I had my R32 GTR about 1 month and the car had the Trust Water temperature gauge, normally when the car is moving around 60km at city, the temoerature is around 80 - 83. The highest when drive in city is nearlly 93. The highest temperature when I give it a hit, its 97 - 99. Is that all rite? I asked ADVAN Performance, they said for GTR you can go up to 110 -115 if u had the 1.3 kg Cap on it. I bought the nismo one. But not sure about the temperature if its ok or not. They said I can change the water pump or put a Trust electric fan system to cooling down the temperature to 70 - 75. But I am not planning to modfi the car now. But I still worry about the water temperature. Anyone can help?

boiling point of water is 100 degrees!!!
But, under pressure (ie with a 1bar radiator cap), the boiling point is raised considerably. Also raised by addition of anti-freeze. That's really the reason you don't remove the cap when the engine is hot - the pressure release causes the water to instantly boil and convert to steam.

The temperatures you are achieving sound quite normal given the circumstances they are achieved under.

THx for that, u talk about the same things as ADVAN told me b4.

as blind said... boiling point increases under pressure, thats the reason they pressurize the system... also anti-freeze helps too...

I only have standard water gauge, and mine sits a tiny bit under half way all the time..

yeah i have a nasty burn on my leg from about 2 seconds exposure to high pressure coolant line that split when i was checking the oil in my wifes car. Hose split right at the connection to the thermostat (on a foulcan) and the jet of coolant that came out and hit me was definately liquid but it took about 2 seconds to turn into high pressure steam and spray all over the garage wall in the spot that i had just vacated.

trust me that was definately hotter than 100 degrees the burn took about a month to heal

and left me with a nasty red mark on my leg. :D

but back to the question and yeah as people have said with the addition of coolant and with the system being under pressure the temps you are achieving are not unusual

But on my normal water gauge, its always on the half line. is there any difference between R32 GTR and R33 GTR?

My 33 GTR sits on 81 - 84 no matter how hard I drive it... Power FC Commander shows peak temp and it never gets over 84 unless I've stopped for fuel or whatever. When I get back in it's up to around 104 then drops back to 81 in about 30 seconds of driving. I wouldn't think 99 while driving around is a good thing, hows your oil temp when the waters that hot??

Also don't believe the stock gauge too much, mine hardly moves until the water gets over 70 degrees then moves quickly up to half way..

Cheers

U r right, I find out the stock gauge doesnt show very well. Coz once the Geeready gauge goes up to 93, the stock still keep it on the half. I didnt check the oil temp. Coz what happen is when u in traffic like move very slow and stop and move, the water temp will goes up to 90. But once u drive up to 60KM and keep that about 12 sec. the water temp will goes down to 81. The normal temp is 80. That's what I worry about for the normal temp, is that too hot? But it never goes more than 100, the top temp was 98.

I'm no mechanic, but I'd be checking to make sure your radiator fan is working when you are sitting at the lights, it should kick in when the thermostat gets to a certain temp and cool the water down.. It could also be your thermostat is buggered and isn't switching it on...

Other thing is you might want to check that the greddy gauge is not faulty just to count out one possibility...

cheers

Brett

Does anyone know what temp the fan is meant to kick in at? On my power fc, normal driving usually sits around 85 degrees, however after stopping for fuel it can go up to 100 - 105. I dont hear the fan while idling, but when the temp gets hot, when I start driving off you can hear it (the car sounds like a truck).

:)

sounds like my problem Amaru, I asked powerplay today, what they said is to change the thermostat. They also not sure about the normal temp on R32 GTR. The R34 is 75 - 79 for normally. I dont realli know. But it didnt show any bad things once the temp reach 90. Might just give powerplay to check.

Things you can do:

- Get your cooling system pressure tested for leaks.

- Inspect pressure caps for any deterioration, i.e. rubber has ripped, spring now returning etc.

- Check your t-stat if easily accessible

- Ensure you bleed your cooling system

- Adjust your Coolant/Water ratio (More water = more better cooling, more coolant = less likelyhood of boiling over)

- Flush your whole coolant system including engine block

- Inspect Radiator Fins

- Inspect Radiator Fans operations

- Improve Radiator Ducting (block off all air passages around your radiator at the nose cone, this will force ram your air thru your radiator

I have had cooling problems on my car (not a skyline) but cooling systems are very similar...if those don't work then maybe its time to look for an upgrade.

If you upgrade your water pump it will increase flow rate

If you upgrade your fans it will increase airflow through radiator

If you upgrade your radiator you will increase capacity and possible efficiency (assuming you buy the correct one)

Assuming you have looked at all the above, you are getting hot temps during hard runs I would go down the path of getting a larger-more pass radiator imo.

