heres some pics i've taken of the wiring up of my engine to the r30 electrical syastem. if you have any questions leave a post and i'll put a more detailed write up for ya...

i'll update the pics when i get my digi camera back;

more detailed info posted 28/12/04

from the white/red wire at the back of the ignition a blue wire runs through to the ecu, a fuse was put at the end then it links/splices into a white wire with a black stripe and silver bands.. this white wire goes to the main relay (4 wires out of it, 1 orange, 2 white with black strip, 1 black with white strip). from the main relay the 2 white/black strip wires are connected together to make one wire....

from ignition the black/white stripe wire has a red wire spliced into it going to the ecu, it then is split into 2 fused wires,

the first fused wire goes to a thick white wire that goes to the fuel pump relay, with the fuel pump relay there are 4 wires, 1 orange, 1 white/purple stripe, 1 white/black stripe, 1 thick white wire...he has cut the thick white wire, the white/purple and the white/black wires.. the white only wire is connected to a wire running to the fuel pump its self... the white/black wire is extended to connect to a black/pink (pin 18) wire comming out of the ecu...the white/purple wire is spliced into the orange wire then that connects to the red wire running to the ignition, at that same point they are then connected to the other half of the thick white wire that dissapears into the firewall....

the second fused wire from the red wire goes to a black/red (pin 45) wire from the ecu

the pinout put numbers i refer to i got from www.rb20det.com

Please excuse my ignorance but can't the Rbxx loom be spliced into the engine harness connector in the middle of the firewall ?

This would be my plan .

1) Mount RB computer in std location and feed loom from engine bay to ECU

and connect .

2) Plug RB loom plugs to engine sensors .

3) Cut plug off MR30 engine harness to graft onto RB loom to supply power

and signal to EFI and Fuel Pump relays .

Things I dont know about RB's are need speed sensor input ?

need map sensor as well ?

The FJ20's loom has a plug not too far from the main ECU interface . I'm not

sure what its for or if RB20DET looms are like this . Appart from The RB ECU and

loom to the firewall I would not expect to have to do any wiring inside the car .

Are my ideas valid or have I missed something ?

Cheers A .

the thing to know is that most of the rb loom is not needing to be touched just feed it through the hole in the fire wall. the trouble is the ignition connection to the ecu and control of the fuel pump, mostly external things to wire in. the only other thing is a sensor (temp i think) at the front of the block that is spliced into a fat clump of wires at the fire wall.

I don't really understand the ignition conection to computer problem , surely this is a plug that plugs into the ECU . The coil loom should plug via the ignitor to the engine harness to access the ECU . All the harness should need from the existing loom is power supply and signal access to ECU and FP relays . The FJ20 version also has the water tmp sender up the front of the engine and wired through the engine harness to the firewall connector . It also has signal feed to its unique idle air and EGR vacum pulse soleniods . The only other thing it has is FPR switched power to the cold start air regulator valve . All these things can be tapped into at the main engine harness connector on the firewall . All R30's I've seen have that connection and all engine controll wiring in a fuse/relay box next to the brake booster . What was in your car that required the alterations in the cabin area ?

Cheers A .

your starting to make it sound hard! OK all that was done in the cabin area was connection the ECU power to the ignition, what i'll do is over the next few days when the car comes back i'll take some more detailed pics the wiring in the cabin and replace the ones above. i'll look at the r30 wiring diagram and see what wires are what and post up a more detailed discription!

Fair enough , I just keep thinking that IGN PWR is available at the firewall connector . Mind you I have not got my hands on an R32 RB20 engine harness or wiring diagram to see how the R32's tic . I gather it all goes in with the MR30 X member and R32 brackets plus minor mods to gearbox mounts/tunnel hole . Is it a shit fight with the console ?

Don't mean to sound insulting, but if you are going to go to the hassle of swapping engines, whats to stop you going for an RB 25 DET instead of an RB 20 DET, given that from a legal viewpoint, the R30s were available with an L28? (Or was that just the 4 doors?) Mmmmmmmmm, more torque and 180+kW bog stock, standard.

machg

at the time i did the conversion i was able to get the rb20det installed and wired up, the r32 master cylinder and booster installed, the r32 radiator installed a new hybrid fmic and custom piping, new konis adj suspension all round, lowered king springs, whiteline sway bars front and rear, new dba slotted rotors and bendix comp X pads all round all for about $1000 dollars more then getting the rb25det, gearbox and loom just installed and wired.. it was just a dollars thing!! with good surrport systems on the rb20 and a rb25 turbo or vg30 180rwkw is not that hard to get....

have a look at the "dr30 with rb engine"??? thread in this section for more info on the other side of the install... :run:

Machg , mine will be an RB26/30 using a single turbo . My interest in the RB20 electrics is because its that loom I'll use with an Apexi PFC . RSX 84 does the R32 GTR/GTST booster go straight in or need mods ?

