Hi,

I am picking up my GTR from the engineering place tomorrow >> the dude has done all the work and has said that he will not sing my certificate because of the T78... why start the job when you won't finish it?

Has anyone got any ideas on how to get around this one?

So far I have been told that if I take it to another engineering place they will need to start over again. I already have a bill for $700 for what he has done >> minus the farken certificate which is $400. On top of that I have already booked it in for RWC on Monday and Registration at VIC roads on Tuesday. I need this certificate in the next 3 days...HELP

Unfortunately this is the risk you take with buying a modified car. The number of vicroads authorised engineers (VASS signatories) has dropped dramatically in recent years because of the increasing personal liability they face when signing off on modified vehicles. Not only does Vicroads hold them accountable, and even though they must have public liability insurance, they can STILL be sued in the event that a car they sign off is involved in an accident involving injury/death/property damage. Quite literally everything they own is at risk. It's called 'duty of care'.

What's the answer in your case ??....unless you can find another engineer (I'd say unlikely), then your only option is to buy (borrow ??) a set of stock turbo's etc and bolt them on....

[Edit: it's more than likely the engineer isn't 'employed' by the compliancer but is 'called in' as required after the compliancer is finished his work. The engineer probably runs his own company which is entirely separate to the compliancer]

I wouldn't mind hearing who did your compliance as well. PM if you can't say... I've heard that generally, large high mount turbo's are passed without a problem., but this obviously isn't the case. Depending on the level of mods.. it could be a pain to put a stock turbo on for a engineers, and would no doubt be more $$

You should be able to find someone that can pass it.

is this an 89 GTR?? i dont see why there should be a problem with the turbo in that case.. i thought DOTARS would allow any aftermarket turbo.

Actually has nothing to do with DOTARS. In this case the engineer is certifying to Vicroads that the car meets its requirements, including but not limited to ADR's. The car will also be inspected by VicRoads when getting reg/plates. It's possible Vicroads could decide it doesn't like the turbo at that time (even with the engineers signed certificate), reject the reg application and ask the engineer for a 'please explain'. He COULD lose his license.

I actually had something like this happen....I did an engine conversion and had it all inspected and approved by an engineer, but Vicroads demanded that I have the car inspected by their own engineers and they found some things they didn't like. In the end it worked out, but I know that the engineer got a 'friendly reminder' letter from Vicroads about his responsibilities.....

Ignoring the silly name calling, you don't seem to understand how it works....the engineer would only have seen the car once - AFTER the compliance work was done. When a car is brought in for compliance, the necessary work is performed and then the engineer is called in to certify that it has been done, and done to the correct standards. So in this case the engineer would have only seen the turbo when he first saw the car after the compliance work was done, and that's when he got cold feet. These guys aren't stupid, they've worked in the auto industry for many years and usually know exactly what they're looking at.

As understand its not the turbo itself, its the emmisions not being the same levels as a twin set up... this making it a EPA issue? Please correct me if I'm wrong. I would have not been able to import it under DOTARS if they had an issue with the T78 (fark it's BIG :rofl:)

Do you think I would be able to remove Turbo all together and run it as NA get certificate and the just bolt it back on again. What a hassel but it may work?

Mate, it will barely run with out the turbo hooked up, and you'ld have to somehow attach the two airflow meters to the intake. Plus it would be running so poorly it would probably be making more emissions, than with the turbo on.

BTW, I'd like you hear about your experience with kiwi. ie. was there any car damage? anything stolen?

Whether emissions or power, it's all still related to the turbo and it's obvious it's not original. Under Vicroads rules your car requires a separate engineers certificate for the turbo. The compliance certificate your trying to get only certifies that the car meets basic ADR's and any separate Vicroads issues (usually minor local requirements), any other mods require separate certification and that's why the engineer is baulking.

Turning it into an NA is not really an option - there were no NA RB26's from the factory so just doing it would be a major problem.

The first thing you should do is find out from the engineer EXACTLY what it is he needs changed to satisfy his requirements and go from there.

Not sure if it was KIWI or TOLL but I was missing my nizmo gear nob and TOMEI style horn from the steering wheele.

Nothing to cry about really... as you can see I have bigger problems at the moment.

I will be trying this when i get my t88 powered 89 GTR complied and certified by the broker in Syd when it arrives in 3 weeks and then get my registration in QLD?

Problem with this is that the QLD/NSW engineer won't be a recognised VASS signatory. It's almost certain that Vicroads would want to undertake their own inspection and that's where the same problem could resurface (ie Vicroads could demand another engineering inspection to cover the mods).

On top of that there's the cost of shipping the car interstate (twice) which is probably going to be $600+ anyway.

Good ideas (QLD or SYD) but CNBF at all and I don't have an endless budget to transport car interstate and back + I want my GTR registered by Tuesday... It's been farken 4 months since I paid for the thing and I sold my other car a few months ago (I hate Public Transport)

I have had an offer in the Vic section for some standard Turbos but thats also Farked because it a huge job plus I need a few bits for the conversion...also could not be farked but it's the best offer so far....

I'm going to go have another cry now

Yeah, I think unfortunately the temporary switch to stock turbos/manifolds is your only viable option. You are right though, it's not going to be cheap. So sorry to hear that you've hit this barrier mate. :D

One way you could get around it is, send it up to NSW and get it engineered then registered there. Ship it back down to Victoria then transfer rego that way. You will probably have to get it inspected by Vicroads but I doubt it they will cane you as hard as a VASS signatory.

One funny thing though is, when my brother's car was engineered, the engineer inspected the car first before the workshop lifted a spanner on the damn thing. The guy gone thru the car thoroughly, marked down whatever he wants to rectify then he went away preparing the report. Once the workshop have done their stuff, the engineer came in with the prepared report then inspect it - if he's happy he will hand the report over if not, wait till he's happy. Sorry couldn't contribute more than just this..hope your VASS will come thru with your car at the end.

No go with the pick up tonight... been advised not pick it up with no signature.

Will try tomorrow after some discussion with ppl's involved.

Now it's Friday and I'm going to get well and truly F**KED UP at the pub and hopefully it will make me feel a bit better... Hope ya'll have a good weekend.

EDIT: PS >> I don't drive as I have no Farking car... so it's all good for me. Don't drink and drive. :)

any engineer worth (in NSW)his salt wouldnt touch a modified engine like that without an emmisons test (and there is no way in the world that engine would pass)

and if you did find a dodgy engineer to sign it off in nsw the paper is pretty much worthless once you get pulled over

NSW is doing a major shake up of the RTA aprroved engineers so they have mostly turned anal and there will be half the amount that are around right now in the comming months
