Ok, got the S-AFC tuned, and picked up an extra 15kw and 60Nm at the wheels. Now, this is weird because the power seemed to be quite low (166kw after tune) but Mark said that it was quite a good amount of power and that usually the other Skylines he tunes come up with around 145kw. But also, the torque seems to be monumental, it was around 640Nm!

The thing is he did the dyno runs in 3rd gear, because he said in 4th you run into the speed limiter. Am I right in thinking that having a higher ratio (3rd gear) would increase your torque and decrease your power, when compared to a lower ratio (4th)? It seems like that to me anyway, when considering the figures and Mark's comments about them. Also considering that the stock torque of an R33 GTS-t is under 300Nm, there's no way that I'm running double that right now.

The car still blows a bit of black smoke, but that's because he deliberately left it running a bit rich when I have the hammer down so that it doesn't ping on really hot days. The PowerFC as far as I know has temperature compensation so it can be eventually gotten rid of once I can afford that.

Next step is going to be a custom dump pipe, with dyno runs before and after (he said he likes to show the customer where their money is going - big thumbs up for that!) and eventually, either new intercooler plumbing or a new intercooler (my current fmic is very average).

Watching my car get sideways on the dyno was a damned good sight indeed :)

great results, but its a little bit of a shame they are in 3rd gear...!

wot a/f ratio was the car running stock, and wot was it running after mark tuned the safc?

seat of the pants, how does it feel?

how much did mark charge you for install and tune?

i'm going to see mark tomorrow morning to enquire about a few mods. hills apparently do a front mount kit for $1800 that is a micks metalcraft fabrication - can anyone comment on this kit? this is fairly reasonable value considering a jap kit will be close to 2k depending on who you take it to...

am also looking at a dump pipe and front pipe, i dont know whats out there at the moment. apparently www.arrowdiff.com.au have dump pipes for about $300, CES racing have a good range apparently (probably abit pricier) and you've got the normal jap range for about $300 + freight...

The A/F ratio varies, deliberately. Mark kept it in the high 11's in the high RPM range because he said he was worried about detonation. He said he could have pushed it into the 12's, but with the last tweak he did there wasn't enough of a power gain to warrant increasing it further. I trusted his judgement on the matter :) But on the most part, until it hits around 100kph in 3rd gear (whatever RPM that is) it's low to mid 12's. Originally it was mostly high 11's and heading towards low 11's at the top end. I'll scan the dyno chart and upload it this weekend.

Cost was only for the tune, because I'd installed it myself a couple of weeks ago. That was $140, I don't know what he'd charge for installation.

The dump pipe he uses is built by him so it's fully custom. He talked about running an external wastegate as well, I think I might go with that, but it depends on how much extra it costs.

I don't actually know why the dump pipe is such a separate item from the front pipe, to me it looks like they should be the one and the same piece. I guess it must have something to do with the wastegate.

My car goes into Hills this Monday for the works:

Turbo

Boost Control

FMIC

ECU

Injectors

Custom Plenum & Throttle Body

Custom Fuel System

Front , Dump and Hi Flow Cat

I'll let y'all know how it goes - I'm trusting that i'll end up with a weapon - I've been waiting for 6 weeks for (a) Parts and Worksop availability and (B) When I can put the car in. I know it will be worth the wait - I'm just hoping I can show it all off at 2Rismo's Dyno day next weekend !!

BTW - Anyone who thinks that they are getting work done at Hills next week is mistaken - That week is reserved for me !!:) :) :):D :D :D :D

I'm thinking PowerFC + my AVC-R now.

T.

Have a look at my dyno readout. I was actually mistaken, the torque was 641 when power was at its peak, but the peak torque occurs earlier and is over 700 :)

Anyway this is why I asked the question about it being in 3rd gear rather than 4th.

640Nm is more than what a supercharged Jaguar does

Quite Frankly, thats because the dyno run was done in 3rd gear. If I did a dyno run in 2nd gear, I'd probably make 800Nm+

The gears/ratios act as torque mutiplier...

