At $80 a pop they seem very cheap, my questions are (as their website does not stipulate)

On these days is there timing equiptment or not?

Do any of you guys ever attend them?

What kind of track time do you get, etc?

Can you have passengers?

Could i run full slicks on my car?

Thanks

Evan

1) no timing equipment, got to do your own.

2) yes.

3) mm..can't remember..1"15'? maybe? (never clock myself..)

4) yes, but he also need to sign the paper, but no need the wakefield license.

5) yes..some people bring their slicks.

hope this help..

No, bring a stopwatch and a mate

Do any of you guys ever attend them?

As much as possible

What kind of track time do you get, etc?

Depends on numbers and types or cars.

The first open day I ever went to there were about 15 of us and all street cars so they left the track open all day to everyone and we just went out whenever we wanted and for as long as we wanted

The last one there were race cars there as well so they split the road cars from the race cars into 20 minute sessions each. The numbers then got so high they decided to split the road car car's into 2 20 minute sessions each.

but generally you'll get ALOT of track time

Can you have passengers?

Yes but they will need a helmet, they'll need to sign the form and they WILL need a Wakefield Lience

Could i run full slicks on my car?

Sure, just not on the drive to and from the track :(

Ive already got mine...

If you can go mid week, the place is a ghost town and you can often drive around until you think your cars had enough :(

Trackdays in general are fairly busy until about 1:30pm where cars start to retire (break down), people start watching instead of participating and others go home early (the same can be said with drag racing at WSID).

Wakefield is a fantastic track to learn on. My lap times went from 1:35sec -> 1:21sec on my first outing and I was barely pushing the car (more so pushing myself to trust the car). I think with some semis-slicks and another 50 laps of practice (my car did close to 90 laps on my first time at Wakefield) that I could be down into the 1:15's :(

You guys are awesome thanks for the replies.

I cant wait to get out there and have a go

If you are going to go down some time mid week in September then let me know, i have soem time owing and am driving back to Sydney, liek the idea of dropping in at Wakefield on the way back from Melb..im looking at Thursday 9th, then the UAS day at Oran Park on the 12th :(

Yeah Oran Park is probably the most challenging to come to grips with at first, the last 2 corners seem intimidating when you first try

The 2nd last corner is flat over a blind crest into the left hander....all you can see is paddock in fornt of you, its pretty frightening at first. But once you know where the track goes its easy to remember it always goes the same way :(

And the last turn looks intimidating at first with the wall so close, but unless you are *really* pushing you won't come anywhere near it. I've scraped it a few times in the race car, but only when I'm absolutely flat out during a race...and as they say, the closer you are when you hit it, the less it hurts...

Roy,

Sounds good to me and that date looks good as well, I will see what my mate says.

We will probably take:

Towcar + trailer + his car

and my car

just in case something goes wrong down there so if we do go there is some insurance for you.

He has the trailer/tow car so I will just have to clear the date with him.

My first track experience, cant wait

Evan

I might look at doing this moto concepts one now I'm not sure, but definately want to try wakefield. My mate is very keen on me joining the club his family is in "southern sports car club" and doing sprints, etc. Good thing about this would be that his dad is a mechanic and would help me out.

All i know is I keep speeding on the street (makes me feel guilty and generally shit), I really need to take it to the track.

Evan

I definitely suggest going to Wakefield a few times before tackling Eastern Creek.

Get used to picking racing lines and learn how your car handles at the limit. Wakefield is basically a racetrack in a big dirt field... It's short and tight, and really tests skills. If you stuff up, there's literally nothing to hit, so you just turn your car around, dust yourself off and go at it again... Great learning curve at Wakefield.

Eastern Creek however is a very high speed track. With speeds of upto 260km/h+ down the main straight, and corner speeds of 180-190km/h, if you stuff up (which you're bound to do when you're still learning how to drive on the racetrack), the results can be quite ugly.

Flashbacks of R33 GTRs running off the track at 200km/h and having a tea party with a wall and Porsche's spinning out and saying hello to concrete walls at Turn 12... :)

eeeek.

Thanks for the advice, if I was to go I wouldnt be alone I would be with a mate who has driven

oran, wakefield, ec many times, he tells me that in his opinion oran park is one of the hardest tracks.

I will ask him and his dad and see what they say.

top advice thanks Merli :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Roy, will you be stopping in at wakefield on the 9th september? Hopefully if the cars done (its in getting fuel system done at the moment) I should be down there on the 9th for my first track outing. Would be good meeting up with some people off here... still interested in coming down Merli?

Fingers crossed Ewen/Aurora will have his car back on the road and come along too.

Hey Amaru, there's an Eastern Creek day on 9 Sept as well, I think the sydneysiders are going to that instead.....

    • I have seen a case where the starter motor shorting against the casing caused a massive voltage drop + so much EMI that it caused all the sensors to spew garbage data at the ECU. Test the battery to make sure it has acceptable CCA/capacity first, I have gotten "brand new" batteries before that couldn't even power a 10W light bulb without dying probably because it sat in a warehouse too long without being charged. Only easy way to diagnose this 100% is put an oscilloscope on the battery and also look at key sensors to see if there's any clues.
    • There's a bunch of smaller shops that don't quite attract Singer money but are still hiring from that same pool of labor. Those are the body shops that you go to when you can't afford a Singer, but your old Porsche needs some serious bodywork. You can't exactly take those cars to the usual insurance body shops. When I say restomod, I mean they'll do something other than 100% OEM/OEM-equivalent aftermarket parts R&R. In the Porsche world this would be stuff like taking a 50k 964, doing a bunch of deferred maintenance/unwinding the nightmares the previous owners did to the car because a lot of people that own these cars tended to be penny wise, pound foolish types, then maybe some relatively simple off the shelf modifications to things like suspension, transmission, engine, headlights, etc. and you've spent 130k USD. When even the worst houses in the poor neighborhoods are worth 1M USD and the nice houses in wealthy neighborhoods are worth 3-10M USD suddenly 130k spent on a 50k car seems cheap.
    • Hoping to get a few ideas to help troubleshoot this issue, I'll try to keep it short.  A mate popped the motor in his 2018 LDV T60 with the 2.8 turbo diesel motor. He swapped it and I was his phone a friend when he got stuck.  The new motor is in, however it won't fire. The battery is literally brand new, when you crank it the volts very quickly (say 2 seconds of cranking) drop to 8 volts and the engine stops turning over. Watching the belts, I'd say they move about 5cm before coming to a stop. We put a booster pack on, no change.  The only potential issue I'm aware of is, when we pulled the motor the grounding strap was still attached. The strap copped a thrashing before we realised what was going on. It looks okay-ish but it's going to be replaced to rule it out.  The main challenge is, I wasn't there for 90% of the work. This is his first time doing any major work on a car and he was learning as he was going. He thinks everything has been put back together properly, however I'm not entirely confident that this is the case.  It would be good to get some ideas about what else to check. The car isn't spitting any codes so that doesn't help.  I've attached a photo, because why not lol.
    • I mean an N1 came with a minimal paint thickness compared to dealer models. It’s probably had a ton of vinyls and stuff possible a race paintjob or two over the years. you don’t buy an N1 for its stunning good looks or comfort 🤣 you buy it to send it and measure how much air you can get on the hill at Bathurst
