How to Overhaul R33 GTR Propshaft

Overhaul of the Propellershaft on the R33GTR

As the Propellershaft  on the R32 / R34 are similar, it should be the same there.

On mine, the rubber in the center bearing was completely defective and the constant velocity joint on the differential was jamming and was difficult to move, although there was hardly any wear visible.

On the joint in the middle, only minimal wear on the surface was visible and it was easy to move evenly, so I didn't replace it.

The universal joint was still very good and hardly worn in.

Here is the matching replacement joint

Bore circle diameter [mm]: 94 mm

Internal toothing diff. side connecting shaft: 28

Outer diameter [mm]: 108 mm

Bore diameter [mm]: 10.9 mm

The joint is a perfect replacement, the only difference is that the diameter of the cover is too large. If you cut off the edge, it fits very well. The only thing that is a little more difficult is the assembly. You can also just leave the cover off, it's actually just to prevent dirt from getting in during transport.

Here are some tips for assembly:

Mark each individual part how they originally fit together! It's best to take additional photos. If it can't be put back together the same way, it needs to be rebalanced. If you replace the middle joint, the toothing needs to be aligned so that it fits exactly with the original holes for the screws. It doesn't matter with the joint on the differential, as the shaft is not balanced with the differential.

In my case, the joint came off the gearing easily, but the new one was much harder to put back on. It's best to mark the joint, disassemble it and heat up the inner part. Then it's easier to assemble.

Important!!!!! The inner part and the outer part look like a star with large and small points. There is always a large and a small one facing each other. If you put them together incorrectly, the joint will block.

The screws on the differential and in the middle have different lengths.

If you replace the rubber center bearing, note that this is not symmetrical. Some have an arrow in the rubber that points backwards, just like the rubber dots on the edge. Take photos beforehand!

It's best to cut off the old rubber all around, clamp the bearing firmly in a vice and hit it firmly with a hammer. Put wood or copper underneath to protect the thread. The bearing is not very tight. You can't use a puller because there is a metal collar on the shaft behind the bearing.

Handle the universal joint on the gearbox with care, do not hit it. The needle bearing is sensitive.

If the joint cannot be detached from the differential, do not bend it and use force to remove it from the flange, as this could damage the joint.

It is best to build a puller and press against the joint from behind. The Thread is M10x1,25

If you have still any vibration you can choose another position of the Propshaft with the Gearbox and the differantial.

Great info.

Dead right about the centre bearing being backwards. I put mine on wrong thinking the F in the rubber molding meant 'front' but it actually means back...

You can also replace the boot. I bought a GKN high speed boot like this:

I found my cv's were in good condition and i just washed them out and re-greased them with new boots.

    • Awesome stuff. I should sell my R32 and get a V37 RedSport haha. Looking forward to this build.
    • So, first things first, it's had a service for all fluids (2x coolant as it has air/water heat exchangers instead of air/air), new air filters (they were terrible, and one was pinched when installed by NIssan's "technician"). Also, both the boot and bonnet gas struts were shot, so ebay sorted some new ones, the jack handle kept me alive for the first service It needs tyres (more to come on that...) and the brakes are horribly grabby, looks like they've been badly glazed sitting around in Sydney traffic. On the bright side there are no obvious leaks and it runs well. The car goes well with 300kw (stock, claimed, I'll put it on a dyno soon), does good skids and handles reasonably well eg in long medium g corners. It is no cruiser like the Fuga though and is noticeably jiggly on the average (poor) rural road and terrible on corrugated dirt.  I'll get some road/race shocks in it shortly which should help.
    • So, for those following along at home, I've had the R32 up on stands for a while since a minor incident in the last rally, which required a new rear quarter panel to be welded in after the car had been (pretty much) put back square again. The problem is of course, that some R32 GTR stuff is simply not available (eg front guards) and other things are either expensive (second hand) or very expensive (nismo heritage).   In the end I've decided to try out a v37 with some track days, hill climbs etc before going ahead with modifying it for race/rally like the old GTR. To do so I've picked up an ADM Infiniti Q50 Red Sport, rather than a JDM car which offers much better value but might lead to complexities when I discuss spec with the production racing guys. In the meantime it will be my daily (well, more like weekly) driver, mostly highway use to Canberra or Sydney. BTW yes, I did notice it is auto-only, and yes I did know the Z comes with the same motor in manual. Big issue with the Z for me is that it is unlikely I can meet the new rally cage clearance requirements in that chassis so I've gone the 4 door/auto route The colour isn't great for rural lyf, and neither is having a sunroof for racing, but the Q50 market is small and it is what it is. Also...can't say I really like the shape much either, the front is OK but from the rear it is a dead ringer for a mazda 6

Looks like it won’t happen this weekend regardless. But the coolant looks fine so far (no floaties of concern). And waiting another week will slow down my money hole 😂
    • I don't know whether that one should be reused or not. But here's one way to find the part. Go to https://nissan.epc-data.com and use frame number or the menus to drill down to the parts for your specific car. Looks like it is under 'Body parts -> 214 radiator'. See for example the respective part for my Stagea. Looks like it's called drain cock packing, and at least for mine it is part number 2148118000. Searching for that then gives you various places where you can buy it. Amayama can be a bit slow, so it's worth searching around. I'd make sure it's the correct one for yours. At least from amayama it looks pretty generic and fits a ton of cars. And if anyone asks what you did on the weekend, you can tell them that you put a new cock on the car
