Now that's what I call a high flow cat!!;)

Nice job Brendan. Mate, I'm not too far away, if you need a hand sometime give me a shout. What guys like you an me need though is people with tiny little hands to get in all the tight spaces...

Richard - I have no clue what you are talking about.

Well - nearly got the HKS 2835R on now - Pics to come.

I got one nut on the turbo flange to go - that's it - It's a tricky little bugger - You are right Richard - I need someone with small fingers and hands to get it started.

So should be back on the Rd soon - need a reducer/silicon 90deg bend if anyone has one lying around.

Then small adjustment to the tune to compensate for the slightly smaller turbo - and Bob's your Uncle.

Cheers,

Richard - I have no clue what you are talking about.

hehe.

Just wait 'till 3pm, then head down to your local High School as the year 7 kids come out just offer one of them a free ride in your line if they'll squeeze their little hand in there and start the nut for ya. Wait a minute, scratch that, possible persecution as suspected peadophile might make this one for plan B. Instead just keep fu:)

Good job. Now I wanna know when you can take me for a spin!

hey!! I am missing something? I just saw the words HKS2835R in your post? what happend with the 3040? I though it was the shiznit? just a check/fix needed then back on it goes?

Will still be a weapon with the 2835, I imagine it will come on boost pretty hard and early compared to the 3040.

R

Nah - a challenge :D

Richard - 2835 is interim - whilst I decide on 3040 options. Also to see the diff between the 2835 and the 3040 with the same setup.

Options for 3040:

a) GCG Rebuild $950

B) New Garrett CHRA from the US $ approx $1200 delivered

c) GCG Rebuild and new compressor - prolly about $1300

d) looking at other options too - anyone got any other thoughts ?

With the new Comp wheel - should be a beast. But where to use all that goodness ?? ha ha ha :)

B-man, I don't have a 90 deg elbow handy, but if you can wait while I nip down the shops I can "fabricate" one for you using cardboard and masking tape. Trust me bro, my bother uses these hoses on his 8 second RX3.

Fully.

Richard

Well boys - it lives.

As it turned out, I had a 90 deg reducer bend left over from one of the other turbos I had on my car at some stage :)

So it's running - I took it for a burn tonight - boost comes on heaps earlier - I can tell cause the BOV makes heaps more noise, and earlier, compared to when the 3040 was on.

My dash lights are all busted (fuse I think and havent been f'ed fixing it), so I couldn't see tacho and boost guage - tomorrow , I'll get a much better idea of what is happening.

Quick tune to make sure everything is in order and lets see what happens.

Shit I have learned a lot about turbos doing all of this.

You can theorise all you want - but see shit for yourself really drives home the differences in compressor size, AR, turbine size and what effects these have on the charactaristcs of your turbo/engine combination.

    • I’m doing some side developments on SR20det S13 engines, its one my hobby cars used it to compare flow capacity of some smaller size wheels. SR20det is one of another JDM legendary engines I'm sure there are plenty of SR enthusiasts on this forum, I will share results some common turbo configurations here. a quick run down of what the car is: Wide body 180sx Type X with black top engine (blue). It has: Stock bottom end Haltech 1500 ECU 5-0 motorsports trigger kit Kelford SR20DET Beehive Spring with Titanium Retainers Kelford Cams SR20DET S13 188-B 268/272 Cams G25-660 Turbocharger in T2 .64 rear housing internally gated ARP Head studs MLS head gasket 1000CC ID injectors Walbro 450L Fuel pump Front mount cooler kit JJR’s 3 inches turbo back exhaust (its too short for the 180sx it had to be extended) Pump 98 fuel Hub Dyno tune So far made 270rwkws at 22psi full boost by 4500RPM. Engine is very knock limited hence a pretty bad looking top end. From previous experiences it seems like SR20dets are happier with bigger size turbine, some thing like a GT30 would make way better top end, but on same time response is lost. It won't be a problem with S15 VCT engines. I'll be testing alternative turbine housing, turbine wheel and possibly dump pipe options for extra flow to resolve the problem and of course E85 would resolve all the issues.
    • Awesome writeup and details. Thanks for sharing the story so far. I can relate to parts of it with my previous car and some of the issues I had to deal with.
    • Wow the colour matched hard top completely transforms the car. Are there any nice front lip options for the car or is that off the table?
    • Generally yes but for some reason I've been ruthless this time around!  I might even need to do another tip run after the way I've finally been able to hit the delete button on shit I've stepped over, stepped around and tripped over for the past 10 years!
