questions

So I have been pulling the mesh grills off, ready for spray painting, and was going to re-coat the grills in Black. The grills are metal, not plastic, as some spots the coating has lifted and i can see theyre metal. It seems the coating on them is some sort of thick rubberised coating with a smooth finish. It’s definitely much thicker than powder coat and has a different texture. Has anyone stripped this sort of part back and re-coated it? What did you use to strip it back and what coating did you go with afterwards? I was going to try and blast it, but not sure if that’s the best option for this kind of coatingIMG_2521.thumb.jpeg.e4646e33be3b04b74c9b31d52119dfc7.jpeg

Also on the black plastic “SKYLINE” section at the bottom, it’s obviously just raw black plastic, unpainted. Unfortunately there is a small scuff on it, what can i do to get that looking nice and remove the scuff?

I also have a dent in the rear bar, seems heat has deformed it, i didnt want to just sand it back as the dent may be too deep and cause the plastic to be too thin in that area, how can I shape it back ready to light sand and maybe a little high fill?

Lastly, on the rear bar are some “grill” checkered plastic feature bits that are unpainted, and have faded to grey. Whats the best way to restore them to a nice black?

Try paint stripper.

Body filler - assuming you're going to paint that part. If not....then I don;t know what to tell you.

Try heating it with a hot air gun (gently) and pushing it back from the inside. You may be able to massage it until it is really good, or you may have to stop and then add some filler.

Satin black spray paint. Even just the fiddly bits stuff is pretty good, but google around for people's reccos on what spray paint they swear by.

Any idea what coating would be best to use to paint them again?

unfortunately didnt want to paint it, as it is left raw from factory. Might have to just have it masked and sprayed matt black separate to the rest. Might get the whole bit sprayed white, sand back the flat faces and mask up the letters, and paint that bit black to have white "SKYLINE" writing

Thanks for your help man

Just satin black (or gloss if you prefer) spray paint. Rustoleum, or the other self-priming paints are pretty good for this sort of thing. Just light coats until you're happy.

That will probably look like arse. Less is more. Think about matte and satin black combo (your choice of letters or background being one or the other).

Or i just thought i might be able to just have that masked when they respray the bumper, leave it black plastic, sand and fill the indent with plastic filler, then raptor coat that little bit with the letters masked, then it will keep the rough lip with smooth letters that it has going on now and all the dents and deep scratches will be gone, and wont look bad im sure

This. Heat and push. Use something blunt and wrap the end in a towel so you don't get any sharp high spots. Its pretty easy to get them back to a relatively good looking bar using heat. Just don't melt it.

    • yeah i agree paint match stops it from standing out so much, oh that's actually really good to know i was wondering if it would help with air flow now actually having an outlet in the bonnet. Will have to focus on ducting into and out of the radiator now to make the most of it.
    • I would paint match the whole thing to avoid unwanted attention  I had a similar bonnet, paint matched, on my old R33 GTST, but mine was a fibreglass jobbie made by Blitz in QLD, they work extremely well for radiator efficiency and under bonnet temps
    • Does anyone run this kit with factory plenum? Does the adapter and bosch tb fit under factory strut brace? I wanted to get this setup before going forward facing manifold. Thanks
    • small update time, after always wanting a "cool" looking bonnet for my car and always struggling to find one for the series 2 that i liked and wasn't an insane amount of money. Saw one i liked on RHDjapan from D-speed in Japan the price was very good for a carbon bonnet so good infact i was a little unsure how much i trusted it, decided to bite the bullet and with the help of jesse streeter in not long at all it was at my door. Once it was delivered i ran in from work and quickly unboxed it and to my surprise the quality was actually pretty good i quickly removed the old bonnet and placed on the new one to test it out and even the fitment wasnt too bad at all. Then decided to paint the little grille in the bonnet black to stop it sticking out so much.   I decided to not mess around with the hood latch and just install some aero catch hood pins, having never installed them before did some YouTube university classes and i was good to go. fair to say it is not a fun job at all from making brackets so the pins sit nicely and actually cutting through the bonnet but also being very scared of cutting the holes too big it took wayyyy longer than i would like to admit but finally got it there. Then it was time for a quick test drive to ensure the latches actually worked and thankfully the bonnet looked very stable. I still think paint matching the bonnet and leaving just the part that sticks up as carbon would help make it all look alot neater as im not sure how i feel about all that carbon on a very fridge white car but will leave it as is and see how i feel with time.
    • I think it's bound to happen, you finally get it all perfect, and bam, something will happen. I took a while to get a Commodore rear quarter repaired where a P Plater clipped it. Two days after getting it back, Sarah wiped it out on a concrete pillar in an underground car park... This is why I take forever to repair them, it stretches how long until it gets bent again... 😛
