you would really have to get a figure from a shop to get an accurate price...i have been told a rough price. Its a real ball buster of a job i have been standing at a lathe for 2 days just de-weighting it....then theres a heap of time balancing it up then polishing......for me to do more of them the money would have to be right

Fortunately Troy doesn't charge himself for labour, which helps cut the cost a lot

The RB26DETT Troy is building is magnificent. It should be in a carbon fibre chassis sportscar, not something as ordinary as a pressed steel chassis GT-R. Wait... I need to be careful, I will give him ideas!!!

p.s. That first V12 pic scared me a bit. I thought you had made a RB52DETTTT.

FARKIN HELL MAN .. thts impressive .. Knife edging a crank for a GTR ... jesus ..they rev hard as it is ....

being involved and around speedway all my life (hoping to have one done for my holden 6cyl sometime for next seasons engine)..this shit is pretty common .. but in a road going GTR .. far out .. all the best with it ..look forward to the results!! .. just hope it doesnt go bang on ya?

u thought about cross drilling it as well? .. hell while your at it .. go a dry sump setup!! if thats what ur looking to do ..free up the crank from oil "weight"

Cheers

Matt

i was gathering parts for a drysump but it was going to be a hassle fitting it all in a road going gtr which was a pain coz i really wanted it....this particular engine was also meant to be an RB30 but the i didnt really have the time to do the sump modification....oh and the cranks are cross drilled from factory

Ah I was wondering what happened to doing an RB30 - still thinking of doing one in the future? Btw, tops stuff again, although as far as a D.I.Y thread it's probably out of 99.999% of people's league!

Well Australias population is about 20,000,000 so by my calculation that means about 200 people would be able to D.I.Y this... nice, I like it! Anyway, enough stupidity.

The coolest thing about this is you will probably get that race engine style silence the instant you turn the motor off.

How far off is the car now ylwgtr2? I think everyone is really looking forward to seeing it hit the track.

This give a bit more graphical explaination ..

the pic in "Edge shape designed with hydrodynamics" section says all..

ylwgtr2,

would this weaken the standard crank as they are only semi counter weighted, say at higher than 9000rpm rev etc, wouldn't the crank starts to twist prematurely??

keep up the good work :)

they have gone the other way to fully counter balance the crank.....putting the original crank between 2 centres with a fine bearing inserted in each end of the shaft the crank will "fall" to a heavy spot...even when pushed to a 170 degree rotation it falls with great fury to the heavy spot!I am amazed they get away with it!One would assume that the tomei one wouldnt move at all....much like the crank that i have just done....poke it with your finger and it just rotates a little and doesnt want to reverse or stop in the same spot twice.....Heres the finished unit next to its porker brother....its shed 3.5kg in weight in just under a week...try doing that on a jenny craig diet :(

  • 4 months later...

The counterweights actually do serve a useful purpose.....they balance the reciprocating forces........which in a high revving engine is extremely important....probably moreso than balancing/lightening the rotating components...hence Jun/Tomei having fully counterweighted race cranks and lightweight pistons and rods....

Maybe those nissan engineers aren't so silly afterall............
