I don't want to get far off topic, but actually it cost $9k. 400,000yen FOB = $5000 + $2000 to land + 1050 duty + 800 gst (refunded if you buy thru company) = $9000. Sure it will need work, but its a hell of a lot more car than an old corolla, I'd be happy to take on a stock ae86 with a stock gtr :)

not downhill through the twisties you wouldn't;)

c'mon thats the cartoon speaking again! I'm happy to take on one down any hill.....and I don't even have a damn engine in the car :)

While we are at it, you can't jump a car down cliffs to win a race!

Sticking your inside wheel in a gutter to stop understeer will bend your control arms and sooner or later you will pop out and understeer into a guard rail!

An ae86 is not quicker than a GT4 celica in snow!

And, last but not least, drifting is slower thru a corner than driving properly!

I think I feel better now ;)

yeah I agree was just stirring the pot...

although I did see a video of a race between 2 (modified 20v) ae86's and an R34 GTR around this really tight Japanese circuit... the R34 lead for a few laps but was then passed by both ae86's...

don't know how reliable the comparison was but its food for thought

yes i love that video but theres several things u need to remember

mazai circuit has many tight low speed corners, very short straight away sections

The drivers of the ae86 were PRO drivers and hte gtr driver is an amatuer.

The weight difference severley hurt the gtr on that track due to there being so many corners.

Personally I think that 6 grand for a mildly modded aus spec ae86 is a pretty good price. 100kw + 950 kg = fun :)

interesting re that video, my guess is that a professional driver in a gtr could keep up even in a tight circuit as long as the tyres are OK, 4WD is great for traction out of super tight corners

sorry I'm not trying to bag AE86s they are probably the best car of their age (age, AGE GET IT!!!!) but they are mostly just too expensive!

$200 for a fixer upper sounds alright to me :)

LOL - you guys!~!

actually spotted a nice blue Sprinter today running a 4agze without the supercharfger from what the guy said! went good, suprosed me when i saw the LPG sticker on the licence plate lol

seen plenty of AE86's in drift videos keep it up with the new cars, so they are value in that regards! but they wil never compare the Bathurst winning R32 GTR :D

  • 2 weeks later...

an ae86 is 1% performance and 99% hype. The aussie spec piece of shit that simply has the bodyshell of a levin is probably 0.5% of that 1% lol. And yes I own one.

Even done up, they're not all that great... honestly speaking, I have more fun in a R32 than I do in a drift spec AE86 (which only has very few parts that are factory left in it).

I bought mine cos I needed a daily driver while my R32 is being modded, and picked it up for $650 needing a lil bit of work to get roadworthy. It makes a grand 56kw at the fly from its carby engine. Maaaaaybe sometime soon I'll put a 4AGZE MR2 engine and maaaaybe even a 1.8L conversion using the bottom of a local 7AFE (cheap). But for now its just for use as a fun daily driver.

i used to own a 86 levin with 4age. it had 200,000km's on the clock and still went upto and sounded incredible at 8,700rpm with ease. it was my first car. i really regret selling it...

edit:

found a picture of it. wasn't as advanced with all the digicams back then... so hardly had any good photos with it... the red car was my friends trueno... both our first cars... u know the feeling how good it is to first get your p's... we went fanging every night, and dreamt about upgrading to better cars... besides the new driving sensation, i was quite embarassed to drive that car around and wanted nothing more than to get rid of it and buy myself a better car... the irony of that... i miss it so much now...

DSC00459.jpg

What is the car next to yours? Is that a Trueno with the TE71 engine? I think I might know him.

no no no... my AE86 is shit-spec atm... its as stock as a rock and is being restored using lots of bog and matt black and white paint. Its for use as a daily driver while I fix up my R32 (engine translplant + widebody kit etc, it'll be off the road for a while)

Always wanted to have the initial D car, so I've bought the nose cut of a Trueno, currently waiting for container to leave japan. But after goin thru all the AE86 mags from japan and stuff it looks liek the Levin has as much, if not more retspec around the tracks (non drift) than the Trueno. Also in its heyday the Levin was more popular than the trueno.

