Gday - I need to protect my baby.

Just wondering what people think are the best reasonably priced (ie. not a $2000 cellular tracking system) alarms are?

Also how good are club locks (if they're good which brand is best)?

The alarm should have-

- ability to be turbo timer compatible (I guess this limits it to 3 points of immobilisation?)

- black wires

- some kind of good RF encryption scheme

- a keyfob that is reasonable in size (preferably tiny)

- ability to arm on and off silently

- ability to be louder than legally allowed

- ability to remotely lock/open my car (central locking already installed)

- ability to monitor all doors, boot, bonnet (may need extra button)

- ability to monitor window breaking

- ability to monitor tilt (tow away protection)

- ability to have some adjustment so I can turn the sensitivity down

- a light that flashes

Oh and it would be cool if it could wind down my windows for me :)

Any other criteria you guys think would be useful/necessary would be greatly appreciated!

On my very first car I had a crappy one installed at strathos for like $350 and it did more than half of that.

Silent arm, reasonable keyfob, tilt sensor (that never worked but hey), 4 point immob, ability to be louder than legal, monitored all windows/doors/boot/bonnet, screamed when battery unplugged, etc

I thought those features were standard on most alarms??

You could have all of that and more...it only takes a few seconds to have your car ****ed with, no alarm I know of can defend against a molotov c0cktail or a paving slab.

Better still get a mongoose immobiliser...even if you've got the button *IT* decides when you can or can't start your car grrr!

I picked up a unit from AUTOBARN and fitted it myself. I didn't get the window lift option, or tilt option - but it had everything else you listed. I think it cost me ~$150.00 The insructions make it a pretty easy job (if you have a test pencil/multimeter). I did not like the tought of having someone else know how my alarm was wired and where all the wires went....

That's cheap DAN00H - I know what you mean about the wiring and knowing where it is.

2BNVS - Thanks I will look into the that model.

Thanks guys - does anyone else have anything else for me to look into ? I'm going to do it this arvo I think.

Well I just got quoted a top-of-line-ish alarm with pressure, tilt sensors and the majority of the stuff I wanted except :

- ability to be louder than legally allowed

- ability to have some adjustment so I can turn the sensitivity down

$450-500 installed. Windows would be a little extra.

Same guy quoted me QT installed with one year for $1700 - I'm tempted to go with that as a peice of mind thing.

how about a tracker ? $990 if you can fit it yourself and $1290 if you want it fitted in , no annual fees . you will know where your car is all the time the minute someone opens the door you will know , you will know if someone started it or if the car is moving , speed , direction and best of all you can immobilise it from any phone at any time .

with an alarm you will not know anything , a siren will go on for 1 minute thats it , cut the siren and its silent .

alarms are old technology soon every car will have a tracker ...

why do you want to have silent arming and disarming?

then you wouldnt be able to tell if its armed without looking at the light on the dash.

When getting in and out of the car without wanting to draw attention to it - getting home late etc. You can tell it's armed by looking at the hazard lights/listening to the central locking lock.

also, my alarm beeps twice when disarmed and then twice more if the alarm has gone off. that way you can check your car out for any damage etc.

I think that's a great idea! Which alarm is that?

Can you explain to me how this works please? Unfortunately I don't drive my car to work so it would be difficult to do anything about it if it went off :(

true true..

does any one have a handbrake lock? Locks the handbrake up and locks into gear. Probably only any good if u could lock it into 5th. Nonetheless a good visual deterant and another couple of seconds they'll need to spend before they get away with your baby.

    • I did not go to GTR Festival. It's quite a long drive and the car wasn't dialed in yet. I also wanted to see how the racing portion went before going. From what I can tell the classes were not heads up, index, or bracket - just whoever has the quickest ET wins. Never heard of that sort of thing before and maybe some people like it but it's not my cup of tea. I don't suspect I'll go if that is how the racing is done. I did get the car out three times and had issues each time. Some were my error - haven't raced the car in over two years - and others were parts. Had trouble getting the clutch to slip correctly and remembering how it was set up in the Haltech. Broke some drivetrain parts as well that couldn't be fixed in a couple days to get back out. Season definitely didn't end the way I wanted but at least the bearings are still fine! Not a fleck of material in the filter. Really hoping next year is the year I can actually test this car properly.
    • find it funny everyone claims different fuel chains, do different things with their fuel blah blah blah. We don't have that many fuel terminals in Australia. The fuel tanker trucks drive into the terminal, fill up, and drive directly to the service station and dump out. The majority of fuel you get, is coming out of the same terminals. The variation is actually at the individual service stations and how good their tanks are, as well as how much turn over they actually have. Older fuel stations, that haven't had their tanks replaced are going to end up with the worst fuel. Also a lot of older stations have shit design, and shit maintenance, and end up with more water absorption into the tank. This is when you then get a bad batch of fuel. Other shit things happen, like tanker drivers have a f**k up, and starting to unload the wrong compartment on their truck into the wrong tank.
