Hi Guys,

On reflection of the recent tragedy (EVLR34), Both Christian and I have decided to try and organise a group Advanced Drivers Training day.

The training will be of a Defensive nature, which will help you to drive safely and be able to keep in control when you need it most.

We will be organising this for Sydney some time too, and we really do hope that someone will organise something for other areas, or people will be responsible enough to see the benefits of booking themselves on these courses.. it is money that is truly well spent (for example, what is a $300 blow off valve worth compared to the safety of you and those around you???)

Guys, even if you don't participate in this Training (or have done so before), please try and take a minute to reflect on your driving style, and please show respect for others on the road,

Both myself and Christian have started to contact driver training companies, hopefully we can arrange some sort of deal, we will let you know when we have more details (we will add it up here, and when we are organising the event, it will be posted in the events section)

Thanks Guys,

Kent

Be safe out there

Guys, please only vote 'yes' if you REALLY DO intend on coming to one. Organising these things isn't easy, especially when people tell you they'll come and then dont.

Christian

Fatz,

it seems from the events section that your driver training is track based? (ie. how to drive on a track?). We are aiming solely at driver training for road safety, not to get a fast lap time, or to get sideways.

I also don't think it is very pc. to try to associate a drift training day with this.. it isn't what we are trying to acheive :(

I am sorry if i am wrong, please let us know :P

All of aarons driving instructors teach everything from basic car control to full speed work

Anything to get people of the road is good I think

Novice drifters generally give it a go spin off and scare themselves so much they don’t try it again.. (very therapeutic)

i did a level 1 driving course with ian luff. hes a total knob jockey but the course was fun. I reccoment that you do the second one, becasue the first one is just stopping and stopping while braking, very basic. i hope that everyone already knows to pump the breaks and not lock them up...dam u abs boys.

i think it was at oran park in the skid pan. one of the guys there sounded like he was constantly sucking on a helium balloon i couldnt take him seriously.

If u need help to organise, or want me to get some info for u, im sure i have it in my room somewhere...

Unfortunately we had a very very bad customer service experience from the "Relationship" manager of Ian Luff's whilst we have been researching into discounts for this.

I don't want to get into it because her attitude has both myself and Christian absolutely fuming..

"Again, I am concerned about the knee jerk reaction by your members to only start thinking about driver training the day or two before a funeral where three people were killed in an accident involving a Skyline."

that is only a small snipet of the conversation :) a surprising and rather insensitive comment i would have thought.

needless to say, with attitudes like that, they are not top on the list..

"Again, I am concerned about the knee jerk reaction by your members to only start thinking about driver training the day or two before a funeral where three people were killed in an accident involving a Skyline."

what a bitch. the more politically correct way to say that shuld be something like this...

"Im glad to see that people in your club are coming to terms of high performance cars, and are willing to improve your driveing skills for the safty of yourselves and others on the road"

*que cheasy music*

wow! can I buy shares in Luff Enterprises? They must be in the super enviable position of being able to throw business away! :uh-huh:

I have done Peter Finlay, Ian Luff and a Peter Fitzgerald day. I round them all to be excellent. I must be different as I think Ian Luff brakes the ice in what can be a tense experience and laugh my head off. I also like Paul from BD4's being blunt so maybe I need help. I have also done a week training NSW Police Driver Training and have run 9 track days now as well as attended many others. There is a big difference with track driving and road driving and education and forming correct habits and driving techniques then work on skills to go with it. Driving on road is much more defensive driving as other cars and pedestrians are involved.

With Ian who is vastly experienced I think the clash happens when he knows he is very good and may clash with others that think they are but are not, but don't want to be told. He has often been on TV with so called young over confident drivers in their hectic WRX etc and positions them or shows them to makes fools out of themselves.

If you do use Ian you could prime him to tone down the sarcasm. I would also be willing to be involved if you do a day.

Our next track day is 1st May at Wakefield which is a way off yet.

I might add we use top class instructors at our days that give advice both in car and in pits. Including in the past Ian Luff. Also Warren Luff who came 12th or was it 13th at last Bathurst in the DJ Ford, Jose Fernandez who came 3rd in Konica Cup and 3rd at last Bathurst. Jonathon Web 2nd at last Bathurst last Porsche Cup and often in top 5. John Boston and Aaron Lewis also both very experienced and very good instructors. Hard to get much better caliber than this as they simply are not available. Some are good drivers but not good instructors or only track not road also.

For the guys who are voting for "somewhere else", can you please post your city, it will hopefully promote more interest for something to happen

I'd definately participate, Wakefield Park, or Winton.

Peter Finlay is a wacker and wouldn't do it with him, anyone else fine.

