hi peeps, im full on new to the skyline scene...actually i havent even started yet

but im a huge fan of skylines, especially the r34...

anyways, im still on my l's, and seeing how im soon to get my red p's...i was hoping i would be able to get me a skyline r34 for my first car...

here is where the problem begins...

my dad is willing to get me a car...around the budget of 40-50k

but he is unwilling to get me a skyline r34 for 37k

he tells me that second hand cars will need constant maintenance after several years

he also said that insurance will be very very expensive...i was thinking of 'just car' insurance, but he says something is wrong with it...there has to be a catch sumwhere...

can u help me win my dad over? give me sum strong arguement points to get him to change his stubborn view...cos i have tried to compromise with him heaps of times...and everytime turns to arguing...i want to shut him up and agree that the skyline really is a good car

"shut him up and agree that the skyline really is a good car"

Youre right. the skyline is a really good car. hence we would prefer as many to stay on the road not in wreckers yards, which as a first car many do end up.

not trying to judge ya... but the history isn't good.

As mentioned above, yes the Skyline is a great car, no you have NO CHANCE in getting cheap insurance and before you keep argueing with your dad you should give Just Cars a call and get a sample quote, I think this will be enough to turn both you and your dad off. Just remember he is also thinking of your best interests...

Yes they insure modified cars and are open to young drivers, but they will hit you in the pocket for it.

Also, why not think about getting something to learn on and build your way up to owning a Skyline or performance car, I know it isn't what you want to hear but I would hate to be reading about you in the papers...

Man, I think I went all Dr Phil on him :D

I bought a r33 gtst as my first car. although it assisted me in getting a bad driving record i thankfully had no accidents (touch wood) up to date. I dont think it is a bad thing getting a skyline as a first car, i am sure many people on these forums had it as a first. Just be sensible on the roads and take care of your car which will in return take care of you.

You should be spending $5k max of YOUR OWN money on a first car, $40-50k of daddy's money will only make people hate you.

Get an R31 and wait 'till you're a bit older for a 34, an R31 has plenty of power for a P Plater.

Anyway, from all the skylines, the R34 would be ideal. Traction control being one of the advantages. If you are going to be reckless, you can still do it in a beat up R31.

Im just guessing that you might be an international student? If you are, I know of many that has started with expensive cars. One guy went from a lancer Gli which he drove for 6 months to the current series M3. If you arent, it doesn matter.

Pretty hard to arque with dad, when he is going to be paying for it! Best bet is to take him car shopping. Reminds me of a friend of mine who wanted a WRX but dad wouldnt get it because of the quality issues he had set in his mind. Purchased a honda instead. :P

Choose a good condition R34 if you are really going to purchase one. Make sure the condition is tip top and kms genunine and low if possible. That will atleast help with having low maintainance issues. Insurance??........... well, that I cant help...

insurance will definately be i big sting but it looks like money's no a huge concern with a budget of 50g where you could pick up a 34 Gt for 30ish (i think)

advanced driving course straight away and respect your car, if you wanna do burnouts and carry on like a goon get an 80's shitbox and have all the fun and fines that you need

my advice is more or less what the other blokes said , get a run around explore your limits save the 40k and in a few years add your 2 cents and you never know you might be able to afford GTR R34 if thats you want.

have to crawl before you walk, life is a lesson :P

and thats my 2 cents.

Yeah an R34 will end you up in all sorts of trouble...I managed that with an N/A R34...but have become a bit more sedate with the turbo now :P

Insurance for you will be insanely expensive...as for you Dads comments on Just Cars, they are about the only insurance company that'll cover you for an agreed value AND most importantly NOT try to screw you over in a claim...providing you're truthful with all you details + mods, they will back you the whole way.

I've had nothing but excellent dealings with them.

If your dad buys you a turbocharged vehicle for your first car let alone a skyline he is extremely irresponsible.

You and BACKUP would get on like a house on fire
