How Strict Are Victorian Police On Powerful Vehicles Particulary The Skyline

So are they strict at all when coming to power to weight ratio, capacity to weight ratio, noise violations, because i am looking at getting a r32 gts-t but concerned about the police.

Whats your view guys.

duh, read all the other threads about everyone whinging that the cops are crackign down on them because they drive R33 GTSt's while on P Plates.

A stock R32 GTSt straight out of the factory will not go over the power to weight ratio... however, we all know you're not gonna leave it stock (not for long) and the cops will know that too. Just don't attract attention to yourself, and you'll be fine. I know guys who've driven Soarer TT's and Supra TT's on their P's and never been pulled over.

So if i were to install an exhaust system into the skyline and i was caught crusing round, to what extent would they go too to check the power of the car? Do they dyno it or do they just give you a ticket on the spot. Once being caught does the car become impounded or does the exhaust have to be taken out and replaced with the stock one? So what about just a tip does that still add performance, but what about noise aswell does it still have the same rumbling noise?

its not that bad... they either give you a minor defect, major defect and an EPA notice...

EPA is stuff like too noisy, bad emissions etc.

minor defect is stuff like blad tyres etc

major defect is like driving with a T-Wing so wide and sharp that it could lob pedestrian heads off if you got too close to the kerb.

Your car gets impounded if you get caught on a speed gun doing 158 in a 50 zone while in an illegal street race (don't ask).

Police can issue you defects at their discression, as theoretically they know better than you do. For example a police officer tried to issue me a ticket for having an oversized intercooler (which was in fact my air con radiator)... he ended up giving me a driving without a license fine of $50 after I informed him it was a non turbo... but you get that. Living in Glen Waverly with officer Petit running around dosen't help either

if you get done, make sure they write down exactly what the defect is for, not just "driving an unroadworthy vehicle".

Most police don't know sh1t so if you get done for something you know is legal, make sure they write it down on the ticket, then go to your local police station and file a complaint. get them to look at the car and make a record of it.

Eg. if you have 18inch rims on a skyline (which is legal) and they defect you for that reason. Make sure they write "rims too big (18 inch)" on the ticket rather than just "rims too big".

It is hard to argue the case, the officer could say you had 19 inch rims and u must have changed them to 18 inch in the mean time. If you had the original defect notice/fine and then a police report less than an hour later, then you have a good foot to stand on.

18 inch rims are definately illegal on R32s, not sure about other models. You are only allowed to increase diameter and width my 1 inch from the standard rims. It says so on the vic roads website.

As long as ur sensible and dont go driving around the city or dandenong or wherever every friday/saturday night, you wont have a problem with the police, except for maybe that cop that everyone hates.

the definition of a 'high powred vehicle' is based on the STOCK power at the flywheel and STOCK tare weight as quoted on your rego sticker and the factory power figures

so modding a car may change its legality from an EPA or Roadworthy point of view, but it doesn't change whether or not a car is deemed 'high powered' for P platers. this means a 300rwkw and roadworthy R32GTSt is fine for a P plater, but an R32GTR running airflow and exhaust restrictors so its makes 50awkw still won't be legal for you

You are safe with an R32GTSt... one of the main reasons i bought one when i was on my P's

Are u 100% sure about mods not affecting the power to ratio limit on your p's? Cos i thought that if you got mods for your car for a gts-t r32 you would go over the limit and that then would be classified as a high powered vehicle. If what u say is true then the exhaust isn't a problem at all cos i dont care bout noise, I was just worried about the high powered thing, cos what they are doing now is if you r caught with a high powered vehicle (stock) the police take the car off you and sell them.

As for Skylinerz, well dude... I would be dotting my i's and crossing my t's with every single rule I could follow. Keep your car as legal as possible (print out the link above and learn the rules about mods).

An R32 GTS-t is VERY cool car to have and sounds awesome, even with a legal exhaust, it looks cool even at legal ride height, it goes well even with just a few mods. 18yos these days are so lucky to be able to have cars like this as an affordable option. Be thankful and careful. There is no real reason to have an illegal car and remember that the cheapest speeding fine is more expensive than the drags at Calder or a trackday at Sandown and I know which one I would prefer.

haven't read through the whole thread but judging by the title here's my experiences:

twin turbo supra:

- 3 defect notices including 2 major and 1 minor

- required to furnish engineers certificate

- 3 power to weight fines

- full mcleod epa

(all this within two months of owning the vehicle)

r32 gts-t skyline:

- no defects

- no power to weight fines

- no epa notices

- 5+ police pullovers

(i have been driving this car for 2 years)

i am on my p's and live 5 minutes around the corner from knox. im just stating the facts and accept the fact that i am willingly driving a car that im not meant to. to the best of my knowledge i am allowed to drive the r32, but not the supra based on the factory specs.

they are correct. my skyline is fairly modded, enough to say it would be over the limit, but i have no police trouble because they look at the factory specs.

my supra on the other hand is lightly modded, only with filter, exhaust and boost controller, so with or without mods, im game over.

i see u live in glenny, close to knox. if u do decide to get a hipo car, dont come down this way. no matter how nicely u drive or how polite u are u will get pulled over here.

1. driving 60kmph on stud rd. got done.

2. reversed out of driveway, went down the street, 10 houses from mine, cold engine doing about 10-15kmph. got done.

Done.. I am wrong, we both are actually, legally you can have any diameter wheel on a car as long as the overall diameter of the wheel and tyre is no more than 15mm different to the stock diameter.

As far as width of wheels, i was right, 25mm wider than widest stock wheel.

Yep... the rules are a bit weird. But good to know them.

If you flash that printout under a police officer's nose they will have trouble arguing.

everyone should just have all the printouts in their cars, itll show that you know more about the rules than the cops and that your car is *probably* roadworthy

You used to be able to get copies on yellow paper from VicRoads.

It is much better if it looks more "official", but I am not sure if they do it any more.

that seems like a good idea, if your car really is roadworthy then printout any regulations the cops might pick at and if they secondguess your car then show em and they wont be a dispute.

yeah i've read the vicroads link before, I must have been confused between the width of the wheel and the diameter.

I was just using that as an example though.

Be warned about printing out regulations etc, if the cop is just going to give you a slap on the wrist and is happy to overlook a few things, don't wave "the book" in his face coz he'll think you're a smartass and just try and find more stuff to defect you on

one thing about the p/w ratio, there is a coresponding capacity to weight ratio that your not allowed to exceed.

My mate got pulled over by mr p for speeding and he was driving his bt1 vp como 5.0ltre, which is illegal for p platers. But all he got done for was speeding. Now i dont know whether this was just uneducation on mr P's behalve or what it could be. But this same officer has also fined many people for being over the power/weight limit in sr20det powered cars (use ur imagination )
