Done it six times.

Boring Yes can be. I would truck it.

Too risky at night with all the wild life.

If you do it dont stop at the aboriginal run Road houses.

Im not going to say why in case I get flamed. :flamed:

I will let you guess why.

I got my Soarer Trucked over and drove the 4x4. Based on the cost of and accom/ food etc it was about even.

Cheers :D

Ive been across three times, drove it twice, since it is coming into summer it will be hot as, not to mention boring as hell.

As someone said earlier i wouldn't drive the skyline across, i nearly had a mishap hitting a kangaroo doing about 150km/h. (i was driving an old corolla though)

I wouldn't think there would be much 98octance fuel out there either, and if there is then imagine the cost! I remember about 3years ago the cost of normal unleaded was like $1.20 a litre. :hellpisd:

I would go for trucking it!! :D

Bunch of WA guys drove over to SA last year for drift event, aside from the bucket seats bein shockers to try sleep in, they had a ball.

Research where you can stop for fuel, and you'll be right. And yeah, watchout for the wildlife!!!!

i was there ...... ummm truck it otherwise be prepared to replace a few roo dents when you get over here. There are kangas everywhere! Dont drive over with people with a lot of bodily gas ..... and be prepared not to shower for a couple of days.

Theres my wisdom

As long as ure careful and drive during the day u shouldnt have problems with roos. They only come out at sunup and sundown. Watch out for the eagles though they will mess u up aswell.

There is no 98 octane from BP Norseman till like adelaide from what i saw at the start of the year. Generally u would get 400km off a tank right? well that cuts it close for some stretches, u will have to stop at almost every pump. U could take a jerry full of tolulene, should be a fun trip all up, throw a swag in the back and off u go. It is long and boring but there is some cool sights, like that super long sweeper coming down off the plain (hint: thats where the cops got us)

There are pay showers at Eucla but wear thongs or something, the real problem is all the crap u gonna need to take along, like the swag will fill the boot, the jerry will fill the baack seat, once u have clothes, water, food, it will be pretty heavy, and thats for 1 person.

Wanna go to summernats do we? plan a few days for it, i only left one and didnt event leave teh war memorial or the fireworks shop.

I have driven the Nullabour over 13 times - long yes - boring never. (if you want boring drive over the Hay plain) and rule number one is dont driver during sunset and sunrise especially if it has rained recently as it will be Roo city.

Its an awesome trip and i would do it again tomorrow but it needs planning to do safely.

I normally plan to get to Ceduna and then leave there early in the morning as between Ceduna and Yalata the Roos are not too bad, that way you can make it to Norseman by nightfall and then can drive into Perth the next day.

I find the Police to be good i been pulled over on almost every trip for a "Licence check" they normally want to se if you have a planned destination for the day and i usually sit on 140Kph going accross so as long as you are not being a outright idiot and doing 160 u should be fine. I believe you can now get Premium unleaded all the way also.

Enjoy the Adventure

Cmon Bully its not all that amazing, especially the super long stretch. At least the hay plain has curves and some big wheat silos and stuff, if it was that interesting they would have called it the actionbour. Gotta stop at the bite if uve never seen it though, man that place freaks me out, i hate heights.

I dont think its really that unsafe. There is quite alot of traffic along the Eyre highway and u can always get a hand, wouldnt want to have an accident though, long way to hospital but thats what the landing strip is for i guess.

I shudder at the thought of what a roo or emu would do to a skyline.

Man the drive over is awesome for a first timer, just dont fall asleep on australias longest stretch of straight road (147.7km from memory) not one turn... definately do not drive at night or during dusk as one roo and its the end of your trip... i made the mistake of driving at night and i had to drive at 40km/h all night simply because there was that many, and you can never tell which way they are going to jump, because hey they are stupid kangaroos. I tried to stop but lets just say there was an incident with a spider as big as my hand crawling across the front of my windscreen towards my open window, needless to say that was enough to make every piece of dust or twig that came through the aircon a potential spider crawling up my leg, its a story i tell often thought...

Take as much variety in music as you can, especially stuff thats going to keep you awake.. it does get tiring as much as you think you love driving.. most importantly if you feel tired dont shake it off, stop and rest or take a walk...

Be prepared for anything, better to be safe than sorry, make sure you pack a first aid kit, get your car serviced, pack a jerry can and also extra water.. theres up to 400-450km's between stops so you have to remember that, if you break down i think its about $2 a km or something ridiculous to be towed back even if you are an rac member.

Dont speed whatever you do, they have planes that go out and take your speed from markings made on the road...then the next cop you see will be the one coming to bust you. And be prepared to pay up to 40c more than the going rate for fuel...

Its definately character building and you appreciate what those truckies go through to deliver stuff that you take for granted.. my advice is do it because you wont regret it, just make sure you do it properly..

Sorry if i re-iterated anything that was already said... good luck whatever decision you make..

    • Alright guys, I've got good odds the motor survives due to a majority of spare parts. Who's taking bets on clutch, who's on transmission, and who's go diff? Happy to also take bets on if it still overheats in traffic or not 😛     Car looks amazing by the way. I've never been a fan of R34 rears, so really, I don't think any body kit etc solves that for myself, but the front end looks amazing!
    • As an ex-skyline owner Going off how these things are now "modern classics", I would keep the twins and just "refresh" bits that are required for reliable power and have a car you can take out for a cruise whenever you get the itch As a idiot who cannot leave things alone Going deep into the "rabbit hole" is a easy thing to do, as previously mentioned, once you start it becomes a slippery slope, wirh lots of supporting mods, and possibly rebuilds, and unless you have a bottomless pit of funds, the car can spend most of its life sitting in the garage,  broken, waiting for parts, or building more funds For a classic like a R32 GTR Basically, a reliable OEM+ refresh, that isn't a broken garage queen, is alot better than a car that you build, then break, then fix, then break again And it isn't just the engine you need to worry about, these beasties are getting on in age, and all parts are getting, and have got, expensive, the days of picking up cheap replacement engines and other driveline parts are well and truly over The funds not spent on going a single with quality parts, and with all the other other bits required to make it happen, could be spent on refreshing alot of other parts A wise man once said "If you cannot afford 2 GTR's, you cannot afford 1", I also believe he said this about 20 years ago when you could pick up a clean R32 GTR up for around $20k My advice for a R32 GTR (the one and only true Godzilla in my mind) is to think holistically about the whole car, the body, the power train, the suspension, the brakes, and the driveline SAU is a wealth of knowledge with decades of Skyline experience,  from stock, to OEM+, to modified to varying degrees, to full on or weekend or dedicated racecars, as well as full on money pits that rarely leave their garage Treat the old girl nice and give her what she deserves, you are a lucky man to own such a classic car
    • For that price you could buy the hypergear turbo (big fan as I run one) and the Haltech ECU..
    • +1 for the Elite 2500. Get some new knock sensors while you are at it (pretty cheap), look up the TAARKS Nissan knock sensor kit. You may also want to get new coils (R35gtr) while your at it (assuming your on stock ones), as they are a liability. Mine started right up and idled fine on the base map. Also go MAP over MAF, as said above, Haltech make this super simple right out the box. Another fanboy of DBW here, Outsider Garage from your neck of the woods make some nice conversion gear for the R33 (that’s where I got some of my gear from).
