Where else would I get the stuff on my car installed :P:D

Gavin Wood - AutoTech.

I had the Apexi GT intercooler kit fitted, so it was just a basical remove and replace pipes and mount the cooler. When you have things like just the cooler with no piping it obviously becomes more expensive. Then you have things like the Hybrid "kits" that don't fit which take many many more hours to manipulate the pipes to make them fit :)

We got Brutis' piping done at RACE at Capalaba. It only cost around $100 but that was mates rates for 2" black coated mild steel (it's only a brutis!). I'm gathering you need all the pipework made up as well?

Depending on what type of pipework you want to go for and how much you want to spend. Most of the exhaust shops do it don't they? Exotic exhausts were going to be pretty expensive for Brutis' cooler IIRC. But RACE seemed to do a good job. It was cheap and it worked :P

Go and see Ben at "ultimate Performance" in Nerang on the Gold Coast. He is well priced for polished stainless cooler piping. He is about $250 under other workshops i spoke to.

The prices i got for with the cooler fitted so all they had to do was the piping. Fitting the cooler itself is easy as pie. I do suggest if you do it yourself........cut some cardboard the same size as the CORE of your cooler and tape it to it, that way you won't bend any fins during the install.

try the cooler yourself this will save $$$. i was able to fit my cooler and piping myself and i saved hundreds. it was a hybrid kit but it only took about 6-7 hours to fit by myself. it could be done quicker with 2 people.

get that cooler in there before summer time as you notice the difference in summer. :P

yer, ive got zero tools and zero skillz with tools, so im definately after someone to do it all for me;

ill give RACE a call, ta erin;

really chasing places in brissy;

dont particularly want to take a day off work and sit around waiting for the job to be done;

Yes i have a mate who will do it cheap, u just gotta buy the piping and mandrel bends :P

Predator motorsport is about 2min from where i live, dont know much about them but prices seem to be good because their still getting off the ground

Brutis' pipe was 1 3/4" mandrel (with 2" swage(?) onto the throttle body) with all the joiners/o-clamps etc for the 100 bucks...

But I mounted the cooler myself, cut away any metal that needed cutting to run the pipes through etc. Happy with the results fwiw :P

Its gonna cost you a bucket if you want stainless steel piping and get them to do the fitting, regardless of who you goto...

yeah i did the gtr intercooler conversion on my sedan. bought about 5 90 degree bends, 1 180 u bend, about 2 metres of straight stuff and some 3inch to 21/2 joiners, truck radiator hose and some marine radiator hose and about 8 hose clamps.

started at 7 am saturday morning and didnt finish until 10pm sunday night. we worked all night with the welder, dropsaw, grinder, buff, etc, but it was worth it. it looks fantastic, and because of the impul front bar we ran the return pipe in front of the intercooler but along the bottom of front bar. its completely invisible, except for the front mount. and the front pipe now even acts as an instrusion bar. hehehe

if you want i can take some photos with the front bar off.

the doctor said i might have brain damage. what the point of this story? i like stories.

to be honest it was really hard work - you are better paying the extra and getting a kit that fits.

it was two of us, working non stop, from scratch, designing, manufactoring and finishing everything with only 4 hose joins in the whole "kit".

but at least i know its done right and wont be moving.

So you pay like around $600 for a "decent" GTR cooler or just a cooler on it's own.. and then another $350 - $600 in piping.. plus labour and time to get it installed..

Wouldn't it be easier to just go out and buy a kit? Even if it is just a hybrid (curses) one!

    • Sounds good.  I don't 100% understand what your getting at here. When you say, "I keep seeing YouTube videos where people have new paint and primer land on the old clearcoat that isn't even dulled down" do you mean this - there is a panel with factory paint, without any prep work, they paint the entire panel with primer, then colour then clear?  If that's what you mean, sure it will "stick" for a year, 2 years, maybe 3 years? Who knows. But at some stage it will flake off and when it does it's going to come off in huge chunks and look horrific.  Of course read your technical data sheet for your paint, but generally speaking, you can apply primer to a scuffed/prepped clear coat. Generally speaking, I wouldn't do this. I would scuff/prep the clear and then lay colour then clear. Adding the primer to these steps just adds cost and time. It will stick to the clear coat provided it has been appropriately scuffed/prepped first.  When you say, "but the new paint is landing on the old clearcoat" I am imagining someone not masking up the car and just letting overspray go wherever it wants. Surely this isn't what you mean?  So I'll assume the following scenario - there is a small scratch. The person manages to somehow fill the scratch and now has a perfectly flat surface. They then spray colour and clear over this small masked off section of the car. Is this what you mean? If this is the case, yes the new paint will eventually flake off in X number of years time.  The easy solution is to scuff/prep all of the paint that hasn't been masked off in the repair area then lay the paint.  So you want to prep the surface, lay primer, then lay filler, then lay primer, then colour, then clear?  Life seems so much simpler if you prep, fill, primer, colour then clear.  There are very few reasons to go to bare metal. Chasing rust is a good example of why you'd go to bare metal.  A simple dent, there is no way in hell I'm going to bare metal for that repair. I've got enough on my plate without creating extra work for myself lol.
