have contacted Caltex regarding the release of Vortex 98 as their website mentioned that NSW was distributing 98 and other states would follow in the new year.

The dialogue is as follows;

Will Caltex Vortex 98 be available in Western Australia in the near future?

Regards

Rick

Rick,

At this stage, no release date has been set for Vortex 98 in WA.

Bruce

So that means it will be released?

Rick,

I can't give you a definite answer one way or the other at this

stage. It will depend on how supply to the other States goes. As you

probably know, there is only one Refinery in WA, and it is not owned by

Caltex, so we cannot produce our own in WA, it would have to be shipped

around the coast, so it will have to depend on how much supply of the

product we have.

Bruce

Somehow I don't think we will see 98 here and will be at the mercy of BP,

bummer

i use mobil synergy. thats 98 octane. anyone kno how it compares against bp ultimate??

Had a look at the Mobil site and found Synergy 8000 is their 98 RON fuel. The article below is from their website.

The Mobil Synergy Fuel System is available at selected Mobil service stations in South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. The Synergy Fuel System will be progressively rolled out to other states in Australia. See this site for more details.

If it is advertised as Synergy 8000 then it will be the 98 RON fuel. They also have Synergy 6000 and 2000 which are premium and regular unleaded respectively.

Just did another search on the Mobil site for outlets in W.A. that have Synergy 8000 and there were zero listed. Because BP is the only oil refinery in WA, it would seem that it is not going to be viable for the others to ship it over from the east. Only a huge demand for 98 would change that and that's not likely to happen for a long time.

right lets stuff you all up.

The BP refinery in Kwinana is the only one in WA. Due ot WA's boutique fuel laws its the only one allowed to produce fuel for WA. All fuel in WA is suppose to come from that refinery. The other companies buy it and add there own little odds and ends to make there premium unleaded and vortex etc.

Shipping fuel from the eastern states would cost more and the fuel would not meet our boutique fuel laws so couldn't be used unless it is refined to match the fuel produced at BP's kwinana refinery.

Yes this unfortunately is true. I used to work with a lady who's other half used to work for the refinery ...... she told me .... i lived in denial about it.

To add insult to injury, BP98 made in Kwinnana is sold cheaper in the Eastern States than it is sold in Perth (or even Kwinnana). We actually subsidise some of the transport costs to the Eastern States!

Yeah, and shipping that grade of fuel from the east would definitely not be cost effective.

I noticed in the email Caltex sent me that he stated that they can not produce their own (98) in W.A., I am thinking that because Ultimate is a very clean fuel, it may be refined a lot more than the other fuels and perhaps BP will not sell this particular grade to the others, thereby keeping the whole 98 market to themselves.

I do recall hearing or reading somewhere that cheap crap fuel is brought in from Singapore. It was mentioned that some of the cheap fuel outlets use it. Correct me if I'm mistaken.

FYIW,

Synergy 8000 is the best fuel IMO. I dont have a 'line yet, but mates with 180s will ping on anything other than synergy 8000...actually they havnt tried BP ultimate yet...but the old BP stuff was crap, optimax is crap, vortex is crap...

I ride motorbikes, and the same goes with them, BP ultimate and Synergy 8000 are the ONLY choice for dirt bikes. Optimax runs absolute crap in everything I have known, except one mate with an XR6 turbo swears by it (he's the only one i know)

Optimax screws up dirt bikes sumpin chronic - sumpin to do with carbi instead of injection.

    • don't know anyone in this thread, but i just found it, read the entire thing in a few hours, realized greg is still posting progress, and just have to say, this is awesome. it looks awesome. 100% right about the Uras kit making it a pain to get on hoists...have the same kit on my 34 and it takes six 2x4s and race ramps to do it without taking parts off. this reminds me exactly of this thread. https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/build-projects-and-project-cars/r63-amg-the-unicorn-of-my-destruction/110824/page8/
    • The only way to make that better is to weld on some bozozoku tips up past window height and roll with the cool kids.
    • I'd want an even MORE side on view. More or less you want to make sure the outlet is actually square with the outermost part of the bumper. Or you end up getting soot all over your bumper from your hektik exhaust. In any case, it looks pretty close. I think the way to fix this is probably more of an overhaul at an exhaust specialty shop if you want tips that are rounded off or sit nicely with the bumper but have proper clearance and don't move - Probably more of a redesign than a quick fix. I've pencilled in my own exhaust with its own various problems, pinholes, PITA fitment, and other issues and can see myself going to a shop and saying "JUST DO THIS BUT BETTER?"  Which is gonna work better than any more small fixes. I'm gonna chime in here officially with "from an outsider perspective this exhaust looks fine so this is self OCD probably" (which I also suffer from)
