Timmy G
i'm all for power to weight ratio for P platers, but up to 26 is pretty steep. i think it's a good policy and won't cost the govt much to implement. it's very easy for some of you guys to sit back and cry foul and vaguely suggest a magic solution to the problem of young drivers in fast cars doing stupid things, but come up with a real solution and one which won't cost a bucket to implement (like driver training). and also just kept in mind that the daily telegraph is a tabloid and it wants to shock you into buying it so it's probably an exaggeration (i haven't read the article yet). Warpspeed
Hey Sydneykid, I have lived in some pretty small flats at various times, but living in a post office box would be far too cramped for me. Let's be honest guys, young blokes like fast cars, and they like to drive them flat out from time to time. The trouble is that they are at some time going to lose control. It is one thing to frighten yourself to death by spearing into the weeds backwards in a Datsun 120Y flat out at 80Kmh, and quite another to hit a steel pole sideways at 200 Kmh. I was young once, and I used to thrash around, made lots of noise, hated the cops, had a few accidents too. As you get older you DO slow down and think a bit more about what you are doing. You can still thrash a low powered car, but the accident might then only be a little one. Put a P plater in a boosted GTR, the eventual prang is going to be far more spectacular. Allow young guys into high powered cars, but only after say two years of unblemished driving in a low powered car. That is, no speeding fines, and no prangs. It might take a long time for some to reach two straight clean years. It would have been pretty tough going for me when I first started driving. It might take a long time for some to reach two straight clean years. It would have been pretty tough going for me when I first started driving. crash research information shows that the chances survival of hitting a solid imovable object at anything over 70km'h is very low, so a datsun 120y into a powerpole at 80km'h is hardly going to be a little crash, further more many of these little econoboxes are still capable of high speeds, I had a dead stock Datsun 200b (L20B engine) that was capable of over 170km/h. most late model econnoboxes like corrollas and pulsars etc are still capable of over 200km/h, so if an idiot wants to do something stupid behind the wheel, they can still do it in a crap car. Thirdly, most P-platers drive crappy little cars anyway, they can't afford a proper high performance car and yet they still crash in unpricadented numbers, most crashes involving p-platers occur in little guttless cars or old shitboxes. And lastly, P-platers in victoria crash just as much as p-platers anywhere else in australia despite already having these restrictions in place. QUITE CLEARLY THEY DON'T WORK! Malecki
i've had my R33 GTST since i was 16, i learnt how to drive in it, never had any troubles, always respected my boundaries and the car's limits, and i think it's a bit harsh to throw this new rule on us, I AM DEFINATLEY AGAINST IT, MY SKYLINE IS MY LIFE! DLuded
i dont know if this has already been said because im simply too lazt to read all the posts i read an article in the newspaper that stated that p plater accidents and fatalities has significantly fallen in the last 10 years but the politiicans say nothing about that. it also said that the reason why there seems to be more accidents now is because there is more coverage on young drivers. also instead of p platers being issued for 1 year they are now issued for a minimum of 3 years Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/57082-young-drivers-face-fast-car-ban/page/6/#findComment-1121034 Share on other sites

Obakemono
DLuded - thats exactly right. Yet, due to the Daily Telegraph's antics, the government is gonna have to do something, and we're going to be paying the price. I personally won't be effected since i'm under, although only by like 0.1 but I'm still under on the p/w restrictions they're trying to implement. Even so i'm completely against it. It is simply ridiculous. As for the Daily Telegraph, I work in a newsagents, among other things, and I'll tell you the DT is one of the most crap filled, sensationalist, editorialised pieces of rubbish i've seen. It's all about shocks, scareing you into buying it. 78vbsle
"Put a P plater in a boosted GTR, the eventual prang is going to be far more spectacular."*****INSERT MINES_DATSUN COMMENT HERE***** Why? I use to drive a powerful V8 commodore back when I was on my P's, and I never crashed it, in fact I still own it. And for that matter my brother, my father and most my freinds all drove high powered cars on their P's too, they never crashed them either. And I'm sure many of the members on this forum are in the same boat. So why then do you assume that just because a P-plater drives a powerful car that they'll automatically crash it, and why make the equally ignorant assumption that just because a p-plater is in a crappy car that they will be safer. BAD DRIVERS CAUSE CRASHES, NOT HIGHPOWERED CARS!!! And just because they're a P-plater doesn't mean they're a bad driver. seraphyn_r33
yep agreed, its the driver not the car. The government cant realise that though. Quite frankly im fed up with this bullshit. 78vbsle
there are exemptions for people who already own a high powered car, so if you act quickly (as in the next few days), you should be able to apply for the exemption and still keep your skyline. racsov500
that DT article that GTRSRULE posted.. it says "The two new measures of power limits and passenger restrictions on drivers who have come to the attention of authorities, already raised as options to deal with rising youth carnage on the roads, have received support from P-plate forums and motoring groups over the past two weeks.
