Random loose cable

Alright driving tonight in the pouring rain i go through a massive puddle. almost straight afterwards i hear a clanking sound under the car. i don't know if it was just a coincidence with the puddle, but i got home and had a look under the car and there's a cable that looks like it's broken off from under the center of the car. i can only think that it's the handbrake cable, but the handbrake still works when i put it on. are there any other cable that run under the car alongside the driveshaft? otherwise i'll have to assume that only one of the cables ave broken and this still allows the other wheel to brake.
