Hopefully someone that has recently registered an 89 import can fill me in on their experiences.

I’ve read in a few places that you need to change your tires when you get a car over from Japan as the jap types haven passed Australian road standards.

One of my friends recently registered an 89 car and no one asked him what type of tires he had on his and got registered no probs.

So should I invest in a new set even if the car I’m getting (arrives tomorrow) has a set that still has a ton of tread on them.

Any insight would be Great.

Sitting in J-Spec's office, and they say that as long as the tyre is legal for use in australia, it should be all good... ie: legal tread, proper load rating and it has to have an Australia approved marking like DOT or E-Code.

When my FC RX-7 was registered it had tyres from japan. They were the worst tyres ever made, in the wet i slipped around dangerously just on normal acceleration - it was almost impossible to get around however, the car was still registered.

well i almost ran into a wall because I got new tyres during compliance, unfortunately the dealer forgot to mention that brand new goodyear f1's don't grip too well when they get warm. I wasn't driving the car hard or nothing, but when braking my car decided to go in another direction.

So yeah, its more the driver than the tyre in that instance
