Hi guys,

just thought i'd introduce myself here!

I just bought a R32 GTS-t Skyline and am impatiently waiting for it to to arrive from Japan.

In the mean time i'm arranging for all the bits and pieces i'll need to get the thing registered.

Firstly,

It has a APEXi BOV, which probably won't pass becuase it doesn't plumb back

pic here

What is the best thing to do about this, i've been searching the forums and have found mixed responses?

My thoughts are to simply take it off when i go for the vicroads inspection, plug up the vacuum line and get the test done without a BOV at all. This isn't likely to do any harm to the engine, coz i'll put it back on straight after the inspection (ssssh!). I can't imagine it doing too much damage as i used to drive a GSR cordia which never came with a stock bov anyway (and was running higher boost that the skyline im buying)

The alternative is to replace it with a stock bov, or just turn it off, and leave it there, hoping they don't notice. I've been told that the EPA has the main issues with atmo venting BOVs and that vicroads don't really care that much about emissions.

I know it's been discussed before, but there are too many differing opinions, what sort of luck have you guys had with vicroads??

Thanks!

go stocker, won't have a problem at all. And really, don't need anything more than a stock BOV unless you are running big HP.

i'm sure you can borrow one for the day from some friendly R32 vic driver

No current upgrade plans at the moment, I gonna be pretty broke for a while so a new turbo isn't high on the list. Luckily the car has quite a few of the basic mods already done to it (exhaust, pod filter, BOV, better suspension, LSD - not sure if stock LSD or upgraded one).

I probably will get a stock BOV at some point down the track. The car will be arriving mid December and i'm going to be in a rush to comply & register it so I can take the car when I go away early January.

I don't imagine the stock one will be too difficult to install. Where exactly on the intake does the stock one plumb back to?

have you thought of putting a GFB stealth fx bov in, for the r32's i think its the universal stealth fx, u are able to adjust the amount of flow with a flick of the wrist there bout 450 or something around that price, thats what i will be getting if they are any good.

...Luckily the car has quite a few of the basic mods already done to it (exhaust, pod filter, BOV, better suspension, LSD - not sure if stock LSD or upgraded one).

ummm, i thought when an import came into the country, aftermarket Mods on the car - more specifically in this instance the Exhaust - has to be destoyed...

I enquired 'bout a 34 that was coming in, and the importer said that it had an aftermarket zorst but said it was going to be destroyed on arrival and a stocker fitted due to regulations/emmision control..etc..

This was the case with the zorst, pod filters should be ok (mine did come with a HKS mushrom fitted and got complied) but other things like BOVs, bleeders et al i have no idea bout.

The importer I spoke to (3years ago) who is now out of business used to bring cars in fully kitted up and then return them back to stock and sell the parts..

As if they destroy the parts. Its just a way for them to make money by telling you that.

it's a 1989 R32. you can bring in cars 15 years or older with no restriction. Mods are ok. If you import under SEVS (for cars younger than 15 years), then the car must be stock - ie no mods

anyway,

Im not after an aftermarket BOV, the car has a perfectly good one - it just doesn't plumb back and hence isn't legal.

The question is - if i removed the BOV all-together - just for the vicroads inspection - then will it be ok?

My plan is to take it off for the inspection, and then put it back on once the car has past the inspection (and hence suffer the consequences of driving it with an illegal mod - i won't drive it on public roads of course ;-) ).

Im just pondering if I should get a stock one to replace it, or if i should just go without. I know the EPA would require it to have a BOV because it came stock with one, but it's just a Vicroads inspection, and i doubt they would know or care.

Unless you go to Burwood Vicroads, then it shouldnt be a problem. My car was passed with a big top mount turbo at South Caulfield Vicroads. It even had miss matched rims and the guy out his hand on the turbo to see the engine number. if they say anything about the bov then its just plain bad luck.

    • Not R7R. Meant to type R&R, obviously enough.
    • Bugger "making it look stock". I put one conventional internally fused Hella relay behind each globe. I just pulled the plugs off the back of the globes and built new loom segments with male and female plug parts to match up to the original loom and the globe, and used the original power wires to each globe coming from the switch through the original loom plug to trigger the relays. Ran a big fat (also separately fused) power wire across the front of the car to feed all the relays. It's as ugly as f**k, but it is wedged down between the headlight and battery on the RHS and the airbox and headlight on the LHS, and no-one ever looks in my engine bay, and on the odd occasion that they do I simply give no f**ks for what they think. Fully reversible - not that you'd ever want to. For f**k's sake. It's a Skyline. They made million of the bloody things. We've been crashing them into roadside furniture for 30 years now. There is a negative side effect to putting relays on the headlights. The coil current is too little to properly clean the contacts in the switches and they get blacked up and you have to open them up every couple of years and clean them manually. I have 25 years of experience on this point.
    • I was poking through the R34 wiring diagrams vs R33 and noticed that the R34 has proper headlight relays while the R33 is like the R32 and sends full headlight power through the headlight switch. I'm not afraid of wiring but I really would like to do this in a way that looks OEM (clipping into open positions on the OEM relay box) and also unlike the factory wiring which interlocks the high beam and low beam on the halogen series 1 GTR headlights I want to make it such that turning on the high beams keeps the low beams on as well. Any advice on how to locate the specific connectors + crimp terminals + relays I need? I was thinking one NO relay for low beams and another for combined high + low running off the factory high beam headlight connector. I don't really want to splice into a crusty old probably discontinued factory harness so fully reversible is my goal here.
    • Pretty sure they run the same engine as the Q50 hybrid which specifies 95 RON.  I ran 98 in mine for a while, but it made no difference in performance or economy, so I have been using 95 for the last few years.  I have never hit 6.0L/100km, but have returned mid to high 6 on the highway.  Being a hybrid, fuel economy is a lot more dependant on how you drive it.  At 110km/h, mine never goes into EV mode on the highway, so returns closer to 7.5L/100. urban driving can return low 8s if you are careful or over 10 if you are a bit more enthusiastic on the throttle.
    • About a quarter of what you want to do. It's only R7R, not R&dismantle&replaceparts&reassemble&R. ? It is stock. I already told you, you will NOT have broken those. It's f**king 4th gear for Christ's sake. You just chipped the teeth off.