I'm not gettin rid of it anytime soon, its like my tinkering car. Once the R32 is completed I'll convert the AE86 into a dedicated track car of sorts, as parts for the AE86 are waaay cheaper than the R32, and also easier to tinker with too.

Right now its got all the aussie spec stuff, but I'll probably weld the diff and gut the car, poly fill the subframe and rivet it all up so its nice n stiff, then do some stupid stuff to the engine to get some nice power, a roll cage and a bucket seat and off I go to the tracks.

Chris keep me posted on the CA18 conversion... my mate says he can source me a full one with ECU n bits for $500 so it looks like a very nice option if its not too hard to put in.

hey just been readin, very interesting, im actually and ae86 nut im from toymods lol, but yer i have to agree they are very over priced ive seen a jdm trueno in japan for 30gran + but it was an absolutely crazy one lol. im after and aus spec sprinter myself i have about 3k to spend and have been looking for a while so if u guys have one for sale or no any1 selling id much appreciate if u told me, just pm me or email, u could even add me to your msn whateva floats your boat.

cheers

good point funkymonkey, actually amid all the drift hype I had totally forgotten that the AE86 was a genuinely good car at the time.

In fact Toyota Australia had a factory backed race team at the time that ran AE86s in Group C touring cars during the 80s, they even raced at Bathrust.

Down at the NDSOC super sprint I went to at Phillip Island I was up agains an ex TRD AE86, and it was about 1 sec quicker than the s2000 I was in, 2.01 vs 2.02. In fact it had apparently gone as quick as 1.58. For comparison that is about the same as skylinegeoff did in his 33 gtst.

    • Would this not be the same for the exhaust you've posted up?  If your exhaust volume and emissions are fine, why does the brand of pipe matter?
    • The issue is more the fact that there is inspectors that deal with japanese cars a lot and they might know what a real Mines pipe looks like. And then they're gonna get antsy and not pass your car. But I'd have to talk to one of them about this, because you know as well as me that it's just a damn pipe and it effectively doesn't do anything. As I need to have my GT2860s and my exhaust setup (and the increase in HP) TÜV'd anyways maybe they can just correct the entry in the papers or assign a badge to the front pipe. I'm no expert either though, will inquire about this.     Thanks for the insight. Not sure if having a custom made pipe is good or not. Will find out in due time I suppose. Would be kind of funny if this was made in Germany though.
    • See this is a really tricky topic as technically the same rules apply to all cars but for cars but there is a difference. If you want to modify a car like the Skyline which never existed here you have a bit more freedom as they do not adhere to EU specs anyway. Any modification you do has to be in dividually checked anyway so as long as one of the inspectors think it's ok and within the TÜV ruleset you can get stuff like a top secret rear diffuser put in your papers. Which frankly would need a shitload of tests and certificates for EU spec cars, like a 2010 BMW M3 for example. But if you DO run these tests and all tests come out ok (safety stuff for the most part) there is no problem running such a part legally. It's just way too expensive to do for a single person on one car. The most touchy parts are emissions related mods, like an exhaust, turbos, air intakes. If it makes noise or alters the carbon emissions it's essentially illegal until you prove it's not. Meaning it doesn't exceed noise limits or have worse carbon emissions. I'd say for hoses if you replace them same same it doesn't matter what material they are or what brand you use. Same for nuts and bolts usually, they won't go and specifically check that your water hoses and some bolts are 100% OEM parts, that is nonsense.
    • What I don't understand here is that it mentions using a sealant. So either way you're ruining the inside of the tire and making a huge mess to clean up. Why not just do that, air it back up to spec, then take it all off and put it back in the car? Also, why not just include a plug kit that's not garbage?
    • What a f**king weener. I have worked in Gary, IN. At the time there were more gun deaths each night there than almost anywhere else in the world. Still not a reason to be afraid. 95% of people from your part of the world only have 3 teeth left from when you were addicted to meth, and now you're perpetually wrecked by Fentanyl. The only saving grace is that most of you didn't vote for Trumpler. Speaking of which, I'm off to the oval office right now. Got to relieve my bowels.