You've gotta give Fitzy big marks for mastering the art of controlling a pendulum while driving bloody fast! He is welcome to instruct me anytime-not only on technique but mainly on attitude.

BUT.....can someone tell me which Luff it was that was on that stoopid show that was based around the Eastern Creek skid pan/figure 8/dirt figure 8 in that show last year? It didn't really seem like a good idea to rip up the handbrake while his 'student' was negotiating an "emergency brake while turning scenario"? Gee I can't understand why the car spun.

I can understand that most drivers think they are Richo (and are definitely not) and making the public question their driving prowess is a good idea, but making someone spin when the car isn't strictly under their control (like someone else yanking on the handbrake) doesn't really achieve the aim. I'd probably be thinking, "if that muppet hadn't ripped on the handbrake I'd have made that turn/stop."

...Ben

Seems like people have a prob with driving instructors for some reason. Not sure why. Maybe some don't like being told what to do or something. I really can't understand you statement PK2. It also seems that maybe who ever we get someone won't like them and maybe most won't like who ever it is after being told how to drive. Too many cups full syndrome maybe.

YO880 started agood and much needed idea and hey quite possibly save someones life or at least prevent damaging their car so we should support such initiatives I say.

Great idea team. In Melbourne we use Kevin Flynn or kevwrx (forum nic) of Driver Dynamics http://www.driverdynamics.com/

Kev is highly experienced, a lifelong driving instructor it would appear, and takes courses from defensive right through to track, trick and protective skills to order.

I myself won't participate due to the number of defensive courses I have participated in, not to mention instructing light and heavy vehicle licensing courses and defensive courses, but I only add that to support my thoughts on Kev as one of, if not THE finest driving instructors I have ever encountered.

Ian Luff tells it how it is, many people don't like that..

to some people he is arrogant, to others he is confident...

I worked with him for about 2 years and never had a problem with him and in fact found him to not only be a wealth of knowledge, but a top bloke to boot. if I was doing a course where people need to pulled into line and told / shown they are not invincible....- Luffy would be the FIRST person I would have to do the training..

Having said that - if my car is ready by the time you run the course, I would be interested in attanding if there is room, and you want a humble old Cressida partaking in the event.

    • I think you're really missing the point. The spec is just the minimum spec that the fuel has to meet. The additive packages can, and do, go above that minimum if the fuel brand feels they need/want to. And so you get BP Ultimate or Shell Ultra (or whatever they call it) making promises to clean your engine better than the standard stuff....simply because they do actually put better additive packages in there. They do not waste special sauce on the plebian fuel if they can avoid it. I didn't say "energy density". I just said "density". That's right, the specific gravity (if you want to use a really shit old imperial description for mass per unit volume). The density being higher indicates a number of things, from reduces oxygen content, to increased numbers of double bonds or cyclic components. That then just happens to flow on to the calorific value on a volume basis being correspondingly higher. The calorific value on a mass basis barely changes, because almost all hydrocarbon materials have a very similar CV per kg. But whatever - the end result is that you do get a bit more energy per litre, which helps to offset some of the sting of the massive price bump over 91. I can go you one better than "I used to work at a fuel station". I had uni lecturers who worked at the Pt Stanvac refinery (at the time they were lecturing, as industry specialist lecturers) who were quite candid about the business. And granted, that was 30+ years ago, and you might note that I have stated above that I think the industry has since collected together near the bottom (quite like ISPs, when you think about it). Oh, did I mention that I am quite literally a combustion engineer? I'm designing (well, actually, trying to avoid designing and trying to make the junior engineer do it) a heavy fuel oil firing system for a cement plant in fricking Iraq, this week. Last week it was natural gas fired this-that. The week before it was LPG fired anode furnaces for a copper smelter (well, the burners for them, not the actual furnaces, which are just big dumb steel). I'm kinda all over fuels.
    • Well my freshly rebuilt RB25DET Neo went bang 1000kms in, completely fried big end bearing in cylinder 1 so bad my engine seized. No knocking or oil pressure issue prior to this happening, all happened within less than a second. Had Nitto oil pump, 8L baffled sump, head drain, oil restrictors, the lot put in to prevent me spinning a bearing like i did to need the rebuild. Mechanic that looked after the works has no idea what caused it. Reckoned it may have been bearing clearance wrong in cylinder 1 we have no idea. Machinist who did the work reckoned it was something on the mechanic. Anyway thats between them, i had no part in it, just paid the money Curiosity question, does the oil system on RB’s go sump > oil pump > filter > around engine? If so, if you had a leak on an oil filter relocation plate, say sump > oil pump > filter > LEAK > around engine would this cause a low oil pressure reading if the sensors was before the filter?   TIA
