Nice to see the NRMA has a clue:

NRMA's Jack Haley said the shortage affected European and high-performance cars.

"Only the WRX and Porsches use the [Optimax] 98 octane and some will run OK on premium unleaded if it can be found," he said.

Riiiiight.

Lucien.

It must be effecting all premium fuels in Sydney, I went to the Mobil on Victoria Rd at Rydalmere this morning and they had no Synergy 8000. Apparantly the BP across the road didn't have any Ultimate either.

Does anyone know of anywhere where you can get 98RON fuel around the Parramatta area. I'm pretty much running on empty and don't like the idea of having to use regular unleaded.

Just out of interest - in an emergency like you are out of petrol but can get nothing but regular.... would it be a good idea to say carry a bottle of octane booster with you? I mean.. if you just fillup say 1/4 tank to get you to another servo with 98RON could you say fillup 1/4 tank 1/4 bottle of booster, not boost hard and get to the proper servo?

Personally i don't like any of those additives - I'm scared of them so .... any opinions?

I once had a ****wit at a service station switch pumps on me and I filled an entire tank with normal unleaded. Slight bit of boost out of the station and I could hear it pinging so I went back and put some octane booster in it.

I then drove around off boost for a week till it ran out and it went fine. No residual issues.

Someone said that BP Ultimate was actually refined in WA so it shouldnt affect the guys here in SA and stuff. So Im not sure how that will affect its availability over on the eastern states...

If you do run out, try to source some toluene and use a 10% treatment rate with Vortex or something.. Doesnt leave deposits all over your combustion chambers/turbo/plugs like MMT based boosters do (like nulon and wynns).

I drove past 3 bp stations yesterday in western sydney and they all had ultimate (filled up at the third one), drove past a few shell stations too and they were definately out of optimax.

On a side note, i noticed some bp stations now have unleaded(91), premium(96) and ultimate(98) on the same pump so in case of emergency i know where i'll be looking first.
