Hi All,

My cooler piping keeps on blowing off, and its great fun everytime cuz u get to pull over and get ur hands filthy putting it back on again, especially when its dark and ur on the side of the freeway with cars coming past at 100km/h almost swiping ur arse off while ur busy under the bonnet trying to the the pipes clamped up again!

Anyone know where i can get some hardcore hose clamps from? I got the standard hose clamps but since i started running some boost they always pop off. Had a look at autobarn and they didnt have shit ( i wasn't really expecting them to have what i needed anyway )

Cheers

Billy.

Do ur pipes have lips on the end of them?

If not, then i suggest it might be worth going to a welder and for them to weld little beads on the ends of ur pipe in order for the clamp not to slip off that easy.

Than again stronger clamps might do the trick too :)

Yeah those clamps look a lot more robust than the bodgy standard hose clamps i have at the moment. I tried a few hardware places and couldn't find any, i guess i'll check somewhere like ENZED and see if they stock them, i believe they deal just with hoses/connections etc. Does anyone know where i can get some of these in melbourne?

Thanks

I like these ones, I get them from GCG:cheers:

and get some silicon hoses at the same time.

BTW, I was never too worried about a cooler pipe popping off....until I saw Skylinegeoff's car catch fire due to the amount of fuel coming out a hot exhaust...check out his avatar!

How does a cooler pipe popping off make your car catch fire ? it dosn't have anything to do with the flames comming out the exhaust ?

Well....say the turbo is sucking 1 bar of boosted air (+the regular 1 bar air) thru the AFM, and blowing it out the open cooler pipe. Then the cooler inlet pipe sucks in the regular 1 bar air.

The ECU sees 2 bar of air coming into the engine even though only 1 bar actually makes it. It then puts in at least twice as much fuel as it needs.

As a result the engine runs (if it runs at all) super rich....heaps of fuel gets dumped down hot exhaust. In this case, the exhaust was hot enough to light the fuel in a 2 foot flame :D

Lucky he had a fire extinguisher in the car or it would have been pretty ugly.

Ok,

My thoughts were if your running an AFM meter and you blow a cooler pipe, the turbo will still be pumping 1bar, but the open cooler pipe will be trying to suck in standard air atmosphere pressure which will make your car to, pretty much stall instantly. The flame will be caused by the low amount of air intake in the cylinders, leaving excess fuel to hit the hot turbo and ignite. I don't think it would make the ecu put twice as much fuel as your car would be off by then..

I get mine similar to SK's pix from Purple Pig in McIntyre Rd Sunshine I think - about $8 each.

Also I have put three equally spaced dimples in the end of the pipes about a centimetre in from end with center punch from the inside to give the hoses something to be gripped by the clamps.

    • I refreshed the OEM injectors with the kit and connected it up. It now ideals okay even with the IACV removed. Driving still has the same cutoff issue like the 550cc injectors so the issue is somewhere else. I bought FPG's Fuel Pump Hanger. I will be installing it next, but it is not as straightforward as I thought it was with my limited wiring knowledge and no instruction on the specific model I purchased (FPG-089). I also got the incorrect billet clamp as I could not find info on the OEM sizing.
    • Stop looking at the garage floor, and turn the radio up a bit louder if there's any strange noises...
    • No. Turbo shuffle and surge/flutter are not the same thing. Specifically, on a GTR, turbo shuffle has a definite meaning. On a GTR, the twin turbos are assumed to be the same thing and to operate the same way, exactly. In reality, they do not. Their exhaust sides are fed and exhaust a little differently, to each other. Their inlet sides are fed and exhausted a little differently, to each other. Consequently, when they are "working" they are often at slightly different points on the compressor map compared to each other. What this means, particularly when coming on boost, is that one of them will spool up and start producing extra flow compared to the other, which will put back pressure on that other compressor, which will push the operating point on that other compressor up (vertically). This will generally result in it bumping up against the surge line on the map, but even if it doesn't, it upsets the compressor and you get this surging shuffle back and forth between them That is "turbo shuffle" on a GTR. It is related to other flutter effects heard on other turbo systems, but it is a particular feature of the somewhat crappy outlet piping arrangement on RB26s. There are plenty of mods that have been attempted with varying levels of success. People have ground out and/or welded more material into the twin turbo pipe to try to prevent it. Extending the divider inside it works, removing material doesn't. There are aftermarket replacement twin turbo pipes available, and these exist pretty mush purely because of this shuffle problem.
    • You can temporarily* use lock collars to keep it in place until you can do the bushes, back the nuts off, slide them in, snug back up. *temporarily is often for ever
    • Thanks for the quick reply. To be clear, when you say turbo shuffle do you mean turbo flutter "stustustu" or referring to something else? I had thought they were the same thing. When I wrote the post my intention was to say it wasn't a flutter/compression surge sound. My understanding was that a flutter sound would be occurring when throttle is released, whereas I can keep the throttle in the same position for this noise
