hey fellas.

got a quick q.

now that i have installed my new boost gauge and bleed valve, I am interested to know what others experiences have been with their boost settings.

I set it to peak at 0.8bar and it does this 98% of the time - i was aiming for around 11-12 psi.

I took if for a spin last night and i noticed that twice now in cooler weather it will occasionaly wind up to just under 1bar. I am guessing this is the spiking issue I have heard some of you talk about in the past from bleed valves.

My Q. is should I be setting the boost lower so that it only ever peaks out at .8 and so would 98% of the time run to around .7? Should I keep it the same and accept there will be the occasional spike?

1 bar equals about 14.5psi right... So its probably peaked to about 14psi 2 or 3 times so far.

cheers peeps

You probably don't wanna run 14psi too often with the stock turbo and cooler.

I'd go for better safe than sorry, and wait till you upgrade the turbo and cooler before pushing 1bar.

Does it go much better with the increased boost?

it certainly feels quicker when it winds up! Haven't really had a chance to stretch its legs on a highway or anything yet.... stupid suburb 50km/hr zones...

So you think i should wind it back a tad... hmmm

anyone else had this happen?

You dont want to be running 14psi or so for too long. If its spiking to only that then its probably not a big problem. However they reckon you can lose a psi or two thru the stock cooler, so it COULD be running 16psi or more when the guage is spiking to 14psi. Also the gauge if its moving fast could go too far, like it gets thrown too far, then it settles back down.

i think a few of your misread what I wrote -

it has spiked to just under 1 bar twice. both times under heavy acceleration in cold weather.

it runs between 11 - 12psi 99% of the time. - I am NOT running 14psi as standard.

In any case I am going to wind it back a smidgen to 10-11 just in case till it have done some other stuff.

cheers for the replies

oh and riveside have you seen a gauge bounce the needle higher under quick acceleration? I had wondered this too - if it was just a bit of extra movement in the needle...

ive had mine on 14psi for the drags. with a GFB bleed valve but ive had it dynoed at this psi before i did it to see if it was safe. Have u done yours yet kursed?..

What did you get 1/4 mile?

A dyno run won't be able to tell you if your turbo is going to dump its exhaust wheel, nor will it tell you if the car will ping on a hot day.

no i haven't... several people on this board told me it was unneccessary, but some did say it was safer to do so. I really don't hammer my car, maybe once a week i might give it a squirt for a minute or two thats it (and thats at night when i need a drive to clear the mind), otherwise its cefiro in peak hour down pacific highway... on that note i have seen 2 white ceffies booting round my area, one was driven by a 50+ yr old white haired dude!

ahhaha

yeah i know.. about the other factors that come into play. But hey how else u gonna go measure if its safe or not.

I ran a 14.2 on 13 psi.. but its didnt hold too well and dropped to 12 after first 5 sec stupid bleed valves. Had a shit 60 footer time.

Few things I noticed on mine. If I ease on the boost it hits 12psi and stays there. If I boot it, its smooth (but real fast) to 15psi, then drops back to 12psi and stays there, change gears its 12psi again. So I think its just a cheap non water filled gauge.

With the boost I had mine on 14psi in winter (with a bit of a cold air set up) I thought it was a tad unsafe because at the time I didnt have a adj fuel pressure reg, so I put it back down to 13psi and found it went faster. I have since got a fpr, and lowered the boost, I find I now get REALLY good fuel economy, where as 13psi I didnt. Strange but hey.

BTW Im also running the stock cooler.

funny everyone always says keep it below 14psi.... i ran my R32 on 14psi for over a year... all i had was a turbo back... stock cooler and a remapped ECU...

lol one day on the way home from work at 1am when it was cold as all **** i put it up to 16psi.. lol didnt like that very much :P
