Rally driver dies during race

October 29, 2004

A SEASONED rally driver was killed and his navigator seriously injured in a high-speed crash during the East Coast Targa Rally west of Sydney today.

The driver of a Porsche competing in the event died after he went into cardiac arrest as a result of injuries from the rollover.

The accident happened on a stretch of sealed road between Brewongle and Loxley, east of Bathurst, about 10am (AEST).

Inspector Chris Davey from Bathurst police said the vehicle lost control after passing over a narrow bridge before veering to the left and crashing into a deep creek bed.

"It veered off to the left side of the road and crashed into a ditch, landing on its roof," Insp Davey said.

Medical personnel were able to free the men, both from Victoria.

"Both occupants were released from the vehicle and unfortunately the driver of the vehicle died on scene," Insp Davey said.

The passenger was treated at the scene for suspected spinal, neck and abdominal injuries.

He was airlifted to Nepean Hospital in a serious but stable condition, a spokeswoman for the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) said.

Insp Davey said the circumstances of the accident were being investigated and a report would be made to the coroner.

CAMS would conduct an investigation, he said.

Police and rally organisers today would not name the driver but rally director Tony Pennell said he was highly experienced and had competed in many Australian rallies.

Rally organisers stopped competition for that section of the event after the accident but continued competition for the following stages.

"Extensive rally safety procedures were implemented as a result of the incident," Mr Pennell said in a statement.

"No other competitors were at risk during the incident."

Competition will continue on the final day of the rally tomorrow.

The four-day rally is held on 198km of sealed public roads which are closed for the event.

The rally, first held in 2000, is conducted over at least 37 stages on roads in areas to the north and west of Sydney, extending into the Blue Mountains and around the towns of Lithgow, Bathurst, Oberon and Orange.

    • hahaha @joshuaho96 the most action it gets is when I have to drive from West to SE VIC to meet the fam. Even then, it;s on highway cruising speeds
    • don't know anyone in this thread, but i just found it, read the entire thing in a few hours, realized greg is still posting progress, and just have to say, this is awesome. it looks awesome. 100% right about the Uras kit making it a pain to get on hoists...have the same kit on my 34 and it takes six 2x4s and race ramps to do it without taking parts off. this reminds me exactly of this thread. https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/build-projects-and-project-cars/r63-amg-the-unicorn-of-my-destruction/110824/page8/
    • The only way to make that better is to weld on some bozozoku tips up past window height and roll with the cool kids.
    • I'd want an even MORE side on view. More or less you want to make sure the outlet is actually square with the outermost part of the bumper. Or you end up getting soot all over your bumper from your hektik exhaust. In any case, it looks pretty close. I think the way to fix this is probably more of an overhaul at an exhaust specialty shop if you want tips that are rounded off or sit nicely with the bumper but have proper clearance and don't move - Probably more of a redesign than a quick fix. I've pencilled in my own exhaust with its own various problems, pinholes, PITA fitment, and other issues and can see myself going to a shop and saying "JUST DO THIS BUT BETTER?"  Which is gonna work better than any more small fixes. I'm gonna chime in here officially with "from an outsider perspective this exhaust looks fine so this is self OCD probably" (which I also suffer from)
