Hi all i have a r33 gtst and i have the unichip after market computer and it works wonders you wouldn't even know the difference in gear changes and it brings a heap of power too its realy good

how much of this could be controlled buy tuning the wolf , would some wolf installs be better than others ? or is it a matter of its just not possible because of hardware.

perhaps a manual conversion will come sooner rather than later  

i am enjoying the lazyness of the auto though

arkon the wolf cannot control the auto ecu........its not possible becuase of the hardware apparently..........unless steve would like to step in and fill us all in on a possible method?? I have pm'ed him and asked a few times on the forums but never got an answer........

Yeh often wondered about unichip.. It is just a plug in with lots more options yes?

Wolf and Powerfc will NEVER work properly with the automatic box no matter how much tunning is done, there is no code for the gear change logic.

Unichip sounds promising though, but does it allow you to run larger injectors and Z32AFM? If not then we are back to where we started.

Im slowly building an autobox up to put in once the power is ready, but theres a few tuning/compatability issues to sort out first

The truth is: The only way to tune the Auto ECU without affecting the gearbox and its gearchanging is to use piggybacks.

Which only allows for at the most 270rwkw, but this assumes you can get larger injectors and Z32AFM to work.

Some good news is that the S15 Manual Injectors are identicle to RB25 injectors but the S15 are 440cc instead of 370cc :D This would make them ALOT easier to control and tune compared to 550cc injectors. :D

knore i think the best piggy back is the e-manage.......in that other thread about the GT30 turbo's someone there has a e-manage on a gt30 equipped auto....they are in bris too.......perhaps it might be an idea to PM them for more details

I was always weary about the coil pack issues with the ignition harness on the e-manage, and becuase i couldnt find anyone with a auto and e-manage i decided not to be the test mule and blow coils..........

where you send him you list of mods and he sends you like 3 chips to try and you send them back or some shit like that .

but it means the hardware is possible to remap ? ?

They fixed the coil thing earlier this year.

im looking at some serious 300rwkw mods eventually so I dont think an emanage will do me . ill just have to leave the stock ecu in until I can get it converted if worst comes to worst

I was looking into this topic as well and I’ve fount that there's about 11 wires going between the two computers for the communication between them.

The auto computer constantly monitors things like speed, rev & throttle among other things and based on the input it gets adjusts the gear. Also, at the same time it sends data back to the main computer when it intends to get into action so that the main computer can re-adjust its settings before the gear change takes place. So the auto computer doesn't just receive data and acts on it, it actually sends and receives data for proper operation.

If the after market computer is not made to communicate to the auto computer it will not change the gears as it was meant to.

So it comes to if you are willing to sacrifice the smooth ride over the performance and maybe less life out of the gearbox.

Abo Bob – did you change anything else when you got your remap? Tune, timing?

FWIW, Unichip and Emanage are both sensor benders ala SAFC / SITC... This is why they don't effect the autos operation... The standard ECU is still there...

Remap is a good idea but limits any further tuning to support new mods unless your willing to pay for a new chip and the guy who does them is still around...

Hi guys, I am very interested in this thread as it is relevant to the Stagea.

I have down loaded the code from an auto ecu and compared it to a manual ecu and I can tell you there is 3 times as much code in the auto ecu. These are not maps for fuel or ignition or boost, it is code to enable the engine ecu to control power (torque) on gearchanges. There is code for going uphill, down hill, flat, accelerating, decelerating, cruising, powering, turning with power steering, 4wd, abs, aircon, electrical load etc etc. All of these things affect the gearchanges and therefore have to be programmed for.

This is not tuning the fuel and ignition timing and building a boost correction table. I don't know anyone, outside of the auto manufacturers, who can do this. Plus I have yet to see an aftermarket ECU that has the capacity to handle this sort of code. This is why Apexi haven't made a Power FC for auto Skylines, they most likely don't have the expertise and would have to charge way too much for the auto PFC to make it worthwhile.

So my 20 cents worth, use a piggy back to tune the fuel and maybe one for the ignition but it has to be a "simplistic" style that doesn't totally override the standard ECU timing, just moves it a few degrees. That combination works welll up to around 260 rwkw and I have yet to see a chipped standard ECU do any better. That also happens to be around my rule of thumb limit for the standard RB25 internals.

