Knowing the inaccuracy of most media stories there may well be more to the story, but if racing was involved then you have to be prepared for the consequences

Well why are they tring to sort out the reasons they were travelling together if they have the other guy right there

Not everyone dies in a car whilst breaking the law.

Alot more people die in actuall accidents where there was nothing they could do, regardless of what car they drive. A car doesnt drive itself, its driven.

The media can bag on imports all they want, but i request that they get the figures of how many young people have died in commodores/fords/non imports first

Definately condolences to those who died and their families.

Whether or not it was drag racing, two cars like these, side by side, driven by teenagers, is enough for today tonight to label as a drag with stupid young drivers. And it's pushed further by the fact that it was on a street notorious for drags.

Whichever way you look at it, everyone loses.

ten news are saying it was "possibly caused by street racing"

then the policeman was quoted to say "we're not stupid, we know when people are drag racing, usually" .....idiot.

the car was a black series I 33 with blitz painted on the FMIC, car seems to have toppled and smashed on the passenger left side door, i'm guessing the reason why the rear passengers died, car was in VERY bad condition.

also, the civic drivers were friends of the skyline drivers

Why mention the make of the Nissan and not the Honda? I'm pretty sure Ten Late News did the same thing, i heard them say Nissan Skyline complete with a police officers opinion on high performance cars and inexperienced driver but i don't think the Honda rated much of a mention? True it was the Skyline that crashed but still...

My condolences to the family of those involved. If they were having a race, well it's a shame but that's what happens when you go beyond your limits on public roads. You've got to face the consequences.

It's not "imports" that they are bagging.

It's high powered vehicles with inexperienced drivers.

had it been a p-plater commodore i think the response would have been similar. theyre beating the p-platers gong, not import drivers so much imo.

i'd say it has something to do with commodores and the like being locally released cars.

whereas imports are dangerous high powered are...imports...which can be outlawed if the government was that harsh.

the media gives it to commodore drivers too, it just seems a lot of recent crashes have been in imports.

Sorry, Steve. If you read the article at the top of this thread I am amazed you can suggest it is beating up on import drivers. It mentions the cars involved in a factual manner, without any prejudiced adjectives. The library picture shows a Commodore racing and the cop refers to "the two vehicles".

As Newkleer, and others have said, this particular report is not bashing import drivers, it is highlighting risk taking by young men in cars - any cars! The Age article quotes recent statistics of road fatalities being dominated by young men. What they don't say is that it has always been the case, since Adam first found the gas pedal. Did you know that in a survey in Europe about drivers attitudes to other drivers and perceptions of their own abilities, most men under 35 thought that the average driver was really poor and most of them thought they were above average. The really interesting one though was that, of the drivers under 25, 75% of them thought that they were above average for their age group - never mind everyone else!

My point is that young men have been taking risks for ever and will continue to do so, no matter what media, politicians, girlfriends, Mums or anyone else says. Where society rightfully gets involved is where their risk taking affects others. I wouldn't knock proposals for compulsory defensive driving courses - any increase in driving tuition is bound to be of benefit. Such proposals are a damn sight better than poorly structured and ill-balanced anti-hoon laws.

Moan and groan all you like, but unless you take part in the public debate with the media, you not going to change anything! This forum and associated clubs have a place in arguing the case for us all to continue to enjoy the cars we love, by fostering responsible driving on the roads and keeping the racing to the track. Tell that to the media. Tell them that this forum is the 4th most visited site in Australia and tell them that we ARE fostering the right attitude. If you keep telling them, the message will get through. If you simply indulge in paranoia, Commodore-bashing and whinging into your beer about the media, then how are they to know any better.

Personally, I find it very difficult to read or watch any of the media reports on driving and accidents these days. They treat us all like ignorant morons trying to have us believe that speed and speed and of course speed kill. There is no foolproof answer, until cars are banned or fully automated there is no way that you can stop "accidents" happening. To me the only logical answer is driver training. No written test will teach you how to drive and being an expert reverse parker or putting your indicator on for seven "clicks" before the corner won't help much either. Education will teach people to respect their lives, respect their cars and give them some hope of getting out of or not creating dangerous situations.

But, we are all being brainwashed to accept "safety cameras" and no tolerance speed limits and the huge revenues that are generated as a consequence. Where does the money go? Why not make advanced driving courses available to all new drivers with the millions generated? Do the governments in this country really care who dies or is it just a convenient way of pulling the wool over our eyes and collecting ever more? You can't make dying illegal, its not something you can legislate against. You can't outlaw car accidents because the very nature of an accident is that its an unpredictable and uncontrollable event. Fining people for going 3kph over the speed limit wont save lives!!!!! Driver education and changing fundamentally how a young person approaches driving will and I dont think that can be argued against.

I get so angry when thinking about this topic. I feel like we are all being ripped off by the morons we vote into government.
