Hey guys,

I am looking at doing to turbo upgrade on my R33 GTS-T when I get back from London. I have been looking at quite a few, but would like any info from anyone that has or had a GT30R and how it performed?

I know that HKS uses Garrett turbos (with a few mods and badge them as HKS) eg. HKS 3037 is based on the Garrett GT30, but for the price the Garrett seems unbeatable.

I have a high flow turbo on now, but am bored with the output, so looking for more. Anyone with experience on the GT30R...how high in the rev range does it start to spool up? what power output was gained?

I have found 2 GT30's that are GT40 models not the T04S version.

1. Compressor A/R - 0.70, Wheel trim - 64, Wheel Diameter - 2.41/3.22, HP - 550, Flow Lbs - 65

Turbine A/R - 0.82, Wheel trim - 84, Wheel Diameter - 2.16/2.36

2. Compressor A/R - 0.70, Wheel trim - 64, Wheel Diameter - 2.41/3.22, HP - 600, Flow Lbs - 65

Turbine A/R - 1.06, Wheel Trim - 84, Wheel Diameter - 2.16/2.36

The larger the A/R the slower the turbine has to spin to flow the same amount of air, but the more lag right? So the model with the compressor A/R - 0.70 and turbine A/R - 0.82 would be a better choice for response?

In Garrett speak a GT30R uses a BCI 18C (76.2mm/3" six bladed 56 trim) compressor wheel . To be technically correct its a GT37 series comp wheel . Too many people claim a turbo is a GT30 because it has the UHP (Ultra high Pressure Ratio) GT30 Turbine . This is why HKS call theirs a GT3037 , 30 series turbine with 37 series compressor . Also why 3040's use 30 series turbine with 40 series compressor and so on with 3540's , 2835's etc . Confusion exists because some firms name a turbo from is wheel diameters ie ATP sells a 3071 or 30 series turbine with 71mm compressor .

The two you mention look like GT3040's with different AR turbine housings . If they are seven blade 82mm compresors it dosen't get much worse . I didn't look to see what engine you have but if its a RB25T most at this site see the GT30R as ideal if not a smidge large . I only ever drove one std R33 GTS and for 2.5 L is was no torque animal . If I had one it would wear the GT30R on a good cast manifold . My two paseos only ,

If ur after a Garrett GT30R turbo for ur R33, u can't go wrong in terms of both cost & performance. I just got one fitted to my skyline..fantastic.

With mine it might be a bit different as it is an auto..but the turbo starts to spool up around 3500-4000rpm (so still heaps of driveability without being overly laggy) & comes on to boost pretty strongly around the 4500rpm mark. I also had my car dynoed @ 317hp @ wheels..much more potential there with this turbo but with my current standard auto 'box tuning was kept pretty conservative @ 15psi.

So personally i think it would b a great option..that is if u take it from someone who has actually had experience driving with this turbo..can't go wrong in my books.

Thats great to hear that you have the GT30R and are completely happy with it. Makes my decision a lot easier. I will hopefully get to around 400rwhp with new computer, cams, bigger injectors etc. Cant wait to get home and start work on it, but still going to be away from my car for over a year. Oh well, gives me more time to save up pounds :cheers:

I have the exact or very similiar GT30 on my car with all the other goodies!!

On my stock internal Rb25 it makes 255rwkw at 1bar and wround 310rwkw at 20psi with a 45mm external gate (non-shootout)

Turbo comes on from around 4000rpm so its easy to drive normally off boost during heavy traffic, but then you need a big clutch to hold the power so it makes it a pain in the ass in heavy traffic :)

The GT30R is a good turbo, there are Supra's running them at over 30psi on stock internals :) 800+rwhp is not uncommon, so its pretty much a perfect turbo for mid-high end performance. Ofcourse, a stock rb25 will have a hard time even resembling the 2JZ torque curve :(

I'd say its a good turbo to get in antisipation of head and flow mods in the future.

what cams are you running? stock? I will be doing a cam change also, probably to HKS 265's. Will have to change computer also for the new turbo, as only have a re-mapped standard ecu. Was looking at motec as it has traction control option to help put all the power to the ground, but maybe the pfc will do fine seeing as it about a quarter of the price. How do you find yours with traction running up to 324rwkw?

stock cams but only adj hks cam gear on the exhaust set to around 3 degrees negative i think.

At 20psi where it make over 300rwkw traction is an issue. I have new 265 rear hankook silica tyres which help abit but most time 1st and 2nd are more sideways than acceleration forward!!

The propper GT30R has the .60AR port shrouded T04E comp cover . Look in the Garrett PDF for the part number . It is the same CHRA as the 56 Trim HKS GT3037 , the compressor cover is also port shrouded on the HKS GT3037S . Instead of the four milled grooves it uses a seperate section and looks like a narrow circular channel outside the funnelled inlet .

Yes to the port shrouded .60 AR covered six blade unit . This turbo's (GT30R) part no is 700382-12 and is sold without turbine housing . 704902-1 and -2 are the part no's for 1.06 and .82 AR exhaust housings . DO NOT FIT BORED OUT T3 or T04 exhaust housings as the nozzle section is different and does not work properly with the GT type turbine .