There are limits to what you can map in a standard (chipped) ecu, the maps don't extend far enough, they are not calibratable, there is no ability to change correction factors (water temp, air temp, boost etc), not all maps are stand alone, they are linked and when you change one you can easily get an unwanted effect in another. They have a limit, and I have yet to see that limit exceed what can be achieved from a pair of piggy backs. So I would never count on a chipped ecu to deliver much better results

If you are doing an upgrade on the internals for power in excess of that, then I strongly suggest a non electronic auto is the go. We have used Hugo's boxes in the past and they handle double that power easily. Either that or do a manual conversion, either way will be cheap compared to what you spend on the engine anyway.

On the Stagea I am using an SAFC first, if I find problems with ignition timing I will find an old SITC and use that as well. There is always a balance between bending the AFM signals for fuel (to lean it out) and ignition (it advances) at the same time. It's a compromise tune every time. But I will be happy with doubling the standard power output at the wheels, so I am not looking for huge power.

If the std injectors don't quite make it, then a Nismo adj fuel pressure regulator should stretch them far enough. If not a set of S15 SR20DET injectors will do the job.

At 1.1 bar, I reckon 200 4wkw should get the Stagea moving along. I have seen quite a few R33 GTST autos handle a bit more than 200 rwkw, so the Stagea with a big tranmission cooler should do it OK. But I will test it thoroughly before I lock it in.

Aftermarket ECUs all effect autos but we have had no real problems.

Sensor benders also effect autos if you need to make large changes as the load values etc are substantially altered and do alter the Autos performance.

Worst case we have had is like a mild shift kits been fitted.

this thread has been excellent so far as its practicaly told me a lot of what i need to know as my next steps in the car mod saga (when does it stop) is aftermarket management.

It looks like an safc II is the go and tune it correctly (for timing issues as well).

Also for the oil coolers on the r33 auto for example, what would be their limit (as i changed the one originally on there with a new simialr sized unit). Because if i were to get 190rwkw would the the std oil cooler be enough for long lasting reliability or should i get a larger, better one?

Anyone with any experience in this matter as the figure of 190rwkw would be plently for me as i only would go drags every now and then, otherwise its just an everyday road car.

Proabably should get a slightly larger fuel pump as well as my car aint getting any newer at those power levels.

    • Mate you saved be from dying in the Perth summer. AC wasn't changing direction and just going into diagnostics mode fixed it. You're a legend and I would shout you a beer if I could!
    • Unfortunately effort gone to waste, you will have substantial issues with how the manifold and wastegate have been integrated. You would be so much better off with a modified stock manifold like this: https://hypergearturbos.com/product/rb25detexgatedmanifold/   OR literally just getting a off the shelf Sinco or 6Boost manifold as myself and others have mentioned.  
    • Yuck. But it's kinda the same principle, moving timing around to make car run bad but sound good.... I went for a more spirited tuning drive to iron out a few things. Car no longer stalls, and it loved to dip RPM low when you clutch in. After tuning this (and the 4-5 tables that HPTuners/LS1 OEM ECU wants for idle air correction) it's now behaving somewhat normal. All expected because there's a new TB, new Intake manifold and that new TB which is 102mm vs 78... has an entirely different IAC passage which is smaller because ????? Unfortunately at this point I went to make further fine tuning changes to avoid it flaring up, you know... _tuning_ the HPTuners dongle died. Well to be more accurate - The USB cable died in a fashion that anyone who has ever charged a phone will recognize. After the app demanding I resync it 50 or so times (which all 'succeeded' but all failed) the device does not want to sync and I've logged a ticket with support to see if it's fixable. US Support said it was a 'storage issue' but after removing the SD card inside it and formatting it/fixing it the issue does persist. Unfortunately usually the fix is "Turn in your old dongle and pay $700 for the upgraded one" it's cheaper because I get some free licence credits I unfortunately don't need. However I'm 10 minutes down the road from HP Tuners AUS/VCM so at least I won't need to post it, and logged a new ticket for support over here. Definitely drives different. My SOTP dyno believes it's probably making 310-320kw instead of the 280 before.  It scrambles for traction a little now whereas it previously different. It drives like a bigger cam car up top even though the cam is smaller, likely due to the cam not being advanced 6 degrees. The timing is deliberately low and the fuel is very rich so who knows if this will improve on the dyno. It may, imperceptably. Also funny is removing the pineapples definitely makes the car squat more and axle tramp less. So this behavior of having more top end, squatting more, and scrabbling for traction more makes me think = more power. But I could have just been sitting on the threshold of that kind of behavior before. Time will tell if my butt dyno is calibrated right. I need the exhaust leaks fixed before dyno tune for obvious AFR related reasons - I repositioned the pipes but I'm not confident it's fully sealed even if it is better. At least the car does drive around while I cannot tweak/tune it for now. And I have aircon again. medium success!
