Sup,

Iv gota sick 32 GTR arriving from Japan soon, stock and 76Km's and am wondering where should i get it registered. A dood i know with a GTR reckons ACT is a bad idea, because Dickson will bend me over, and do me dry. So although I live in Canberra, should i get it registered at my parents place in Sydney?

Cheers for any help

yea what terminal said if its stock you should have any problems as long as it has been brought it in legit eg proper compliencing done etc. my r33 was bog stock and they did the basics on it and said it was fine my only downer was i didnt know the weight of the car i thought it would have said it in my manual :)

Sinista's R32 GTR is quite modified, and crossed over DIckson motor registry no problems. If the modifications carried out are legal, and done right, you should have no problems. But since you say it is stock, there should be even less of a problem. If it's a 1989 model remember you need to carry out the required changed to make the car legal by Australian standards, including Side intrusion bars, fuel filler restriction, child restraint points, high level brake light, etc.

Good luck

when amaru and i registered our cars the law in place was that ANY import coming from out of state MUST go over the dickson pits to be registered in the ACT, e.g. My r33 was a canberra car but as the owner moved from nsw, it still had those plates, so when i changed the rego to my name i had to take it over dickson to pass ACT rego. however i think since then the law has be repealed, so you can have a rego and safety check done at any authorised rego inspection garage (there are several that are are authorised to do this in canb, so they will not be as harsh as dickson) but im not sure on the changes to the law so you'll have to check that out.

but if you claim your primary residence in the ACT and the car is under your name the car MUST have ACT plates, so i assume your thinking of registering the car in your parents name in sydney? then passing it there?

anyway its all pretty unescessary if the car is stock and in good cond, as they will let you go. dont beleive all of the hype you hear about the evil guys at dickson, because most of them are avid car enthusiasts, its just the old guys that can be tight asses.

Yah, i will have to check the new laws.

And yah, my other option was sticking it under my olds name, but I guess if its stock, i should be Ok - Ta

Now i just got find something to pre-occupy my self with ... for EIGHT WEEKS! *Where’s that mag?....*

Speaking from experience (last Thursday). I tried to take my lightly modified GTR over the pits at Dickson and those pricks bent me right over and jammed the biggest thing they could find right up my arse :)

The left low beam head light didn't work, fair enough. But they also got me for not having child restraint clips (the brackets are installed) and the one that completely pissed me off was they failed me for not having an owners manual.

The car is very clean. No major mods and they still screwed me. The funny thing is that I have registered several imports in the past and this was the worst experience I have had with Dickson.

If you think that NSW rego will be straight forward my suggestion is to register it in NSW. Dickson inspectors are complete Wankers!!!

My 2 cents

Godzillr - you didn't get bent over, you just didn't have all the stuff on your car to pass rego :) The child restraints are required by law, as are working headlights and an owners manual. But it's still a pain in the butt and I can understand why your a little Pi$$ed :)

Having to take your car back out there is a major pain, especially if you work f/t and live on the other side of town..

On my old car I was failed on a missing wheel nut !! I didn't even notice that it wasn't there. It was a pain in the butt to get time off work and take it back over just cause of one damn nut :)

I've found them to be pretty good. But before you take it over the pitts have a good look over the car and check everything out etc.. Even if it's a clean looking car it could have worn castor rod bushes (pretty common), or a small leak somewhere that they have to fail you on :D

J

My sympathies to you Godillr, I had the same experience with them, they even had the nerve to accuse me of stealing the car... Even though I had all the paper work. Grrrr it gets me worked up just thinking about it. This happened about 3 years ago, and I notice they haven't changed.

    • But, do I have to? 😬
    • While doing my tailgate struts I found some rust. Also replaced my bonnet struts. Such a cool satisfaction with that job.
    • So I removed as much as I could from both sides. The shop vac did a great job of clearing 99% of it. I got it all as clean as I could and then absolutely drenched the whole lot in the rust converter. Tonight or tomorrow I'll hammer it again. The cavity must be close to 400mm in length and surprisingly I was able to get it right to the back.  I'll quickly reassemble and then pretend I never saw it. I'll post pics (for me to ignore later) soon.
    • Yea she is a hoot to drive
    • I have always resisted the urge to go silly. 8" wide wheels and street friendly spring rates? Check. (Let's not talk about the steadily increasing spread of spherical joints across my suspension!!) Stock turbo, run at 12 psi? Check. Lasted for~?10 years before it died. Highflow put on rather than seizing the opportunity to go G45. You don't need 300 rwkW, let alone the more massive numbers that seem to be essential these days, to have a car that is already way too powerful and fast for a streeter. ~250rwkW is fine. I've never exceeded 200, although I will sneak up above it if and when I manage to get my finger out and do what needs to be done to use the highflow's capacity. You don't need $10k worth of CF bits glued onto the outside. You don't need razor sharp ankle cutting front splitters. You don't need the car to be 2" off the ground. You don't need flawless paint, mirror finished wheels, brand new indicator lenses, etc etc. All these things just make the car impractical and will cause you pain when they get damaged, which is inevitable for a street car. A few nice additions are good. Good seats are good. A nice stereo is good. A/C is good! (46° on the road yesterday and my A/C is degassed again. Was moderately traumatic driving home!) The main reason I stick with a mildly modified old Skyline is that I have had it for >25 years, the mods are the rolling result of 25 years of things dying and being upgraded opportunistically, coupled with a few "just 'coz" ones. And I hate almost all modern cars. If I was a young buck starting out now.... I wouldn't bother. Cars have a few years left where there is any possibility of interest or fun. Thereafter there will be no such thing allowed or possible. Any time, money and effort spent now on a project would just be a waste.
