mac30
Hi, Just wondering if anyone knows a type of bov that makes the fluttering sound. Hate to describe sounds but its not the PSHH sound but more a continuous sound. Something like Fuu...Fuu....Fuuu.... or a bit more high pitch noise and also continuous. There are a few skylines in Syd west that sounds like that. If u own one pls tell me the type of bov ur using. Thanks in advance Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/5381-bov-noise/ Share on other sites
JimX
I think that's more to do with the size of the turbo than the BOV, I think it's a sign that the air is not flowing smoothly and will wear out the turbo faster than usual. Either way, I've heard a few different types of bovs do it. Mine does it, but when I heard a sample of it played on a website, it didn't have the fluttering sound. I've got a GReddy Type R bov, and a T04 turbo. It doesn't do it everytime either, if I'm revving the engine hard and do a quick change it doesn't seem to get time to make the fluttering sound. mac30
Thanks for the reply. My current setup is still pretty standard ie with standard turbo. So would this bov be just the pshh sound. How easy is it to fit, does it need any adaptors? Am getting a frount mount in bout a week, wats the best location for it? Cheers Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/5381-bov-noise/#findComment-82145 Share on other sites
hitnrun
You might want to do a search on the site for more info, but basically the noise you're hearing is the sound of the turbo "chopping" the air as it bounces back off the throttle body. Usually not a good thing. If your BOV is tuned properly, it should vent the pressure rather than let it flow back through the turbo Cheers, Tim Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/5381-bov-noise/#findComment-82157 Share on other sites
riggaP
No BOV makes that fluttering noise. It was covered in this thread: http://forums.skylinesaustralia.com/showth...=&threadid=2105 Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/5381-bov-noise/#findComment-82160 Share on other sites
mac30
Sounds like its more to do with setup then bov. I have heard myself that it does harm turbo and its more to do with wastegate then anything else from a mechanic. My final question is the sound still achievable with HKS SS bov with all the relevant setup?? A31_Cefiro
I think the sound you are after is an external wastegate venting to atmosphere sound. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/5381-bov-noise/#findComment-82204 Share on other sites
mac30
Has that got a more high pitched continuous sound u thing? Heres a video.. you can hear the flutter at the end. Video- about 200k Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/5381-bov-noise/#findComment-82231 Share on other sites

Mr Squiggle
Mac 30! My BOV makes that sound! I call it the rattle snake. Mine is HKS BOV. Older school type I'm lead to believe. Sounds really cool and scares the hell out of pedestrians...... happy blowing off!!! :shake: Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/5381-bov-noise/#findComment-82264 Share on other sites

A31_Cefiro
Have a listen to the Supra's external Type R wastegate sound file located here: http://www.usual-r-suspex.com/usual_suspex.htm It's about 3/4 of the way down the page, under the photos. A31_Cefiro
That's because the Calais engine was a Nissan and the Supra is Toyota powered *chuckle* Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/5381-bov-noise/#findComment-82297 Share on other sites
mac30
One last question guys..... After reading ur comments should I do a straight swap for Greedy type R bov for my HKS SS bov ? Or sell it for cash n get different bov altogether? Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/5381-bov-noise/#findComment-82417 Share on other sites
A31_Cefiro
Choose the BOV you like the sound of best. It's your personal choice when it comes to sound. If your talking technical merits of each BOV then I have no opinion or knowledge on either BOV... mac30
Thanks alot guys, think I might install my HKS SS bov n hopefully get the fluttering noise. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/5381-bov-noise/#findComment-82493 Share on other sites
NIZ30
The HKS is the one you are talking about. Like all bov's it makes slightly different sounds depending on the boost at the gear change. But the HKS makes an unusual kind of whistling sounds rather than the normal venting of air sound from most bov's.
