i use redline mt 90 gear oil.... no smell and works very well......

could be clutch smell as above post...

could be the rubber boot around the gear shift split.. this will weap oil onto the top of the gearbox and smell a bit..

hope this helps...

jezzerrr, had the same problem with my 33 GTR when I first bought it. I would smell gearbox oil fumes whilst driving. The problem was a split in the small seal below my gear stick, that was allowing fumes to leak into the cabin. I got a mechanic to change it - part was 25 bucks (From nissan) and labour was 50. They accessed the seal by removing the gear stick boot. Apparently there are two seals, a larger one and a smaller one. The smaller one was split.

Hope this helps.

Omg... you spent $50 just to get someone to change a rubber boot?

Dude, next time just pull it apart yourself. 4 screws under the vinyl selector cover removes the big boot, then the one that is nomally cracked is the smaller one which just slides onto the gearbox.

took me 3-4 mins max.

You used automatic transmission fluid in a manual box? Is atf not too thick?

The ATF is used in the Transfer case on the GTR box (at the rear of the box) The gearstick enters this part of the box, and it is quite smelly if there is a leak.

The front of the box is for the gears, and will use a manual gear oil (redline is good)

If you filled them around the wrong way, or used one oil for the whole box.. it would need to be flushed.

And $50 to replace the inner boot.. bit steep.
