Gday,

Engine = RB25DET

Car = Cefiro

Limitations = Stock turbo

Considerations = Engine reliability

Goal = 200rwkw+.

Mod path 1

1. GTR intercooler

2. All air stuff (filter, dump, exhaust etc)

3. Apexi AVCR

4. Apexi SAFC (or SAFC II whatever the different is)

Mod path 2

1. GTR intercooler

2. All air stuff (filter, dump, exhaust etc)

3. Apexi PFC (no boost module)

4. two-stage boost controller solonoid thingy (cheapie)

This will be street car with occasional track/drift use.

I probably won't be upgrading turbos (if at all) for a long time. So the 1st path has the advantage of inital small outlay.

On the other hand the 2nd path has flexibility.

Which one is better and why/what for?

I guess what I wanna know is in the meantime (before getting bigger turbo, injectors etc) can the PFC justify the money in performance?

My 20 cents worth....

Mod path 1

3. Apexi AVCR

4. Apexi SAFC

This leaves you no way to adjust the ignition timing, this is bad for power production and reliability. You might get to 200 rwkw but that is simply max power. Without igntiion timing tuning, the average power will suffer as will response.

Mod path 2

3. Apexi PFC (no boost module)

4. two-stage boost controller solonoid thingy (cheapie)

The PFC allows you to adjust all of the ecu parameters, but the boost controller may compromise the reliability and response. If price is the consideration, then the Autospeed design (Norgren valves) boost controller is the go. Do a search there is plenty of data on why.

With just a cat back exhaust and a PFC (with Boost Control Kit) I have seen a couple of RB25's make ~200 rwkw. But regardless of what you do your are always living close to the edge with the ceramic turbine particularly if you are going to do some laps, sideways or not.

seems not too bad to me..

i wouldn't bother with the AVCR or S-AFC.. you'll only want the full ECU soon enough.

pickup a 2nd hand EBC (other than the overpriced Apexi) for around $350, or just stay with the bleeder I reckon until a bit later. Wouldn't worry too much about the turbo .. just get another when it breaks, you can go though a few before it starts getting expensive. Just maybe run lower boost and wrap the dump pipe to reduce outlet temps.

When my next car gets here, even $300 difference between the bleed valve and EBC I can keep thinking of a few extra things to spend the money on (i.e. some whiteline springs)

Sounds like the PFC is the better bet. I've heard that the PFC boost controller module is not that good however and some people I've seen seem to be using the PFC and a AVCR. Is this just really high end stuff?

So the general consensus would be stay on the less push side of 12psi? I don't want to kill the turbo till I get an aftermarket one or upgraded one.

Mate i'd be happy to get a intercooler for $150 - Justjap said $650 for GTR cooler and micks metalcraft $1000 for pipes.

LOL thats total and utter garbage 'retail' prices but i hope it's not near what I'd be having to pay.

Other than getting custom FMIC pipes someone must make knock off cefiro pipes surely.

Okay. so PFC + boost controller module is circa $1500 i think. Plus tune.. hmm I'd say that's very much dependant on the availability of a cheap cooler.
