It's the indicator that shows your seatbelt is not plugged in. (couldn't think of a better way of describing it)

The reason you don't have anything connected to it now is because you have aftermarket seatbelts that were fitted so that your car would comply to Australian Standards.

If you look at the seats that get sold in import wreckers you will see that the seatbelts have a wire and plug coming from them
