I'm getting my S-AFC tuned at Hills next week, for $140. I had also rung up Croydon, and they wanted $300! :eek1: Does anyone know why Croydon costs so much more? Since this is only an S-AFC I'm more concerned with cost than end results, but Hills have a good reputation and they use a dyno so I can't see why Croydon costs over double. Can someone explain why?

If Croydon genuinely is better (eg they can get me an extra 10kw) then I might go with them when I can afford my Power FC. But if there is no difference other than price I may as well stick to Hills.

I really can't tell you if there would be a difference between to two places. Croydon charge the way they do coz they are good at what they do and know it.

They have lots of customers so can set any price they like and there are still heaps of customers.

It's not right but thats how things work.

JimX,

Tell Mark that you know me (Christian) and he should look after you. He does fantastic work and I recommend Hills to everybody, they are the only guys who touch my cars (and I am going to start taking my GF's Mirage up there too).

you can't go wrong mate!

Christian

Thanks for the info guys ;)

I'm kind of thinking that it's a roll-on effect with Croydon. They charge a lot and everyone is happy with them, so that makes more people go there because they think they must be the absolute best because they charge so much, etc. I'm not doubting the quality of Croydon, but it's hard to understand how they can be *twice* as good, even when compared to a workshop with a good rep like Hills.

But anyway, I'll see how I go with Hills, should be pretty good. It's kinda funny that I'm going there, because through no reason other than pure coincidence I also bought my cold air box from UAS, and gotten my motorcycle repaired at Castle Hill Motorcycles, all 3 of which are at 2A Victoria Ave! My one stop motoring shop :D

Out of interest can someone tell me why Hills Motorsports aren't in the White Pages? Not on the website anyway (I don't have a phone book handy). Someone told me about them and I couldn't find the phone number so I thought they must have gotten the name wrong or something. But since then I found websites with links and stuff and got their phone number that way.

Although if I had been looking carefully enough I could have gotten it from Prank's sig :)

Well, since I had to book my car in almost 2 weeks ahead, I guess they have all the work they need and don't need to be in the white pages. L33t mechanic!

I find it funny that UAS referred me to Silverwater Automotive instead of Hills. Must have some direct competition going on there or something.

The guy who runs hills, didn't he used to be the head mechanic @ UAS?

NFI. That could be the reason why they didn't refer me to them though, if they parted on sour terms.

When I was trying to find someone to tune my PowerFC, I nearly suffered a heart-attack and a lung collapse when they said anywhere between 400 and 600.

But they know their stuff and they've got the reputation. You cannot go wrong.

    • Ha ha ha, mine loves to spend, all on the dogs (they're our kids, and her spending would likely rival that of some people raising children!) the only benefit is, her spending is tax deductible as she runs a business in the dog industry 😛 The above all means she can spend race car budget quicker than I can. 😛 That and a lot of the things I want are very expensive, and I can be a bit "you want how much for that?!" And at other times overly impulsive. Or I start the w days of research, get to day 1.5 and get really annoyed that no one will advertise actual specifics and it's just marketting BS and I go "well, now I don't want anything to do with that now!" Also I hate paying lots of money for something I can make from $50 in materials. Then I get the shits halfway through making things and wonder why others who just buy parts have more fun... 😛
    • Their 240Z with the RB26 would be a real nice thing to have in a garage to come out for an occasional weekend cruise It's such a cool thing in so many ways Sadly, we have a blue 240Z shell that I walk past every day, just sitting outside a shed at work, it has been slowly disintegrating and falling apart into the ground for the last few years, the owner cannot be found, and I am unable to "claim it" I've been told by work and the RMS, the rust in the body is excessive though, and it has had most of the salvageable stuff, like panels, trim and switch gear stripped off it over the last year or two, work keeps threatening to put it in one of our metal scrap bins, I wish they did though, as it makes Mark sad walking past it
    • Good tips, I like it! 😂😂 My wife is a LOT more frugal than me so it's only me we need to worry about! A splurge to her is buying 2 pairs of socks in one visit at Kmart!
    • Haha, the appropriate response to the question "Is this new?" is "I've had this for a while.". With the unspoken small print that a while may be the time since this morning or five years ago   And to be fair I learned that from the best, i.e. my wife. Because it goes both ways.
    • Yeah kids certainly add a whole another dimension to your life.  Life ceases to be about you and more about them for a while!  And I wouldn't have it any other way.  I love watching them play sport and make new friends along the way. Wow, sounds like your mate is a good guy to know!!!  He's got some serious toys in the toy box!  Yes it would be lovely to be able to do stuff to your car without getting all tied up in boring shit like how to pay for it!!  I would describe my spending style as "aggressively spontaneous and logical but regrettable purchasing"....  That will hopefully make no sense at all which would be appropriate given that is how I buy stuff.  I'll decide at the drop of a hat that I'm buying something expensive, research the living shit out of it for 2 days straight then go out and buy it.  Then I'll have instant buyers remorse for 2 days which generally passes by the time it turns up on the front step!  If I'm feeling ballsy sometimes I'll tell my wife.  Other times it just makes its way silently passed the house and out the back to the shed, never to be spoken of again...
