The reason I made this thread was to try to get some useful info as all of the older threads only have tidbits here and there, while I do appreciate banter and suggestions of shoe horning V8s into cars, for the sake of someone trying to make a decision on this topic - is the general consensus that you really don't need to convert to solid lifters unless you're chasing wild above average power and rpms?

options -

Stick with hydro lifters possibly make 450kw at 7500rpms assuming all the right supporting mods for that goal

Spend the $600-800 for the Solid lifters and find out how hard it is to set the clearances and what else needs replacing around them

Neo head - possibly will cost more depending on the head prices at the time

Throw away RB or buy a BMW 😆

There's a lot of the solid kits getting around from different manufacturers so someone must be doing the conversion

Haha that is a wild idea, how about a banged up R33 and a case of beer? Mates rates? 😁

No more 90s JDMs for me, just want 4 door cars that won't attract cops.

Wouldn't mind a Hako or a 240Z all motor but modernised (big comp, big cams, ABS, DBW, dis dat).

You can definitely do 450kW on the RB25 non-NEO head, plenty have.

The $600 to $800 conversion will end up costing you much more I suspect, I believe you will require machining.

NEO head has the lowest barrier to entry.

My 2c?  buy a BMW 😆

as hydro lifters/ head will do 450kw no probs - went through many race engines at that power and 7.5 - 8 K rpm and the head was never the problem  especially if a street car you not going to push it hard enough consistently enough either

solid lifter conversion is big $$ not $600 - $800, do this and that and put em in

I know someone doing nearly 800kw on poncams 😉  well a few tbh

The way I see it is if people are happy to spend 10's of thousands of dollars on a build, a couple of thousand to get it engineered is good insurance

The funny part is, an engineer's cert still doesn't actually make the car legal. Interesting part on that :/

IE, even some cars from the factory are defectable as they sit in the showroom. So even stock doesn't mean legal. :)

btw... here's a fun quote I got back in the day (using a NEO head and going shimless):

a bit different initial requirement

Just had a chance to have a read of this, exactly the type of info I was after thanks for that! Amazing that thread never showed up in search

Yeah I'm definitely getting swayed away from the solid conversion, plenty of people getting impressive results without it

And the rules change with time ...but speaking to the premise you raise here, some of us old farts will remember seeing every police motorbike with a rubber rear mudflap extension, fitted to the end of the rear mudguard. This was due to an ADR that required the rear mudguard to extend lower than the rear axle (iirc 15 degrees lower as measured at the axle center line)...it was changed in '89 updates, but basically before that date, any road going motorbike was technically 'illegal' (unroadworthy) ...the whole area is a real prickly pear... 😃

Things change over time but all that matters though is that the vehicle is compliant with the rules that were in place for the year when it was constructed.

Go back far enough, cars didn't have seatbelts or catalytic converters. You can still legally drive them without a seatbelt or cat fitted.

It's not like vehicles need to be updated every year to match the updated ADR's to stay road legal.

I'd say the most common scenario is the car's build has 2 stages, all work that can be engineered is done first. The car is passed then the second round of mods start, all the ones that can't be engineered lol.

It still doesn't matter to the eye of the law. It's all those annoying grey areas. Engineer the car under a specific area, but that same thing is still illegal elsewhere. Hence, still not legal.

We are talking about different things, all I'm saying is there are plenty of people out there that don't stop modifying their car after it has been engineered.

Poncam the world

If it's for a SR20, make sure it's not the American Poncams, might as well call them Poocams. Had a set in a friend's car, all scuffed up after a few track days. Like the metallurgy Tomei USA used is junk. Went back to JDM OG Tomei Poncams, no issues till now.

Tomei USA is not the real OG Tomei.

Random rant over, fk the US of A, bunch of c u n t s.

It's unfortunate what Tomei USA has done to Tomei's name in general. I'm very weary of ordering parts from them now. I only order direct from a Japanse source (e.g Nengun). At least their logos are different, so you end up knowing what you have.

Is the UP Garage in the US of Ayyeee even the real UP Garage?

I have personally seen a Tomei USA RB26 cam that didn't even fit the head. Kind of nuts to me that it was even possible for that to happen but such is life.

There's two UP Garages in the US. One is a US branch of the Japanese company which sells things they brought over at tremendous markup. The other is University Place Garage/Fairlady Motors which is a shop best known for putting VCAM in RBs and trying to convince people to stop putting in 800hp of turbo on a 2.5L motor.

I guess that's what happens when someone can't convert metric to freedom units to machine something. 😛

Remember when those donkeys kept using freedom units and smashed that satellite to bits on the moon?

NASA has their brain switched on and uses the metric system.
