How Strict Are Victorian Police On Powerful Vehicles Particulary The Skyline

Recommended Posts

I'm 25 (no P plater) and looking at getting an R32GTR or a different Skyline that's a little cruisier as a daily driver and I'm kinda mortified at the idea of being pulled over all the time and the mere prospect that I can be defected at the cop's discretion. I don't drive like a hoon, but I do look like a bit of a thug (shaved head) and the fact I'd use the car for work purposes (leased most likely) -- I dunno if I can afford to have too much time on the road or chasing up fines for coppers who are too stupid to know their shit.

This is all a little frightening. Is it only the P platers who have this kind of harassment or is it anyone driving an import or any type?

hey guys, i'm in the same situation...looking at an R33 GTS-T. i know it's illegal. i'm looking for a way around it. does anyone know how hard it is to get exemption eg. high powered vechile certificate. like can i just move out for a month and claim it's the only available car i can drive and get one then? also if you put a 2 stage boost controler and set one to 0 could u claim it's there to restrict the boost and therefore make the car N/A??? would that work. could u get a mechanic certificate to proove it or something... i'm just looking at a way to get around it. any ideas would be great because i think now since that dickhead crashed they will be much more strict...seen the new rego's???

To all the people who are wanting to use ignorance as an excuse, it's a lovely idea, but it doesn't work that way.

When you get your licence, you are made aware of the fact that to p2w restriction is enforced in Vic.

It is YOUR responsibility to buy a car which is legal to drive under the p2w restrictions.

You can't just say "i didn't know".

The same applies with everything.... ignorance is no excuse.

Road use is a privilege, not a right, and as such, it's up to each individual to seek out any information that is applicable.

The same applies to any modifications you do to your car.

Before you do ANYTHING to it, it is up to YOU to find out the legalities of what you plan to do. The reason that people get defected for these things, is because some modifications can be dangerous.... to the driver, to the passengers and to other road users.

Personally I don't have a problem with p2w, i was driving a high powered car on my P's (a million years ago) but the car was extremely heavy (read tank), and the weight of the car made it OK for me to drive...... HOWEVER....... a new driver, with a high powered vehicle, is just a recipe for disaster.... especially when a few mates are in the car and you want to show everyone how good your driving skills are, or how fast your car can go.

getrippedoff yes there are exemptions.

If the car is the only one registered at your home address, then you can apply for an exemption.

Well...... which dickhead would that be?

There's a new dickhead every week.

I don't know how often you watch or read the news, but young people in high powered cars are still dying on the roads every day. (and killing others while they're at it) This is why there is a p2w restriction in the first place.

However, the majority of new drivers tend to think their driving skills are superior, and that the "P" plate stands for "professional".

There's a lot of things about driving on the road that can only be learned with time and experience.

i don't think i have superior driving skills, no more or less skilled than the normal road user

i don't think i'm a 'professional'

i do think my 'p' plates stand for 'probationary'

your points bout p2w, vic roads, etc are very valid. But please don't stereotype, it's not beneficial in anyway.

yes i have an illegal car, but i want to race (on a track) and if i waited any longer for a R34, i would have been forking out an extra $5K - 6k. So i imported, saved money, and fully except the consequences of driving my car on the last 5-6 months of my P's.

cheers.

I'm not stereo-typing, I'm speaking from experience.

Note the word "majority" not "all"

[edit]

And if you fall into that category, of course you're going to take offence, simply because you don't want to be pegged into that stereo-type.

I can understand that.

But you just admitted to the fact that you put yourself above the law, so that kind of proves my point.

:)

When you say you fully accept the consequences does that include the fact your insurance would probably be invalid based on the fact you knowingly broke that law?

i fully agree with everything u are saying...i think there are way to many P platers who think they are racecar drivers with unlimited skill, fact is u are still learning on ur P's and u can't change that, so suck it up and stop trying to proove that ur better than others who've been there and done it, and yes they were learning on their P's aswell, and when i get mine i will be learning on mine aswell. it's experience and u can't just have it naturally. u need the situations to learn from. my aim is to have the car as a daily-driver, i don't mind minimal or no boost for a while (maybe a year or 2 till i gain some more experience), but i want the turbo for the track or any drifting i mite try. that's my main reason.

can i move out for like a month or something and claim it's the only car availabe..any easy ways or ideas on how to get the high powered certificate?
