Brand new gearbox stuffed, nissan says 'too bad'

Recommended Posts

i listened to the wav file and it kinda sounds like my cousins R32. My dads a mechanic and he was telling us that it was a bearing in the gearbox (not sure which one) and that we needed to remove the gearbox and change it. It almost sounds exactly the same actually.

oh and by the way my dad has a S3 GTR and there is no noise coming from the gearbox at all

Hope that helps a little

;)

Sounds like an EXCEDY thing to me. My new excedy twin plate has just intermitantly started to make that noise ;). Same as you describe, press the clutch and it is quite release it and it's there instantly. Also is pretty loud sometimes, and i have a loud exhaust. I've only heard it twice though.

Al - i woudn't mind meeting up with you someone to have a listen to your clutch and have a word about it - drop me a PM if you're free in the near future...

What makes you think its an excedy thing? I don't know if i belive that since it was perfect (no noise) in my old box, then i put new box in and it has the noise, bit of a co-incedence(sp?)

As i understand it the thrust bearing is responsible for pressing the pressure plate onto the clutch (although i could be wrong - go check www.howthingswork.com), which engages it.. if you have a pissy thrust bearing (not enough spring) which is too small for a heavy clutch I'd say that would cause the clutch to not engage it properly.. resulting in noise.

How does it "feel" ? like its just in neutral all the time, like its nearly going in or what?

all gears?

The thrust bearing in my old car started to go, as whoever did the clutch i think never changed it properly, resulting in a bit of noise (not as bad as that WAV though) and sometimes a bit of "flop" in the clutch. It felt it was grinding when I was letting out the clutch sometimes. Could have been clutch plate worn, but it didn't quite sound like that as it always used to bite fairly well.

PM sent

Just reading the prevous posts, there seem to be one or two other people with EXCEDY clutches having the same noise. Maybe we haven't fitted the right size thrust bearing, as the kit does not come with one. I actually spoke to the EXCEDY rep at the 1st Autosaloon and he stated that these clutches will be sold with a new thrust bearing in the future. My mechanic did fit a new one to mine and it worked fine for a while, but now intermitantly has that exact problem.

Stupid question; But have you re-adjusted the clutch take up point on your clutch slave cylinder, when you fitted the new box?

pred: i think your thinking of a push type clutch, we have pull type in R33 GTR's...

the box feels fine, shifts smooth as a freshly waxed......box :)

when its in neutral its fine, its just the noise, and sometimes the clutch pedal feels like it hesitates or something, hard to explain and i can't replicate it when i want so no one else has experienced it in the car with me...

Al: Who else have you heard/seen of having this problem? How long have you had your clutch?

I didn't put the box in so no idea baout re-adjusting the clutch take up point - what will this do?

I have not seen this problem in anyone elses car, but other people have posted, in this thread, that they have similar sounds, be it not as load.

To describe how loud my noise is; I have a bocsh 044 external fuel pump mounted in my boot, near the battery. These pumps are bloody loud, especially with the windows closed, on idle. The sound was just as loud, and that's with the windows closed! Only happened twice or three times.

I've had the Excedy twin plate for approx 11 months and the noise only started about a month ago. The clutch is definately not worn.

If the take-up point is too low to the floor, the clutch MAY not be disengaging properly.

Ait: did you change the thrust with the new clutch?

That wav file may make it sound a little worse than it is (it is bad...) but the recording was taken from outside/under the car so probbaly sounds a little worse than it does in real life, but its certainly not a quiet whine...

I'm taking it to a gearbox place that my mechanic uses today to let them have a listen, see what they say.

Took it to the gearbox place today, he said he's 99.9% sure that it is the gearbox, So i'm gonna get the box taken out of the car and deliver it to nissan..... see what they can do

dont want to get your hopes up ferni. My rb25 gearbox had that exact same whine when the new clutch was put in and then stoped doing it when the clutch was put out and it would only do it on take off's or when going for reverse. It really only was there when the car was at a stand still.extreeme sprung button 5 puck ceramic.personally i think it sounds like the thrust bearing.

It has taken a little over 70km to stop the sound it had.And when driving there has been no difference in it's performance b4 or after the sound.Maybee it just needs a little running in.

Hope that helps though it seems as though i am allready to late.

Yup the thrust bearing came with the clutch. I've heard of S15s with the same problem after putting in an Daikin Exedy HD, so I assumed it was because of the clutch and thrust bearing. I've not done anything about it though, and it's bloody annoying.

For your case get someone to check the clutch fork too.
