hey guys i have heard some guy tell me he was able to maintain drift on 3rd gear in his s13 sylvia. How is this possible when he has pretty much the same amount of power i do. ~150rwkw. As i personally can only manage to hold drift in 2nd in the ceffy. Maybe its just my technique?

BTW if there is a thread somwhere on this pleas epoint me. Ill like to know.

remember that its not power that counts in drifting...

ur cars much heavier than an S13 and weight has a big part in it... plus what handling mods does he have?

suspension setup is integral also and plays a massive part.

yeah i know power hasnt much to do.. but ive seen him drift and he enters drift on the same part of the road that i do. Just im assuming he has picked up more speed.

yeah u have apoint in his suspension setup. Apparenlty hes got a very tight lsd setup on his with bushes and 3000 bux of coilovers (HA and dampener adjustable). Mines is a very loose compared to his(mech diff). thats what ive been thinking is the main diff.

How does weight play in this? Ive only been drifting seriuosly for like 4 months or so. So im still getting the theorise sorted out.

uve been drifting for longer than i have... i have only mucked around a little in my old 32... but nothing properly on a track.

but i do read a lot... weight is going to play a HUGE factor when comparing ur HP/KW... hes only 150kw but his car is about 100kgs lighter... this means he will be able to accelerate faster than u... his car will also have a lower center of gravity... better weight distribution... all playing a major factor in how well the car is able to go into a corner.

Yeah, I have read a few times 200kgs is about 30hp, not sure if its right or not but hey.

Id say diff, and suspension would help. Mines a bit easy to get the arse out at times. Like Im almost never trying to get it taily, and it just starts to kick out, fun but yeah, can draw attention.

ive drifted my old mr2 gt b4 and it was nutting compared to the ceffy.. It so tail happy. :Bang:

Still im gonna see if can hold drift in 3rd next time. As my rev limiter cuts out at 7200 on 2nd and holding at 80km/h. So hoping to get better drift on 3rd at say 100km/h on 3rd. I think abit more practice toi get used to the car is in order.

BTW thnax guys. I did forget the power weight equation. Yesh those s13s are much lighter.

    • No need to drill any holes. There's plenty of access to reach through and behind all of that steel to "push" from behind with a pulling action on the slide hammer. There's all sorts of attachments you can screw on the end of them.
    • Yea the photos aren't the best. When I was pulling the bumper and headlights out there was a bodyshop guy looking on for it, there is a slight bend behind where the passenger headlight is, but we're talking a few MM and there is a little bit of a bend for the reo. That said it's supposedly well within the "Drill a hole in it and pull it out with a slide hammer to be close enough" and be on our way. The other option is to buy a GTR reo for the GTR bumper bits but this is a $2000+ fix for something Mr Hammer can probably do 99% of the job for and everything will/can line up pretty closely-to-good-enough.
    • That's a write off for sure... Part out? 😛 I kid. It looks like the rad support has a minor minor bend in it too where the rep support sits near. Could just be the photos (and me not wearing my glasses right now). Worst case is you can buy a new radiator support, have it swapped over, and leave the car in paint jail for 12 to 18 months while you build the motor to handle twin turbos or a Harrop SC...
    • It seems the definition of "Gregging" something might need to be expanded?
    • This is why I suggested that there is really nothing that can safely be done in the engine bay at this budget level. Just the work to reassure yourself that the engine won't instantly crap itself the moment the boost gets turned up will wear out the piggy bank long before the first turbo gets installed. Spend $10k and still not have any extra performance? My tip is a version of our standard advice from 15 years ago about buying a GTR, which is not to buy one unless you can afford to buy two. The new version is not to modify a GTR unless you have all the funds required to do it all at once, properly, and enough to rebuild it after it blows up.
