thanks for the advice guys, its a tough decision to make.

so so so many options.

even the hks gt-rs unit looks promising.

did u say HKS GT-RS??

check this out, once again, it's basically the same core with the option of the 48 or 56 trim compressor wheel

SR20 is a 4 cylinder with approx 500cc cylinders firing 180degrees appart . RB20 is a six cylinder with approx 400cc cylinders firing I think 120 degrees appart . Bore /stroke and rod/stroke ratios would make a difference as would porting/valve sizes and cam profiles .

so the sr flows more air ?

SR is a totaly different engine to a RB,

4 cylinder 2ltr - SR20DET

6 cylinder 2ltr - RB20DET

They are a total different engine in the way the operate, their best use would be for drift as they are renown for the fast & agressive reving. Their not smooth like a RB. But i must say SR's can be very quick with little modification's as their only in a light silvia body :)

Due to the SR's snappy response we have a one with a 700hp GT3540 on it and it has little to no lag. - Very surprising for a small engine with such a large turbo.

But if you were to put one of them on a RB20 it would be lag monster !

:)

Hey, that not quite fair.... they are not just lag monsters... I'm in the middle of upgrading my rb20 and its been ok so far - I havn't actually changed the turbo yet though :) I'm chasing 200krws.

Any recomendation for something with little lag that can do this? When I say 200, I don't mean "oh I think an RB25 can do that".. I mean a REAL 200 rwkws.

the .63 ar gt30 has been used with great success on several sr20s i know of and isnt to laggy .

SR20 - your talking a different motor entirely there. This is RB20, remember they aint as decent as an SR20, they are second only to the mighty RB20E lol.

in a box , what sought of power at the wheels do these turbos deliver on an rb25, do you have any examples that you have already seen? im quite keen on the idea of a gt30 turbo with internal wastegate.

I can tell you for a fact, with the Ext gate turbo - 600HP .82 rear housing my car makes 270rwkw @ 16psi, and its a nice sloid graph.

You'd think the integral gated ones wouldnt be all that much different as long as thier rating is the same

Remember the bottom line, STREET CAR or TRACK/DRAG car, there is a bit of a difference

700HP on an RB25 can be fine , but you aint got stock cams or anything like that to make it half useful. 700 IMO as Morrie said also is too big for RB25's for street use that is.

back to RB20, i still reckon anything less than 450HP for a fast streeter, anything more and it's going to go backwards

Thems fighting words...i can see a rematch in the new year:)

I look at what is RB20 owners do to our engines, and my god we are a dodgy bunch:( We never do the full job. Me for instance, right now im running around with an RB25 exhaust housing on my turbo, no wonder im not making 1 bar until about 4600rpm:(

Other RB20s i have seen who run GT30 etc dont have injectors etc etc.

Show me a std RB20 with all the support gear, a well tuned ECU with a good turbo like a 450hp GT28, and it would be interesting to see the results.

Anyone know a place in Melb that sells Trust exhaust housings, the place where i was going to get mine wants $550 for one:(

I agree with Ash though, on a std RB20, i dont think you should venture must past a 450hp turbo.

when i do get my car up and running this is what i will have going for it:

hks exhaust mani (already mock mounted)

GT30R with .63exhaust a/r (mounted on manifold)

hks std wastegate (to be purchased)

550cc RC engineering injectors (have them but waiting to install)

RIPS intake mani (pending purchase)

custom FMIC setup (looking into cores)

HKS cams and gears 264/264 (looking for a decent price)

greddy emanage and e-01 (had it from my old setup)

when all is said and done i should be looking at 300whp or so on moderate boost and perhaps 350-400 on high boost.

i will most def post my results when im done tho

Donā€™t forget the valve springs champ :P (especially for higher boost)

haha very tru.

the next engine i build up will have all the stuff for it to rev out to 8k reliably.

when i had the engine in my s13 i rarely took it past 6.5k so i shouldnt have too many problems with my engine.

i think that some one in japan had the engine either rebuilt or had a new headgasket put on it as the head is immaculately clean on the inside and there was a new waterpump and timing belt on the engine when i got it.

ive got a buddy with a ca18 with the hks 264/264 9mm cams and his engine was beat to absolute shit but it still handles those cams very well on stock springs.

good call tho, next rb will proly be a stroker rb20.

I had an RB20 with a Garrett GT30 (0.82ar turbine housing) utilising a tial external wastegate on the standard (modified) manifold. For me, the boost threshold was way to high for a street driven car. I had full boost by 4400 and it was fun, but you had to thrash the guts out of it all the time. My friend had GCG Turbos modify a GT30 to take a 0.63ar housing so he could use the standard actuator set up on his RB20. This was only slightly better, as he had full boost by 4000.

Id definately explore other (smaller) options if the car is a street driver. Ive since put an RB26 in and am toying with the idea of using the GT30 on it, although i think it will be too small.

Having said all this, ive got the abovementioned 3000km old GT30 for sale if u want.

0414972596.

good to hear responses from ppl who have run this setup.

was your friend running stock cams or aftermarket ones?

if so what cams and what kind of cam timing.

i hope to get the full boost spool to around 3.5-3.7k if possible, so input is greatly appreciated.

Your kidding, right?

There are two BIG problems with SR's, rockers and alloy block. By the time you spend the money fixing those properly, I could have build 2 or 3 good RB's. Shoot I would much rather have a CA than an SR, an RB is in another league entirely. :P

has anyone tired twin turbos on an rb20 as if you are worried about lag and turbo efficience ,is a well known fact (since about the 1930 or something) that the clearer the exhaust pulse signal(ie less cylinders per turbo) the faster spool up and more efficient the turbo is (Forced Induction by Gramham Bell)

a couple of std gtr turbos could be a good combo (there cheap to try as many are sold) just stay below 1 bar and if you fitted them and like it you would have a great selection of possible upgrades down the road

Just food for thought nothing else

Currently on the R31 forums there is a R31 for sale with RB20 (R32) with Modified GTR exhaust manifolds and turbos.

Modifications:

Twin turbo (gtr turbos and exhaust manifolds)

Microtech LT8 with handset

Double dump pipes of each turbo

Large FMIC (gtr size)

2 bov plumbed back

3in high flow exhaust (new cat.) chrome magnaflow exhaust tip

High quality water and oil lines for turbos

700hp rated in tank fuel pump

Malpassi fuel reg

"Makes full boost round 4-5000rpms running bout 10 psi."