  • 1 month later...

Any news after ur upgrades Brendan ?

Im wanting to get the front pipes of my car done and after not being able to find anyone decent in my area i think im gonna have to travel to Hills and wait 8mths to get it looked at.

Damnit i got the money now grr

Hey Guys,

Yep got most of the mods done, just the hi-flow cat and final tune to go.

Results so far:

Before : 150rwkw

After : 220 rwkw on low boost (14 PSI)

Tomorrow it goes back to get the cat and final dyno tune, now that everything is run in, we'll be able to do high (18 PSI) boost dyno runs/tunes.

Expecting 255-260rwkw prolly can get more, but poof goes the head gasket......

PS - 1 day after I got the car back (220 rwkw) I had to change the clutch cause she slipped when >4000rpm and loaded up. THe std clutch just can't take the HP.

I won't post the costs - but if you like the figures and have seen under my bonnet - (and you can wait for the work to be done) then go to Hills and tell Mark that you know about my car and I'm sure he will look after you - Yes, the wait was worth it.... And I have more to come........

Cheers,

    • Yeah kids certainly add a whole another dimension to your life.  Life ceases to be about you and more about them for a while!  And I wouldn't have it any other way.  I love watching them play sport and make new friends along the way. Wow, sounds like your mate is a good guy to know!!!  He's got some serious toys in the toy box!  Yes it would be lovely to be able to do stuff to your car without getting all tied up in boring shit like how to pay for it!!  I would describe my spending style as "aggressively spontaneous and logical but regrettable purchasing"....  That will hopefully make no sense at all which would be appropriate given that is how I buy stuff.  I'll decide at the drop of a hat that I'm buying something expensive, research the living shit out of it for 2 days straight then go out and buy it.  Then I'll have instant buyers remorse for 2 days which generally passes by the time it turns up on the front step!  If I'm feeling ballsy sometimes I'll tell my wife.  Other times it just makes its way silently passed the house and out the back to the shed, never to be spoken of again...
    • My extinguisher mounted like this unscrewed a little (Maybe from the chair sliding forward) and dumped a bit of white on my mats. I'll need to get a more narrow one for future.
    • I totally couldn't do the whole kids taking up my life thing! 😮 I find it bad enough doing 45 hours in 4 days, and then fitting normal adulting life into the other 3 with no kids! As for my mates race cars, they're AMG C63 setup for production racing. The original is what has just been stripped and a brand new shell built. The original is then going away to have some panels straightened, then it will be put back together again. Then there's a third that will shortly head off to have a roll cage put in, then build it up too. And potentially a fourth to be built too... Oh, and he has two Renault Clio D class production cars, ha ha. And when he's not racing them in the Australians and QLD production championships, he's been racing one of Chaz Mostert's Lamborghini's in GT4. They just won GT4 at the 12 hour in the Lambo. We're pushing to finish the new AMG as it has its first round (and potentially its first shakedown/outing) in under w weeks for Round one of QPC, and that round is really the shakedown to make sure it's all good for the Bathurst 6 hour, which I'll be at too. Ha ha ha Working on my project is different to his, I slowly tinker and work ways to make things happen on a shoe string budget. Hes in a good position that he has a massive workshop full of parts and tools, ha ha. He also looks after me. When his air compressor died, he just needed it working, so bought himself a new one and gave the old to me. Sand blaster unit too, and a 20t pressing. And pretty much all the shelving in my shed too as he upgraded all of his (the stuff he gave me is the expensive black Bunnings heavy duty stuff)!   I enjoy working on his stuff. No decision paralysis, and anything that's needed parts wise is just there. Plus, then I get to be hands on at the track in real racing, not just club day stuff.
    • I know which one I'd prefer to have in my garage, and which one I'd actually drive as intended
    • Yeah mate, no probs. Just swap the email addresses?
