The Wasteland - ACT Style

I remember seeing an episode of Top Gear from the UK where they looked at the spots the goverment had declared as being dangerous and the locations of speed cameras. Not one camera in was located in any of these dangerous locations.

Yep..it is all about revenue.

I bet if you did a similar thing here in Oz and compared those locations declared as blackspots and speed camera locations I bet the result would be the same as in the UK.

Diff backlash is my guess. Do you notice it (not as much) when you throttle on/off in first or second gear, say when you're navigating a carpark?

If you're out and about in Belco area today, swing past my work again and I can confirm my above suspicion in a matter of seconds :)

I notice when slowing up - mainly in gear changes from 4th to 3rd or even 3rd to 2nd. It's a bit of a "Crackle Pop (Bang)". I imagine a HUGE ass flame is coming out the exhaust but I'm sure this is not the case.

I'm guessing it's more of what Duncan has said - unburnt fuel. Can this damage anything in the exhaust? I do like when it happens, however, I rather it not happen if it is damaging something.

p.s I'm still a noob when it comes to cars :(

Nah don't stress about it damaging the exhaust...worst case scenario is it f**ks with your cat converter or maybe muffler > excuse to buy a fully sick hectic cannon setup LOL

Offer still stands if you're free today - happy to go for a drive around the block to confirm whether it's just exhaust popping (as your last description suggests) or diff backlash :)

Cheers for the offer Princess - gotta head to my sister's after work. Maybe you'll have to come to a Friday night meet and check it !

If warm this friday might duck out.

Pop=normal for aftermarket exhaust

Bang= awesome!, but exhaust leak, too rich can be timing too

Excess backlash is completely different and you will feel the play, there can be a knock no bang lol wtf! Go on a street that is 60kph in fourth constant accelerator, light stab with throttle a little play/small knock is normal. Massive play and big knock is not good.

My 33 had a "big knock" from the diff...turns out the two vertical mounts at the front of the diff had completely f**ked bushes, so it was a combination of free play in the diff as well as the entire housing moving LOL

Well there was enough free play in the diff itself I just concluded that was the cause of the sound....then when I went to get the thing engineered, that was one of the faults I needed to fix up haha.

Straight to Bunnings > grabbed a tube of Sikaflex > loosened the bolts on the diff mount > filled the whole gap/bush space with the shit > left to set until the next afternoon > tightened up and passed by engineer LOL

+11ty - Unburnt fuel

you make this happen by your gear change style and throttle actions :D

you think you race car driver uh_huh

quickshifter - lulz

And is this gear change / throttle action that I do healthy?

It normally happens when I do a slow gear change from 3rd-2nd and light on the throttle (Coming up to a 90 degree turn).

I also have one more question ! (so busy at work today hahaha :D)

Okay well, my long term goals for car ownership was planned to go like this:

Long Term:

1. Buy a skyline (R33 GTST) - Keep this thing until it dies (sold it as it couldn't pass pits)

2. Purchase R34 GTT - Keep this as a daily, a stepping stone until I can purchase a R34 GTR (The Dream).

3. Do no mods to Rosie as I have no intention to keeping it (wasting money) - Get R34 GTR and mod the FUAK out of it.

4. Pending work perm and a personal family deal (Rob knows about this one), however, it looks as if purchasing a R34 GTR might be quite awhile down the track (longer than I anticipated - I knew it was going to be couple years but may turn into several).

SO ! What I was thinking, since a new purchase might be quite a few years away - why not mod a car that is meant to be moded, ROSIE !.

My question is - very briefly (Do not want to waste peoples time)

How much would bigger Turbz + supporting mods roughly cost? I figured around the $5,000 mark

ECU+Tune = $2,000

Turbz = $1,500 - $2,000?

Fuel pump - ?

Other - ?

Now, this is all hersay as I need to have a figure in the ball park to even consider modding Rosie but I have done a bit of reasearch and that's all I have come up with :(

    • So next year I am looking at upgrading from my VE SS bomadore ute to something more refined.  I wanted to stick with a V8 but not anything German or Australian, either a coupe or a sedan. So if I wanted anything newish that limited my options to either the Lexus RCF which I quite like. But with the price they demand and a kid on the way a 2 door coupe is probably not going to be the best idea. The next best thing would be the ISF but the newest models are 2014 and commanding over 60k and even the older 2008 models in ok condition starting around 35k is kind of bullshit. So I figured if I could not have the noise I could perhaps make do with easy power. Enter the infinity Q50 or Skyline equivalent. The price difference between the 300 and 400hp models seems a bit crazy. Right now there is 300hp Q50 one on carsales from a dealer with 61km for 27k drive away. If I wanted to get a 400hp Red or 400R car the prices seem to start at 43k From my limited research it seems that the only differences are that the 400r/Red Red runs more boost and a more aggressive tune. There are are turbine speed sensors on the turbos. Has 2 pumps for the water to air intercooler. Runs an engine oil cooler. I'm guessing that the exterior trims might look a little more sporty as well. I had a lazy look for upgrades to bridge the gap on z1motorsports They have kits that upgrade the water to air heat exchanger as well as the coolant pump which should give a non Red/400r better intercooling temps than the stock Red/400r. I added an engine oil cooler with a thermostat as well to try and make things as close as possible. Obviously the ECU is going to need a tickle. Having not done much in the way of research they also sell a ECU flashing tool with pre loaded tunes that are supposed to boost the non Red/400R by 100hp which adds 1k USD to the cost. The total cost of the parts @ the current time including shipping and taxes worked out to be $4350 AUD. Personally I would rather get the car tuned on a dyno which would probably add more cost Assuming the worst that you got a workshop to install the new parts I would guess no more than 5 hours would be required in the worst case @ 5 x $150 per hour = $750 So the total cost could be around $5100 So for easy number 5k + 27K = 32k I guess that would leave some change left over to swap out the open diff and fit a LSD Any thoughts?
    • Right, not sure why I thought it to be a lean spike. It might be fixable with modern card-style hot film MAFs which have some design features to avoid counting reversion flow but I've never tried it myself.
    • I did not realise this, I'll contribute more and earn my stripes and retry later.
