Hi all,

Got a bit of a prob with my gearbox, its notching in like everygear. It will shift ok here and there but majority of the time its notching. You can clutch in and clutch out and it will still sorta crunch, after a few goes of pumping the clutch it eventually goes in. I was gonna try some gearbox oil with nulon treatment in the hope this would help, however i couldn't get the filler plug out! (lucky i didn't drain the oil!) Anyone got any tips for getting the bastard out?

What I am wondering is anyone that has experienced this before - it is even worthwhile changing the gearbox oil or is it time to thump in a new gearbox?

Any1 know what a decent second hand gearbox will set me back?

I know my clutch is on the way out sooner or later too....got rego and insurance coming up......this is gonna fkn cost.......

Perhaps your clutch isnt completely disengaging when you put the pedal to the floor. You could get that checked out. Otherwise I think it would be worth trying to change your gearbox oil as a temporary measure. If you cant get the filler plug off, just take it to a mechanic to get them to loosen both plugs for you. Then try some Castrol VMX 80 with the nulon stuff. If that doesnt help, time for a new box. Or if you are daring, maybe Redline Shockproof oil.

Change the oil...if that does not help much check the clutch engagement point and disengagement point (these should in fact be slightly different...but not by much)...other than that your syncros may have gone to heaven...which may be a result of your driving and/or crap box oil...

Hrmm haven't checked.......where abouts do i find the clutch master cylinder?? I've had a search and cant find anything :P

Clutch feels ok, doesnt' slip but yeah its definately copped a pounding, lots of launches/flat changes

You have fluid in the clutch master cylinder?

It could also be a worn clutch plate. That will necessitate removal of the gearbox to replace the clutch plates (driven and pressure).

you may have a leak or air in the system , that may explain why ir works when you push the pedal a few times .

when you are stationary with engine runing try to put in in reverse gear , if it crunches or doesn't want to go in, pump the clutch a few times quickly then try again , if it goes in then you have a problen with the hydrolic system .

look for leaks in the slave cilinder ( under the car mounted on the gearbox ) , inside the car where the clutch pedal is and under the bonnet where the master cilineder is .

Thanks for the help so far guys.

Got the gearbox oil changed, there was a shit load of metal chunks/shavings stuck on the gearbox drain plug magnet. Not good! May be down for new Gearbox, we'll ahve to see

Popped in Castrol VMX80 + Nulon G70. Also got clutch point moved up, apparently the clutch was not disengaging properly. Shifts fine now, very smooth, its never been this smooth in the year that i've had this car.

Pity the clutch is rooted and you have to lift the pedal about 3/4 way before it engages! i'm down for a new clutch now.

Thanks for the help guys! :-)

if the oil hasn't been changed for years you will find some very fine metal on the magnet as long as you dont have pieces of gear teeth it should be ok.

thats thereason the magnet is there .

There was quite a bit of metal shavings on the magnet, about a the size of a small marble. There were a couple of metal chunks - according to the mechanic these were bits of the synchro (whoops!) Getting the clutch point taken up some time back would have prevented this - its a classic case of not letting something go when there is a problem and getting it fixed as soon as possible. It changes nice and smooth at the moment, there is no more forcing the gearstick into gear, it just glides into place. The clutch is wasted so i'll replace the clutch i'm thinking about a xtreme single plate ceramic sprung clutch? I'm having a few thoughts about which clutch to choose; I'd love a twin plate but they are just so expensive! I'll drop in a new clutch and see how the gearbox holds up and if it packs it in looks like i'm up for a replacement (yay more money!!!!)

i would not use ceramic clutch , i don't know what power your car makes , if you got more than 300kw you may need a tween plate .

i have a full face organic plate in my r33 gtr with a heavier duty pressure plate and i don't have any problems .

the car makes over 300 kw @ wheels ( 11.7 1/4 mile @121 mph )

from 3rd into fourth gets a bit of a light notch occasionally now. All the other gears are fine, before it was notching into every gear......hence the shitload of metal shavings on the drainer plug magnet. That castrol VMX80 + nulonG70 is like versace for your gearbox.......i noticed the difference straight away

if u change gears slowly does it stick clunk?

might be snychros :P

Hi guys, I've also got a similar problem with my gearbox....

moderate crunching into 2nd and 3rd, and when i'm moving slowly and change back to first gear, it vibrates a little.

i'm thinking the clutch isn't disengaging fully. Any comments on how easy it is to adjust this? Is it something you can work out on your own having never done it before, or should i leave it to the experts?

the easiest way to check if the clutch disingages is to engage reverse when the car is stationary , if it doesn't crunch then its fine . try doing it with the pedal a little off the floor .

you can ajdust the pedal itself usualy , i never done it in a skyline though .
