Ok now i, like alot of other people am in a confused state. I am unsure of what turbo i should get. Although i have a good idea so i am after opinions from u all. I have an R33 gtst which i am looking at sending my stock turbo away as it has blown an oil seal, sending it to GCG where they will hi flow+rebuild it and then put it on. My cars dead at the moment but im in the middle of the build. Current items are:

RB26 Crank & Rods

Forgies

1.6mm hks headgasket

head porting

256 cams

hks twin plate

engine fully balanced

N1 oil pump

power fc

front mount intercooler

gtr intake plenum and fuel rail, injectors etc

I spent as much as i could on the motor to get it to a strongish state and now i have come up short on buying a big turbo setup. So what i am after is a turbo that has good driveabilty, power there when i need it and a basic upgrade FOR NOW. This is why i think the gcg hiflow option is a good choice, what do others think???????????

Hey dude,

I gotta GCG highflo on my R33, it spools up nicely, I cant tell you what power to expect out of it yet as my injectors are maxed atm, with 215rwkw. The highflow I guess would be a good choice, except like you said you are gonna change to a bigger setup eventually, why not just by another stockers turbo and save the extra bucks you would spend on a highflow on your bigger setup?

true......funnily enough i didnt think of that, i had always thought about buyin something abit bigger and making do with that power for awhile till i could afford to go big. But the highflow will make me happy for along time considering my car only made 160rwkw beforehand. I think even with 215kws thats a big jump. i just want to drive like a grandma for awhile, i lost my licence and cant wait to get it back, wont be racing everywhere this time

I don't know what your highflow work is costing (but I'll guess at around $1000-$12000). Have you thought about a second hand HKS 2540? Should be able to pick one of those up for under $1500 or even a HKS 2530 would give you low to mid 200 kws atw.

We have an R34 GTT that makes 265 rwkw using a GCG ball bearing hi flow of its standard turbo. It has what I call a full bolt on kit (no internal mods though);

Tomei 260 Poncams

Split dump

Hi Flow Cat (very hi flow)

3.25" exhaust

Pod filter

Heat shield

CAI (big one)

R34 GTR standard intercooler

Ported with polished combustion chambers (cc matched)

Tomei injectors

Tomei fuel pump

Power FC with boost controller

Low/rear mount exhaust manifold (like an R31 GTSR)

Electric fan

OS Giken twin plate (very light chrome molly flywheel)

Oil cooler

It runs 1.3 bar (all the time, none of this hi/low boost crap)

Fitted over 2 years ago, done 50,000 k's and still going strong. Did an 11.9 at 120 mph on Goodyear Drag Slicks last year. I am not enthused by drag racing, so I only run when I have too. I have tried a couple of turbos on it and this one is my favourite for daily driving, bit of circuit work and the occasional drag session.

Hope that helps :)

I reckon get a new turbo like GT3040 or a HKS as you can pick them up for around $2000,

Due to the fact that it will cost you about $1000 or more for high flowing your stock turbo, And to take advantage of the motor that you’re building it would make more sense to do it while it’s off the road now instead of having to change it in a few months time. when you want more power (as we all do) :-) Funds permitting off course.

And you can sell your stock turbo for a reasonable price and save up the difference.

$1000 for high flowing

$400 - 600 for stock sale - dependant on condition of turbo

= $500 difference or less for new Turbo ???

His standard tubo has busted oil seal so wont be selling for too much.

But yeh, GCG highflow is an awesome option for most of us, but if i has forged internals etc i wouldnt be bothering with something that small or a 25xx

Ide be holding out for something in the HKS 30xx

SK

Whats the difference between a GCG hi flow and a hi flow from a reputable turbo shop, i presume not much???  Essentially its still your turbo being rebuilt.

I prefer the ball bearing core hi flow, some turbo shops do a plain bearing hi flow. It's cheaper, but I'd pay the extra for balls and water cooling every time. :D

Please excuse my ignorance, but what exactly are Poncams? This setup is something that im going to be looking at, as I dont particularly want to rebuild the motor with forgies/rods/crank if I can avoid it. I was told at unique autosports that I wouldnt want to go anywhere over 230rwkw with stock internals, from your experience SK can you please tell me what you think the safe level of an rb25 is, the number in my head is 250rwkw ive got 215 atm with:

Trust FMIC,

EMS stinger,

Blitz boost controller, 3in exhaust including dump (not split though),

GCG High flow,

SARD fuel reg.

My injectors are maxed out.

* The car is an R33 with 80k on the clock. Motor is apparently healthy with good compression.

Thanks for your help :D

Hi Sparki, Tomei have a range of camshafts they call Poncams, they make really a good set that work with the VVT on RB25's, best I have seen so far. Fairly mild duration at 256 degrees on R33's and 260 on R34's (they have solid followers) with the highest lift you can run and not touch the valve springs and cylinder head.

SK can you please tell me what you think the safe level of an rb25

If it's tuned right, there is nothing wrong with >300 rwkw. But they get a bit peaky and laggy at that power level for my liking. I find around 250 rwkw (as you suggested) to be a good all round power level.

Hope that helps :D

Ok, I'll ask, did the GCG hiflow change your spool up. Does it come on sooner, or later. Going on what you said SK [being better for a daily drive], I guess its not peaky. I'm churning out 200 rwkw at the moment, and the hiflo option sounds like its the go for more power, but not too much power [which makes the car a b#tch to drive, especially in the wet]. Somewhere around the sub 250 sounds good to me.

Bt the way, I've got a pod, z32, fmic, full 100mm exhaust, injectors, and pump, so the turbo is next in the engine dept.

I actually think tuning (SAFC or even better Power FC) should be next on your list.

I believe if I took a standard RB25 and just swapped turbos (and did nothing else) the spoool up would be later, it is a bigger turbo after all. Anyway "spool up" is not a very good description, what I can say is the R34 GTT makes more power EVERYWHERE with the mods, than it did when standard. It makes more power off boost because of the tuning, exhaust, porting, inlet, filter and cams. It makes more power on boost with tuning, turbo, exhaust, porting, inlet and cams all helping there. It's a package, it will only ever be as good as its weakest link.

Hope that helps :)

    • Hey @Butters, did you end up getting this clutch in ? I have just ordered to a uniclutch track to go in my getrag 6 speed that’s in my BNR 32
    • I know you don't want to hear this comment, but I can't not say it.  I just can't see 200kw being worth the time and effort. Its like guys with NA cars, putting in headers/exhaust/tune for a massive 20% jump in power. Great, the slow car is still slow and you're down $10,000.  My vote is leave it NA or price in a gearbox upgrade and shoot for at least 300KW, preferably 350KW+.  Now you have a NC that will try to kill you from time to time and will be exciting to drive
