1998 R34 head unit/infotainment

Recommended Posts

Hi. In these days i finally get to the interior. Bought some new parts to change and now iam at the radio unit.
It is some old carrozzeria unit.

Is there any unit to fit to the R34 which can show me some info about the car like oil/coolent temperature etc? I just want cuz of this. If it cant i try to find OEM cuz i dont even listen to music :-)

There's the Apexi DIN3 meter however it's long been discontinued:

https://www.apexi.co.jp/products/discontinued-products/din3-meter/

This guy installed one in a R34 Skyline 1DIN pocket using brackets which could go in the space for the radio? I don't own an R34 so can't confirm.

If you could find one for sale it might do the job?

I just ordered a double din android head unit that can display engine parameters with a obd2 scanner. I have a Haltech though, so I don't know if the stock ecu can do this?

I want to say that Haltech can be used with ODBII tools nowadays. Kinda useful if you want your head unit to do other things as well, like maps, music, phone calls.. *and* digital gauges.

Stock ECU does not use ODBII. I don't think a R34 is going to have any head unit that reads OEM ECU's to display.... the things the gauges already display. (boost, battery voltage, oil temperature, oil pressure)

Also keep in mind that oil temp, oil pressure are not in the ECU unless you add them.

Either way you should be able to get RealDash running on any unrestricted android head unit, I used an ATOTO S8. Mine is connected to a Link but I assume Haltech is the same basic approach, you just need to add a CAN to USB converter for the head unit.

More details of my setup in my stagea build thread (somewhere...) if that helps

So, what you're really saying is that you should have bought an IC7 to put there?

Yep, poor man’s IC7

Hi. Thanks for the info. I have stock ECU so no "easy" 2DIN radio?

@Rezz: tak Apexi DIN3 would work with stock ECU/car?
As i said i dont even listen to music in this car so this would be nice.

The Apexi DIN 3 is just 3x gauges. You can achieve the same goal via a number of different approaches. You can buy 3x 52mm stepper motor gauges and their accompanying sensors and fit that up with a 3x gauge mount. I have EGT, Boost and Oil Temp in mine.

If I were starting from scratch these days, I would buy an LCD or OLED screen, driver board and Arduino or similar and build from scratch.

Yes. It's not dependent on the ECU. It's connected to its own set of sensors and uses its own harnesses/sensor unit.

The sensible solution is probably to follow everyone else's advice and get something that just reads from CAN and can show anything.

But, in similar style as Apexi there's also the Defi DIN gauge kit. They are still making them and releasing new colour schemes. Comes with its own sensors and runs independently from the ECU.

https://www.nengun.com/defi/din-gauge-rhd

I have those in my Stagea. Personally I like them because they are good quality clean looking analog gauges that look OEM at night. Reading coolant temp, oil temp + oil pressure. Shows at a glance whether the car is warm enough to boost it or getting too hot and need to let off a bit.

Lessons learned with this:
- The pressure sensor output can also be split off to an aftermarket ECU. Mine goes to both the gauges and the Haltech
- Apparently can't do that for temperature sensors. From what I understand they use specific resistances for the signal and splitting off from it might mess with the readings.

The thing about the above is that the R34 already has a triple gauge cluster for this. Though you could run 3 _more_ which is what I used to do back in the day. But you do start to run out of things to monitor.

Ultimately the stock ECU is kinda limited. You end up eventually replacing the stock ECU then start picking up gauges and displays that interface with the ECU you end up going with.

Haltech are releasing Haltech Connect.

Their Nexxus ECUs have WiFi, and the Headunit can connect over WiFi direct to the ECU.

Also allows full access to every parameter in the ECU, so you can tune from the Headunit. :P

Took those guys a very long time to catch up with PowerFC!

No no, PowerFC comes with its own HeadUnit! Haltech you need to use someone else's Headunit!

Plus, the PowerFC hand controller, you can play Tetris on it too!

    • My 6 Point FIA harness have arrived (kinda). There was a mix up from the supplier and I ended up with 3" set rather than the 2" set. I contacted them and their customer service was top notch. It is being resolved and 2" ones will be on their way to be soon but in the mean time I was able to at least mock them up in the car to see the vibes. Need to organise some fixed back seats so i can actually use them as a 6 point. I am leaning towards the Velo Podium II XLs as I like the look of the bolstering compared to the GP90 XL or GPT2. The side and thigh bolstering on the GP90/GPT feels less that my existing Bride Digo R recliner. Velo Podium II XL Velo GP90 XL Velo GPT2
    • Yea I know the wiring would be fine just want to use I got. This was my first built engine and it blowing got me beat down just want to have it running right again but hopefully I can find a non vct head so I don’t have to do any of this lol.
    • Recently did the Perth Festival of Speed - and basically what we thought might be an average event turned out to be absolutely awesome they bought Mad Mike and Xtreme over and was good to see Perth get, support and produce something so good - 24,000 people in two days      It was nice to have it close to home for once yet have my whole crew there to run the car properly     Xtreme got the tin top laps record with 51.57    I hadnt done a hot lap on the home track for 20 months and finally everything clicked and dropped 4 secs off PB and did a 53.29 which is 3rd fastest tin top ever around that track. only 1.3 tenths behind 2nd so should eat that up soon... can I get Xtremes time - its not out of the question   Alll the blaa blaa's in the world but if I can replicate even close to that situation on other tracks will be able to make an impact     We got asked to do the hill climb to put on a show which in reality is just using some chicanes and the short track at barbs but good fun... launch control was put in and won the Pro class in that also.     Car needs some attention after being on it around Australia for last few months moreso the carbon underbody work and just a run through and clean up everything else seems to have held up good enough. Would like ,to take some weight out but that requires alot of effort 😁   Also waiting on new rules for WTAC and have some decisions to be made there and prob some minor modifications to suit pending class changes. Will see...   Divided on whether to go hard for one more year or chill out re: events this coming year prob more on the go hard and see if I can get improvements in times. If I didnt have so travel so far it would be less of an issue but I do so hmmm...   Also because build thread - gone to flappy paddles and a gearing change with a drop gear. It was becoming apparent that there were situations where I really needed to be hanging onto the wheel with both hands yet had to change gears and was getting a little sketchy and / or I just didnt change gears and delt with it and also 5th gear at 10,000 rpm is 290 kmph so I havent been using 6th as did 282 at WTAC and 274 in Perth drop gear will change to 6th being 300 at 10,000 rpm should also get a touch more acceleration speed
    • No, not really. Except that there are newer, better cam options that don't date back to the 90s. I was under the impression that you couldn't use VCT with them, which is why I said to get rid of them. If you can't/won't use VCT because of what you listed above, that's another matter. Although I would have said the wiring aspect of it was something that you should just suck up and do, as it isn't hard. Getting an actuator for the cam gear will possibly be expensive. I still say VCT is for the win. There's a reason HKS makes money selling it for 26s.
    • Is there something wrong with using tomei?  I’ve heard the tomei usa are fake parts. Reason why I don’t want to make vct work is one gotta make a plug for the solenoid get the vct cam gear. I rather just use the stuff I already have. I made 450 on 17psi full boost at 4K. I’m satisfied with that it’s a street car and sometimes hit the track for drift. If I’m really wanting to decrease the lag I’ll go to a smaller rear housing as I have an extra or even cam gears.