My car has a brand new thermostat in it, I dont think thats the problem. From what I have been told, the temperature is meant to hold around 82 - 85 degrees. Naturally of course, if you stop this is going to go up as theres no airflow through the radiator. However, I am just wondering what temp the fan is meant to kick in at?

I'm not a big fan of the 'anti-boil' in corrosion inhibitor / anti-freeze (water will eat alloy heads without the inhibitor....). It is raising the boiling point of your system, but I'm not interested in running my engine hotter!

As BBQ Chook said, water is actually better at dispersing heat.

I did see some very interesting writings on this topic - it might be in the maintenance section.

    • The hot exhaust light will come on not from just the cat being blocked, but it's just a temp sensor, and it's designed to warn you to not do things like park in long grass.   If you've been pushing the motor a bit, it can cause the light to come on.   Second if the cat is rattling, I'd suspect it's not blocked, but instead falling apart inside.   The easiest "fix" until you can get a cat put back in, is to unbolt your one, bash the rest of the insides out, and then bolt it back in.   For a daily driver/street car, I am in agreeance of put a cat in the car. If it were race car I wouldn't care if it were removed.
    • No worries at all 🫡 I think the most satisfying things to make are the little bits that are just impossible to find or they're no longer manufactured. Generally I always try to replace parts with OEM wherever possible. This little project is also great because it'll never see the light of day, but strengthen these brackets so it's not just relying on the little standard screws in the headlight plastic. As soon as I saw the standard brackets and screws I thought, "well I'm not going to install with just the screws, the plastic tabs will just snap off". It's crazy how expensive everything has become yeah. But I suppose that's supply and demand; granted it's a lot easier to get brand new genuine parts these days which is fantastic 😊, I don't have to get totally reamed at the local Nissan dealer ha ha We sure are lucky we have all these manufacturers making parts these days, a few really great Australian companies too like Platinum Racing Products and Fit Mint Automotive, what a time to be alive ❤️ . I've got my eye on the RB26 head by PRP as mine has a very fine hairline crack, so that'll need to be addressed some time in the future. If you have any requests or odd things to make feel free to let me know and I can have a crack at making replacement parts ✌️
    • Thanks for sharing this, and BTW if your headlights are in good condition they are worth thousands....you might want to consider replacing them with brand new LED ones like this (https://www.nengun.com/78works/full-led-headlights-r32-skyline) and making enough profit to buy a house in Sydney
    • I'm not sure what sort of shops are nearby, but I'd expect any reasonable exhaust shop could put a cat in it that will not restrict the power that engine makes. Otherwise, if you want to remove it, short lengths that replace the cat are readily available online, search for "de-cat pipes" or "test pipes"
    • Howdy friends, So another weird one today, I was looking into replacing some broken clips holding the front grille for the R32 GTR (part number 01553-03831), and noticed the brackets which are supposed to hold the grille in place were also missing 😑. I do recall seeing this issue many years ago, but didn't fix it at the time. A quick look on eBay and I was able to find the genuine brackets, along with all the screws which suited the headlights (part numbers 26042-08U05,26092-08U05). Happy days!....  Once they arrived however there was an extra nut in the packaging which implied that there should also be a bolt or a stud, and sure enough, after a bit of searching I found this thread from 2013, and @Ants clearly shows a stud should be present. Reading around a bit more, it's possible the headlights on my car are the "povo pack" headlights as mentioned by @funkymonkey in this thread way back in 2008. This could explain why the studs are missing on my set of headlights. Looking at the headlight diagram I wasn't able to see a suitable part number for the stud itself. The headlight did indeed have a recess that looked like it would accept a stud, but interestingly no thread or anything obvious how the stud would be affixed to the headlight, I suspect it may have been glued in, press fit, or melted into the plastic at the factory. Another member may be able to clarify if they happen to have a genuine set of N1 headlamps. The only thing we have to work with within the recess is a keyway which likely is there to prevent the stud from rotating within the recess. In any case, back to 3D printing, I put together a model which acts like a pug with a friction fit inside this recess, making use of the keyway so it doesn't rotate while tightening a bolt. Printing in TPU will allow it to slightly swell making a nice snug fit without cracking the part. I've designed the adaptor it to accept an 20 mm M6 bolt (stainless with a cap head in my case), as opposed to the standard M5 stud and I made use of the standard galvanised split washer that came with the genuine brackets from Nissan. Once the bolt and screws were all in place, giving the bracket a gentle shake gave the classic "shaking the car" feeling, very solid, which gives me confidence this is going to be able to hold on much better than the janky solution which seems to have been here for the past decade or so. Overall I'm really pleased with how this turned out and maybe there are more people out there running these headlights without a centre stud at all!
