Larger fuel lines?

Hi..When it comes time to upgrade the fuel lines in the car are they replaced by larger metal piping and bent accordingly or are they replaced by braided lines?

Are there any defectable issues with going the braided way?and what diameter hose/pipe should be looked at when doing this..

The whole reason for this is im going a new pump and i think it would help in terms of flow capabilities and be easier on the pump etc..