Thanks A .

P.S sorry earlier on , I gather by ignition you meant ignition on power supply . I re- read and I sounded a bit intense , cheers A .

Were you thinking of doing a detailed write up of the RB20DET wiring into HR30 ?

I'd really like to know the finer details ie speed input , tacho probs etc .

Thanks A .

could some one give me the scematic for the plug in the middle of the fire wall? ive installed an l24e into my hilux but need to get power to it and to the fuel pump....preffereable without trial and error blowing my computer up

if anyones looking heres a link to wiring diagrams for the r30

http://au.geocities.com/timsmr30/R30skyline.html

good info site but was never finished, shame don't know if he still has the r30 or not?

just posted the info you wanted hope it helps, if it makes no sence ask more questions.....i have new pics but hotmail not working to retrive them???

booster goes straight on....

  • 1 year later...

first of all sorry for all the questions

What size fuses were used on the fused wires?10A?

Did you use the RB20 alloy engine mounts between the block and the rubber mounts?

In the 2 photos of engine bay, is the white wire the same wire from water sensor?? to the old R30 loom on fire wall, if so which wire does it splice into?

"The white only wire is connected to a wire running to the fuel pump itself"

Where on the fuel pump is this wire connected???

if ya have anymore pics of the wiring or any part of the conversion they would be much appreciated, or any tips/tricks or any problems or mods needed

also what is the pic of the plugs hanging down by the accelerator pedal showing??im not sure?

Thanks

    • Howdy friends, So another weird one today, I was looking into replacing some broken clips holding the front grille for the R32 GTR (part number 01553-03831), and noticed the brackets which are supposed to hold the grille in place were also missing 😑. I do recall seeing this issue many years ago, but didn't fix it at the time. A quick look on eBay and I was able to find the genuine brackets, along with all the screws which suited the headlights (part numbers 26042-08U05,26092-08U05). Happy days!....  Once they arrived however there was an extra nut in the packaging which implied that there should also be a bolt or a stud, and sure enough, after a bit of searching I found this thread from 2013, and @Ants clearly shows a stud should be present. Reading around a bit more, it's possible the headlights on my car are the "povo pack" headlights as mentioned by @funkymonkey in this thread way back in 2008. This could explain why the studs are missing on my set of headlights. Looking at the headlight diagram I wasn't able to see a suitable part number for the stud itself. The headlight did indeed have a recess that looked like it would accept a stud, but interestingly no thread or anything obvious how the stud would be affixed to the headlight, I suspect it may have been glued in, press fit, or melted into the plastic at the factory. Another member may be able to clarify if they happen to have a genuine set of N1 headlamps. The only thing we have to work with within the recess is a keyway which likely is there to prevent the stud from rotating within the recess. In any case, back to 3D printing, I put together a model which acts like a pug with a friction fit inside this recess, making use of the keyway so it doesn't rotate while tightening a bolt. Printing in TPU will allow it to slightly swell making a nice snug fit without cracking the part. I've designed the adaptor it to accept an 20 mm M6 bolt (stainless with a cap head in my case), as opposed to the standard M5 stud and I made use of the standard galvanised split washer that came with the genuine brackets from Nissan. Once the bolt and screws were all in place, giving the bracket a gentle shake gave the classic "shaking the car" feeling, very solid, which gives me confidence this is going to be able to hold on much better than the janky solution which seems to have been here for the past decade or so. Overall I'm really pleased with how this turned out and maybe there are more people out there running these headlights without a centre stud at all! • Hey everyone, This is my first post apart of the introduction. I tried searching a bit on the forum but couldn't really get a straight answer. I got the car to my mechanic as I felt it being weak. It seems that it was missing on two cylinders due to the injectors. I had all my injectors clean and the car runs much better. The mechanic also confirmed my suspicions that the cat is clogged and needs to be tackled asap. The cat rattles a bit and the hot exhaust warning frequently lights up when driving after getting the injectors clean. In my introduction I was asked about what modification I might be interested in and mentioned a cat delete. From what I was told, this is not really beneficial on the RB20DE and there are more cons than pros.  Could perhaps anyone give some suggestions on what the best course of action would be since the current cat is toast and needs to be removed/replaced anyway? I can also sometimes smell a strong smell of fuel, but I'm not sure if this is related.
    • Hope the cans went down well at least
    • 255 can't go wrong with the price.
    • When I was replacing my pump due to being stranded in the wrong state, I went with the Deatschwerks 320lph kit. It is a direct plug in to the stock wires, harness, everything. It comes with a plug... but you can plug the OEM plug directly into this thing. https://justjap.com/products/deatschwerks-dw300-fuel-pump-nissan-s13-silvia-r32-r33-r34-skyline-c34-stagea?currency=AUD Downside: Won't actually flow that much on boost if you want to push it on E85, but it's comparable to the 040/255 etc. Little more actually.
