I have an R34 (auto) and want to change the transmission oil...can anyone tell me if there is a drain plug on the trans or do i have to drop the bottom pan on the trans and drain the oil that way then replacing the gasket on the trans...any help would be appreciated.....

Could anyone also recommend any sort of oil to run in the transmission...

if you want to get this done at a mechanic PM me as my mechanic (from the highpoint area) did mine no probs so hs done a skyline auto before. i can give you his details.

as for your question:

when mine was done, the sump was dropped to dran the oil. the old gasket was stuck like you wouldn't believe so had to be scraped off, and the filter and gasket replaced. Don't know what oil he used but he gets it in barrells. He used mbil 1 for enging oil so i assume he has a contract with mobil for gearbox oil also...

Ps you still live near taylors lakes? i haven't seen your car around for a while... (white R34 with no spoiler right?)

Take the hose off the transmission cooler at the front of the car and point it into a bucket.

Put the transmission in neutral and start the car.

When the fluid stops pumping out it's empty.

If you use the drain plug only about 3/5 of the fluid will come out.

You don't put oil in auto transmissions.

I'm about to put Redline High Temp ATF in mine and I'm expecting good things. Sharper shifting, less slippage. Will let you know.

Yeah sorry i meant to say fluid....any way this way sounds easier then pullin the bottom pan out...is it safe to run the car in netrual with no fluid while its draining?...

Another question...ive got a seprate transmission cooler which i wanted to put on..is it as simple as removing one of the hoses from the bottom of the radiator and connecting it to the cooler and the connecting the other side back into the radiator??... making it like a loop??....anyone had any experiances with trans coolers.. are they worth puttin on?

You already have a transmission cooler.

Are you going to the track?

I have been to several track days and only once had the auto light come on which a couple of slow laps fixed.

I'm thinking of putting a bigger one on myself at some stage though.

I don't understand what you mean by your references to your radiator there.

Oh ok...i thought that it works in the same principle as an R31...which the fluid runs through the bottom of the radiator (i think)...The trans cooler i got is off a R31GTS which works through looping it through the hoses at the bottom of the radiator...i thought the 34 would have worked on that same principle....sorry if i confused you or anyone else

About 5 litres if you pump it out as above or about 3 if you drain from the sump. Now you can see why it's better to pump it out. This is the 34 box. It's different from the 33 box but I have no idea how different.

Hey Warren...i dont live there anymore i moved out from that area... my 34 does have the rear spoiler on it....there was another one in the area without a spolier so it must have been that one that you saw

Hi mate, if u ever try flush the transmission before, i think u should do one for your transmission. Because each time when u changed the transimission fuild, u only could get about 50-60% out, so there still have about 40% old fuild left in the transmission. After u put the new fuild in, may be a couple of months the fuild will get dirty again. And at the end u will end up with the transmission problem, or f**k up the transmission early.

In my opinion if u havent try it b4, U should go to the spealist transmission garage to change ur fuild, i meant the shop who has the machine to change it. By doing that u could change about 90-95% fuild out of the transmission.

After changed the fuild , u could actually feels the transmission shift better and smoother.

Well I did mine on the weekend and you might just be right Steven.

I did the drain thing from the transmission cooler (it's the top hose you take off) but only 3.5L or so came out. I then took off the sump bolt and there was none left in it.

After I put the new fluid in I noticed that I could have taken off the dust cover that sits between the sump and the bell housing (about 10 bolts as there looks to be some stiffening brackets there) and got to the torque converter. I don't know if this would have done me any good but I'm sort of expecting that there might have been a drain plug in the torque converter itself so you can get the rest of it out.

I wasn't trying to make mine shift smoother I was trying to make it shift harder. To this end I did get some improvement although perhaps not quite as much as I had hoped for. I guess this is because of the fluid I couldn't get out.

For the info of people out there I poured the new fluid down the dipstick pipe no worries.

Workshops have a pump they use to pump it out of the torque converter.

I have 12 liters of Redline Hi temp in the boot of the car, and i'm looking for a workshop that has that pump, but no luck so far.

One would think that all automatic gearbox specialist should have one.

The ones i spoke to so far use the same methods Abo Bob used.

If anyone knows of anyone in Syd west, please let me know.

I was under the assumption that you only needed about 8 litres??

RedLineGTR - They come in 4 ltr cannisters so I bought 3 just in case I need 9 litres. I'd hate it if i started the job and wouldn't have enought. I guess better be safe than sorry.

If i don't open the last one i can always return it back to the shop.

Update on the fluid change.

Finally I found a guy who had the machine to get all the fluid out of the trans. The problem is, if you use the machine you cant get the filter, gasket & the pan cleaned.

So on his recommendation I got this done first, and he put in some Castrol oil. After a few weeks I’ll go back and get the system flushed and put the RedLine Hi Temp fluid.

My pan had a shitload of some goldish sparkling stuff on the bottom of it and a 5cm piece of the dip stick – what the ****.
