my point is that if a japanese company buys one of these so called gems.....he would be out of his mind to sell it to someone in another country for a commision fee....a smart person would send it to another auction....

Reminds me of a friends car, a GTT that had a service sticker that said sumthing like 45,000 and the cluster said 30,000 :D

What a gem huh.....yeah right! Don't think for a second that they are any less dodgy that us!

My car had done around 70,000km when it got here (a GTT also) and it's in better nic than his plus I paid less due to the K's :cheers:

The e-mail reads exactlly like you'd expect from one dealer arguing they're better than any other dealer......at the end of they day they're all just used car salesmen, caveat emptor, 'nuff said.

Yeah I see a lot of ads for R34's where in the comments they mention worn steering wheels, seats etc etc on cars with 40,000Ks....hmmm I've got 140,000Ks and hardly any wear, these "low K" cars would be a worry for sure! When my car did have 40,000ks on it, it was like brand new.

So these other cars are either abused badly or had new speedos put in. Neither a good buy.

hmmm I'd better cancel the 1200km R34 V Spec II we just helped a customer buy from a nissan dealership in japan... might be wound back :D

relying on km's when buying an import is one of the stupidest things you could do. Along with relying on comments like "in excellent condition considering its age". get a mechanic's report on the car before you buy, you may waste $250 upfront gettin a mechanic to go all the way to some rural part of japan to check out your potetntial GTR, but save yourself $4000 upwards in repair bills when it lands by not buying a lemon.

Hell they even have a indepentent network of mechanics specially targetted to delivering thorough reports to cars that are available at the big auctions like USS Tokyo etc for that reason. They cost more than regular mechanics, but if you really wanted to you could get it done.

That said, my R32 came with 39000 k's on the clock, and logs of regular maintenance at a Nissan workshop up to a couple of months prior to me buying the car. My AE86 has done 450,000 km and is still goin strong :cheers:

I think a better way to put it is relying on K's alone is stupid. That with a check of interior and mechanics would be fine wouldn't you say?

But I could imagine people goign to the extent of changing steering wheels and drivers seats along with the cluster. In the end a mechanical is the only way.

As for opinions...your a dealer (your public profile says 'vehicle importer', same thing AFAIC), so that makes you totally objective doesn't it.....

As for my statement....I stand by it, as would any consumer advocate, so build a bridge.....

I went to go lok at a r34 around melbourne which claimed to have 20000kms for a very good price(31K). I go to check it out, using the tutorial of 'buying a skyline' i managed to find overspray on the back right back light(sign of a respray/accident). I also looked hard at the interior, the clock said 20000kms, the gear knob said about 200000lms, this thing had no leather left on it at all, that doesnt happen unless the car is driven either alot or driven hard. One wierd thing is that it had a momo airbag steering wheel and instead of the guage cluster there was a popup tv, he said they were factory options, could the whole dash have been replaced???? The seller was an importer too....i left straight away.

oh and you'd do well to steer clear of cars from JAD :D too many times do we see cars from auction houses with the auction report reading a good 20,000 k's more than they do after they've purchased them, and "prepped em" to advertise :cheers: must drive backwards from the auction houses or something :cheers:

The original thread is about odo,s with misleading KM, are you saying these vehicles all have gen KM? or did you once have a traumatic childhood episode involving a car dealer?

Yes but $17,000 car has been thrashed within a inch of his life and is proberly two half a cars and had the clock wound back 3 times.

$25,000 car should be a straight tidy, standard car and with auction papers, if not dont buy simple as that. The new rules say a vehicle is to be standard simple as that, most people I know look at a car just from Japan and a car that has been here for 3 years and most will want a standard one.

If you can find a straight 80,000 klm 96 GTS-t manual in the paper with all the fruit for $17,000 tell me and I will buy it.

Dont take offence but I started this Thread about a dealer explaining what he thinks about klm's on a car and how he explains it to the customer, what people think a car is worth is a personal choice, if the cars in the Trading post were that good we wouldnt have a import industry.

I wasnt agreeing with what you said about prices and the trading post or what you think about dealers this is nothing to do with the thread, not all dealers are "The Anti-christ". I can bring cars in my self like any trained monkey but I still buy off local dealers, I just bargin with them and never pay the sticker price.

How about the 1991 Turbo Soarer that a yard advertised as a Genuine 10,000 km car, presents and drives like new, that works out at 714 klm a year you would have to be game to belive it.

This is the point Regan is trying to get across, the cars come from a DEALER in another country so you should NEVER believe the klm's and if you are proved wrong so be it.

Trust me people...they do drive and like you and I they like to enjoy their performance cars.

When someone sends me an email to source a car, I always tell them up front.

Alot of cars are wound back even if the importer didn't do it...it's common over here unless there is an UP TO DATE logbook. But generally this is done to old cars over 6-10 years old so you can bet all those 89-95 Skylines and Silvias are wound back.

Generally cars over here will do 10,000-25,000km per year. If the reserve price on a car at the Auction is generally higher you can ensure the kilometres are genuine.  

Ask for an Auction grading report from any import dealer in Aust and some may hestiate to show you. As the kilometres are recorded when inspected at the Auction and how much the car was finally sold off for.  You make the judgement on common sense. Old cars are bought cheap and the kilometres may reflect this but one would not care less on a car bought for peanuts.  Newer cars bought dirt cheap, with less then 50,000 km...it's your call.

Thanks funkymonkey for that tip about JAD.Do they send many cars to Aust?
