This kind of situation is usually a matter of having just the right tool for the job. From memory we used a combination of socket with various length extensions from the front of the car and ring spanner with just the right angle on the head up from below. Once the initial grip is cracked a 1/4 socket driver with good selection of extensions is very useful.

Or you can spend a couple of hours removing bits from the engine bay and attack it from the top. Enjoy!
