a mate of mine was pulled over and they said you cant drive a 33 on Ps. He didnt believe them so he called the cop station, or Vic Roads, or someone, and they said that its only the GTR that Ps cant drive. They removed his fine or warning or whatever, and never heard anything of it again.

.

i know that the tightness level of cops depends on the areas and their knowledge of the cars around them... but aybee.. thats really interesting, maybe the power/weight restrictions have changed since i last checked, or maybe vicroads have made a mistake somewhere?

Since R33 are imports, VicRoads may not have factory spec data for it, thus they may only refer to R32 GTR which were Australian delivered, with factory spec 206kw. Thus the power restriciton on GTR, but since R32/33/34 GTS-t were not officially imported by Nissan, they may not have that data and therefore those cars were not in their list. However doing the proper calculation based on factory spec, if all skylines were australian delivered then GTS-t could be included in the list (except perhaps R32 GTS-t, as the RB20DET factory spec has less power than RB25DET)

that could be possible but it seems unlikely that the cops wouldnt be into this by now.

What im trying to understand is why they use power figures from the factory (at the flywheel) and not at the wheels? I understand that getting these kind of figures would be a problem but it seems like an inaccurate measure of the cars true power

you're thinking is right, power figure at the wheels is not as accurate as factory spec claim (although we know that Nissan may have 'detune' factory spec claim on GTR to make it look like didn't exceed 206kw gentlemen's agreement).

There's so many factor on dyno that can affect power at wheels, tyre size, ambient temp, worn clutches, etc. Each car even from the same make and model can show different figure on dyno, especially 2nd hand ones, and testing each car out there for every P-plater would be uneconomical, so just use the factory spec figure and calculate from there what is allowed/not allowed.

If you keep getting pulled over my advice to you is log it (write it all down) and make a complaint. I"m not sure who does police complaints in victoria.

I remember one of my friends bought a car from a drug dealer - he used to get pulled over by d's, undercover, highway, local - every cop car. After he found out who the car belonged to and complained to his dad (some richy rich conections guy) who made a complaint to the police and ombudsman (or whoever) and he never got pulled over again.
