Yeh, so it would seem. Ill have to remember to take a warm glasses of water to put the probe in when i dyno my car

Some dyno operators always have a cup of coffee when they tune

Not being argumentative, or trying to stir anyone up, but would it be too much trouble next time you do a dyno run fudge a 2nd back to back run by perhaps placing the sensor closer to the turbo housing instead of the air filter...just to test the DD Software???

Roy, It is possible to have the software overcompensate for temperature, but it is recorded on the bottom of the shootout graph. The probe is meant to be infront of the airflow to the filter/airbox and the bonnet is meant to be closed. Therefore temps up to about 50 could be expected after numerous runs. Higher temps than that would be a bit odd. Speaking to the DD Dyno Trainer, he says that even air temps of up to 80-90 wouldn't affect the reading by more than a few hp.

Cool, but i have technicians telling me this stuff at work all day, it sometimes doesnt hurt to test the claims of suppliers before claiming stuff as fact. It sux when it turns out a little ways of fact and you now have the burden of repeating it in good faith

Again not being argumentative, just trying to nut out the differences...which appear to be more a Shootout 03 v Shootout 04 software thing

At the end of the day i dont care, its a dyno reading, im more interested in the calibration/software aspect iof the dyno

Roy, I agree that dyno's are a tuning tool, but ShootOut was designed to provide comparitive readings Australia wide, and from what I've seen of the ShootOut 04 dyno's, the results are virtually identical.

Having said that, I'm more than happy this weekend to do a test with the temperature probe, one reading cold air, and the other very hot air to see if we can confirm what we've been told. Should have the results for you on Monday.

I haven't been on the forum much lately so you may have already posted info regarding my questions Paul, have you run the car at the strip yet? And if so what numbers did you get? Even with a shitty 60 it must have some serious top end mph!

look, as i said, 3 weeks. i'l be in WA to try and settle this dyno debate.

i'll have mine run here in Vic, temp recorded and in shootout mode etc etc.

then 3 or so days later ill do the same in WA (steve permitting) so thats as close as we are going to get as to a "comparison" short of shipping the syno over east

You know that won't prove anything don't you? If I knew your were coming to MY (fictional) dyno shop to compare results and if I was a devious person, there are a few things I wouldn't do. I would simply not have a cup of coffee while dyno'ing YOUR car. Or I could remove the weight off the load cell while dyno'ing YOUR car. Or I wouldn't fill the tank of YOUR car with Turbomax. Or I wouldn't cover the intercooler and pipes with dry ice on YOUR car. Or......... well you get the drift.

Most of which goes totally against the Dyno Dynamics Shootout Code of Conduct and I know no self respecting Shootineer would ever do those sorts of things.

BTW. Turbomax, dry ice and a few other tricks are OK for some dyno comps.

Before Steve blows his stack, I am NOT NOT NOT saying that SST does any of this. I am merely pointing out some of the stuff that I have personally seen happen in SYDNEY and MELBOURNE. That's why DD came up with Shoot Out Mode software and the Code of Conduct. So consumers could go to an accredited dyno operator and know that the results are true. Then go to another accredited dyno operator and get exactly the same results, regardless of atmospheric conditions. By making this big effort, DD prove that they know there are crooks out there.

Why did DD go to this much trouble? Well my understanding is they got sick and tired of people complaining about inconsistent results from Dyno Dynamics dynos. You know the story, " I got 2000 rwkw at dyno ABC, I did some work to get an extra 500 kw and went to dyno XYZ and only got 200 kw extra. So Dyno Dynamics dynos are crap". DD knows full well that some dyno operators weren't straight and Shoot Out Mode fixes their "software" cheating and the Code of Conduct fixes the "hardware" cheating. Of course they charge for the software and accreditation, so they make some money too.

I use the dyno a a tool for tuning and testing, whether it shows true power or not I don't really give a shooot. As long as it is consistent. The result I am looking for is the single fastest lap time the car can do and (more importantly) how fast it does the full race distance. The chequered flag is my target, if I do it with 200 kw or 2,000 kw I don't care.

oh yes yes, i know all the sneaky stuff.

And it wont be happening with me :)

if i can at least get some, clarity. Ill be happy. Dyons for me are just a tuning tool as well. Numbers mean very little as to how the car performs

Steve and the boys at SST are fair dinkum. They do have some good results on the dyno, but more importantly the cars tuned there perform really well too.

I had my old R33 GTST run up on thier dyno a day after a drag meeting where I ran 13.3 @106mph. I had issues with rpm above 4000rpm or so which I wanted a dyno run to analyse a possible cause . I got a reading of 235rwhp at about 4000rpm from memory. This backs up my mph from the previous day quite well. It doesn't tell you whether the rest of my cars setup (non power making) makes it capable of the same time and mph, in the case of someone else getting the same power figure or higher.

I think Steve-SST, is probably a little frustrated with trying to show proof of anything when people won't accept dyno readings or even track results. At the end of the day it's good to get ideas about what works and what doesn't that have some evidence behind them. and whilst it's good to analyse results carefully we need to appreciate them as well. Why reinvent the wheel?

my 2c :)

As if ur car is gonna be ready in 3 weeks, u r dreaming :)

Are you gonna be driving to WA by yourself? coz its one damn boring drive from Melbourne

    • Just a thought, but instead of restricting, is it possible to do like an "up for review" kind of thing? Where say someone who's not an admin/mod tags, it would require approval for it to actually tag? User posts with a 'tag' > Admin/Mod Reviews > Approves tag > Tag now exists kinda thing? Just came across this thread so Im not too sure if Im straying off topic or not but forgive me if i am...
    • Yes, a plan for non-action is always my first sort of plan! I'm happy to see what falls out of invision's update. I had been having some thoughts on what to do with this the other day and they all seem to have fled my memory, after various solar panel induced traumas, squeaking suspension sphericals, etc etc, over the last little bit. I'll try and recall what I had in mind and make sure that I put it into print in some form before the Alzheimer's strikes again.
    • The ability to have both a 5500 stall for launching, and a regular lockup for every other scenario is pretty sweet. Does it actually work well like that though in the real world? Would it hold up to track use and otherwise you'd never know you had a stall converter in it? If so, that's awesome
    • The thing is, once the content has been tagged we can chop and change the end result as much as we want. Its identifying the content in the first place that needs to be done regardless of the final outcome.
    • Sorry @GTSBoy I thought I'd replied here. There's a new BIG version of invision coming out soon, it might be worth waiting until that happens as it contains a lot of improved functionality for tags. My suggestion would be to add a top level page (not thread) with some info on it and then link to sub pages for various topics. We could even just start really simple with 2 or 3 pages underneath it. Those pages could just have a view (like a pre configured search result) of the tags we choose to put on it. We could have some background or an intro on each of these pages. My only issue is that while admins and mods can update the existing content to contain the tags we want, new posts can have whatever tags the author wants. That said, the reason our tags are so messy is because of that, so maybe we restrict tagging to admins/mods in edits.
