Hi All,

We're in dire need of a categories reshuffle so we can more easily find content and also make new content easier to find. The current structure is too busy and complex.

Note that all moved topics will be tagged with the original forum category they came from so we will retain that info.

Current Automotive structure

- Newbie Introductions
- General Automotive Discussion
 - - Other Nissan Imports
- - Evo discussion
- - Euro Discussion
- VR Series - R35 GTR, Juke-R

- - Cefiros Parts Classifieds
- Wagoneers
- - Stagea Parts Classifieds
- Classics (1953-1988)

- Importing Vehicles

My suggested Automotive structure

Automotive after restructure

This is obviously a significant change but I believe it is one that will foster more discussion.

Please leave your opinions. I'd like to make the changes this coming weekend.

Mmm. I'm perhaps more in favour of a top level forum category being "Technical" with all the technical things that you have proposed to put under "Performance" and "General" being under there. Suspension and Handling is just as much a part of "Performance" as adding boost or working an NA engine.

The main problem you have now is that other categories like "Suspension and Handling", and "Drivetrain" have a mixture of performance mods posts and maintenance posts. Ditto even the "Forced Induction Performance" forum. So unless you're proposing to tease out all those threads (and I can't imagine why you would volunteer or why any one of us would consider it to be a good idea either, perhaps just go with a structure that has "General Automotive Discussion" as a top level, under which you squeeze most things that are not technical, and a "Technical" top level under which you put everything that we already have, just with less of the hierarchical nesting.

To be frank, I seldom use any of the forums under General Automotive now. I only respond to new threads in there when they occasionally pop up. Actually, to be even more fair, I really don't browse any forums directly. I just look at the new posts indexes and my notifications to see if there's anything worth looking at.

So perhaps just flatten the whole structure down to only have "General" and "Technical" top levels and put everything in under those in as flat a structure as you can tolerate?

Yeah, I think we're on a similar page here.

This is precisely why we need the change. You'd have only a few areas with new posts in them so much easier to see activity and contribute. Not everybody uses the new content streams or even knows they exist.

I recall we had a healthy discussion about this half a decade ago and nothing happened lol.

Yep. Just a reminder that this is not my full time job. :)

would you believe the majority of that was ChatGPT generated? Just had to clean up a couple of repeats and obvious nonsense because it didn't have context

Funkys seems clean... but could also see how not inc every region could work too. Not sure there is enough traffic / posting to justify splitting it up. Could always just have regional sticky threads within each region.

So maybe just;

Regional

  • Australia
  • Japan
  • New Zealand
  • North America - (USA & Canada)

I'm not a fan of creating so many subsections, say if you lived in NSW and saw a great VIC discussion, maybe you would want to join it.

I like the prefix idea, e.g. OCAU

I foresee mods/admin renaming a whole bunch of threads

I like the prefixes idea over subforums too.

I'm trying to find out when the next version of Invision is due to drop because apparently they've done a lot of work to tags and prefixes.

I am going to vote, please keep the motorsport builds separate, from the general builds.

I look at each, at different times, for different wants. And it makes a lot of sense to keep it separate, and also helps you to understand who's building a wild street car, vs who's building a great race car, without needing to memorise every single persons build thread and objectives.

If we go with tags then maybe just tagging the objective of the build?

Then I can rock the “1999 nostalgic habib sex spec” tag.

I like this, but ..

I dont think 4 doors and wagoneers need their own section. I am going to be really increasing the amount of tags used in content and we can always add a 'wagon' or 'sedan' tag to existing content.

Given the clubs and their activity on the forums over the years I do think the Aussie states need subsections, but maybe we do some merging - ACT and NSW, VIC & TAS, QLD and NT ? or WA & NT?

I'm not sure it's intentional Shan, but are you suggesting off topic goes to the bottom?

    • He obviously had his reason for flipping you off. I wonder what it was...
    • Thats why I stay far, far away from Eastwood. only go there if I wanna eat Korean food
    • I have to agree like, yesterday, I was driving down the warringah freeway towards the bridge when this jackass driving a beaten up Honda civic cut me off so suddenly it made me almost yank the wheel to avoid him hitting my car. Honestly and he had the NERVE to flip me off (or some other gesture Idk). Im a calm guy, but really some people just dont deserve to have a license, let alone be allowed to drive on densely populated roads/highways. If youre gonna cut through lanes at least use the damn turn signal
    • HPA do an interesting video on tuning, and Adrian shows on the dyno, moving from 10:1 to 12:1 (And I think even 13:1) and the power moves SFA. However, a couple of degrees of timing has a HUGE impact. Exhaust side of things will more be the length of the exhaust and how many bends and turns you have. The straighter you can keep it, the better. By a lot. Oh, and getting the diameter right. Bigger isn't always better. Going to big can actually lose you power.
    • I have to say, most people I see on the road fit the bill of atrocious drivers. Whether they be cowboys in their dual cabs, bogans in the Commodores, or the soccer mums. Pretty much most people on the road put zero freaking thought into driving. Barely look further up the road then the end of their bonnet, and have never even thought about how catastrophically wrong shit can go, by doing what they all deem as normal driving. Especially their late braking, racing to stopped lights, and sitting half a foot off the bumper of the car in front at 110km/h. Wanna know what's even better? By the time their kids get to be old enough to learn to drive, they've already got in the back of their brain what is normal driving, how annoyed you're allowed to get at people etc, and then their parents who actually have zero freaking skill at driving (Even though they constantly say "I've been driving for 20 years and never had an accident!") teach the little twerps how to drive, or should I say, how to make a car move. Literally watched a parent teach their L Plater, on a 4 lane freeway, that you just slam the brakes on, and push your way over, even with a B Double bearing down on you, and that's how you should drive, rather then, just keep going to the next exit. Same shit happens all the time for side streets etc, watching numpties pull dumb shit turns pushing across 3 lanes of traffic, rather than just go up the road another 30 seconds, and take the next turn that'll get you to the same location... Oh, and the damn right lane bandits. Or the retards driving along with their headphones in, and can't hear the ambulance or fire truck right up their ass about to run them over...   Pretty much, people drive on the road, like ego centric f**ks, and don't actually think how dumb shit their driving is, how it could easily kill them or someone else in a split second, or at the very least, how they're driving is contributing to all the shit they're bitching about on the road, like shitty congestion!
